I was there in 1960, Charlie 44, and this film makes it look like summer camp. It was hard but does make a man of you. I think military training is what is missing from so many young men today and why they seem lost in the world.

Disagree. That’s outdated thinking. I spent 20 years in the CG and its a vastly different service. Not better or worse, just different (well, better in that women and minorities are actually being treated equally, by and large). As for military training “making men” out of boys… That’s not why so many are lost.

Quebec 107 - went in the night the blackthorn went down. I am not sure I follow. Are you referring to attempting to square your corners and enter the CCs office and getting a Coffey mug shattered against the bulkhead inches from your face? Or a lecturn tossed wildly down the aisle during the CC meet and greet? As for swimming the length of the pool that is a joke. We had most people reverted for failing the long distance swim. Turns out a little bit of body fat helps flotation. Muscular bony types sink like a rock and fail out more often. Personally, I liked the tough standards. Sharp squared away mates make for survival in heavy weather.@@omcorc

I couldn't agree more. Discipline and focus is what is missing from youth nowadays.

Somehow I don't think this is an accurate portrayal of boot camp in 1956.

E29 1956, Cape May. Never saw a rec hall or beach/swimming. Seamanship classes, lotsa PE, gunnery range, fire fighting, swimming, life saving, guard duty, judo etc. And a single 10 pass in 13 weeks. Not much sleep, but I loved it. Semper Paratus.

    Semper Paratus is a laugh,
We joined to beat the draft.
The only water that we've seen,
Is when we take a bath.
We're the marauders of the night,
    We'd rather screw than fight.
    We guard our shores
    To protect our whores,
Aye Coast Guard we are for you!

Oscar-Alpha 110, Alameda, California, September-November 1976. My experience in boot camp was as different as this 1956 film, as it is from the current films made in the 2010s.

This is actually an embarrassment to the CG I was in for 64-68. The Guard should remove this. Go to 10:55, Ludicrous the way they are marching. Nobody in step. Arms flopping around so far out of cadence.

It was 1956!! I was in E-28, arrived in March 1956 for 16 weeks not 12weeks. Graduated and immediately went to Radioman School in rotten Groten, CT. This is a propoganda clip, but basic elements are true. Being 17 years old and having never ridden on a train or plane before, I enjoyed the trip for 28 years.
