Biggest tip I can give is to not force load the rod. Force loading the rod causes accuracy to suffer and the spool speed will be too fast to consistently control.
Isolate the variables!!! Do not try to change many things at once. Adjust the brake dial before changing the casting stroke. Before changing casting stroke, bring reel back to comfortable brake setting...so on and so on.
Flip casting can be challenging. Be sure to start slow and make sure the lure you are using easily loads the rod with minimal effort.

What future BFS videos do you want to see?
Idk you've covered about everything, I'm ready to see you catch some fish 🐟 but maybe you could do a video on lure presentation and different techniques to use with different lures. Although I know you've touched on that a little in previous videos.
There will be another lure type video coming soon. I am ready to catch fish too. This winter has been a long cold winter. Still about 2 feet of ice on the lakes and the rivers are getting flooded from snow melting.
@@HobieWanKenobi yea I hear you there. We are just starting to melt here in thr Black Hills. The not so fun to catch Walleye are about to spawn in one lake and pike are waking up...I can hardly wait.
Walleye season is May 15 for me. MI/WI border waters is sooner but, that is a mess to fish. Boats every 10ft.

How about a budget challenge with lures, heading to a takcle shop for lures for bfs and catch on each? Something normal, something unusual etc.?

I am glad to see you are not trying to blast a lure way across a lake on BFS as some try to do. That is not what they are for. The rod is a very important factor, the typical 6ft 7ft L or even UL baitcaster is too stiff, it's the action not the casting weight. The (discontinued) Ares came in a couple of different actions, the S-Soft is more like a glass rod.
People regardless of niche or genre will attempt to hype up whatever they are doing to get views. I'm here for the people, not the money

If I want to sock a light thing that's very light across the other side of a lake, I can do that with a fly rod and a hare's ear nymph. With BFS I'm like why would you want to do that?
I've found it is the rod that does the delicate cast not the reel. The spool deliberately has low inertia, so if it is given some big thump like a beachcaster, instant bird's nest.
The waters here, Kennet & Avon, are not wide but deep enough to dissuade anyone from wading, they really do not need long casts.
It's all about using the right tool for the job

Not a bad idea. that can cause some spool balance issues but, for beginners it is a good idea.

Liked. With the Ares, I bet if you tape a bit of lead tape distributed over the length of the rod, it will feel lime fiberglass by recovering more slowly.so you can reward with heavier guides etc.
That would be difficult and make the rod performance drop. The Ares isn't bad for flip casting. Carbon rods are not as easy as glass
Tips to get your cast, get a good reel. Cast with smooth swing, don't try to bomb it and it's less about the speed and more about the flow. Use lures heavy enough for your reel and use the thinnest lines you need. And if you're getting your first casting rod get one that's m or ML power
Smooth casting is the best consistent way to get good casts
Thanks for the tips man. I have a shimano cardiff ax 6'UL fast action and it flips really well. It has a "soft tube tip" and that rod is really limber and flexible. You should check it out kind of like a glass rod with the sensitivity of carbon fiber. It's actually a little too flexible for big trout in fast streams for that I use my daiwa 22 wise stream 53L. It's stiff and strong but doesn't flip as well.
There are carbon rods that flip quite well. In a general sense, glass is easier to flip without getting into specific models of carbon rods.
I'm not new to baitcasting, but am new to bfs. I was using about a 30 year old Shimano Calcutta 50, I just got the new 23Conquest bfs. My biggest issue is I often fish off a pier with about a 3ft high wooden railing in front of me. It adds a whole new challenge to the bfs thing. I got pretty good with pitching the regular Calcutta 50, with a 3/16-1/4 worm weight and Texas rigged worm. I was hoping to downsize to the new Conquest and about a 1/16-1/8 oz weight and smaller Yum hellgrammite. This has been a challenge because I'm pretty much forced to pitch because of the railing in my way. I'm going to keep practicing just got my new reel 2 days ago, and went fishing at the pier with it one time so far, but any tips or a video on pitching or casting with a 3' railing in front of you lol would be great...FishOn...jimi edited because forgot to mention the rod I've been using is an old Castaway 5'6" 3/16-1/2oz I'm not sure what actual bfs rod to get either.
Ok edit again: because I went fishing again yesterday (at pier) and it got alot easier even though it was quite windy! I think it's just going to be a matter of practice and getting used to the reel. Forgot to mention I have been using Sufix Advance H-PE Hyper CoPolymer advanced monofilament 6lb. I'm still casting the little hellgrammite with a 1/16oz worm weight and a #1 and #2 ewg (not 1/0) Gamakatsu hook. I have been a huge mono fan with using stiffer rods in the past (most of my non bfs rods are 30+ year old G-Loomis imx) Anyhow going to watch all your other bfs casting tips videos, thanks 4 making them....FishOn...jimi
Do you prefer the Silver Creek or the new Aldebaran 22 BFS? I don’t go as lite of rods as you but a lot of 1/16. I will also do larger largemouth baits. I have older Aldebarans and they cast anything.
Stream fishing, the Silver Creek is pretty dang nice. I prefer the Aldebaran BFS for all around fishing more.

Less than 5ft in most cases. 4'6" is a good length. Biggest thing is that the lure will load the rod.

very well said about the narrow window when u have to release. I reached same conclusion even for spinning rods. Sometimes overloading them with weight slows them down and makes casting so much easier. Tell me example of stock rod with slow recovery? Has to be UL power or even SUL if u know any
It is really just any moderate action fiberglass rod. The weight needed to load the rod will be relative to the rod power.
I know that shimano makes some SUL rods in there cardiff line up. They say they're fast/moderate but they're definitely slower than rated.
I would recommend a slow action. This makes casting a lot easier, as Hobie said. Might be „tricky“ fighting a big fish, but regarding casting it‘s way easier!

I like short XUL carbon rods for brook trout. Versatile enough to use jigs and minnows. Bends enough to keep the fish pinned too.
One question about the silver creek. Could I primarily bass fish with this. Weights of 1/16 to max 5/16 total weight. Mainly ned rigs and small swim baits, fishing docks, rip rap, points etc with 6lb Tatsu FC. Really want that drag clicker lol
I have used mono with the Silver Creek. It does cast panfish jigs pretty dang nice. The Curado BFS is nice for less money. Also, check out the 22 Aldebaran BFS.

The clou is the lower brake. I prefer a little bit more tension, than more brake. Perfekt Hobie

Your hardware allows flip and my current hardware is much too stiff to do that (blank xray)
I respond to almost every comment. The hardware needs to bend easily to allow for flip casting. The X-ray blank would be difficult to flip cast with.

There are a ew but, many are expensive. I have heard good things about the Major Craft Finetail Glass rods.

Silver Creek is better for me. Spool casts better, is more versatile, faster speed, better ergonomics...better in everyway to me.

I mostly fish mono with trout streams but, fast current makes braid more effective for me.
