I love how he looks straight into the camera and says "ladies and gentlemen of the jury", with the next shot tying it to the jury. It doesn't feel like he's breaking the fourth wall, but at the same time it connects the audience to the jury, placing the viewer in the jury. He also says "forget everything you've seen in the movies" which further cements suspension of disbelief
Both is good but I’ve seen way better!! With all due respect, I love Denzel, but this is not the best! You should watch the opening statement from Al Pacino in Justice For All! Best monologue ever! And his acting is art! Real and raw acting and emotions.
I think its a brilliant opening speech, I love how he starts with facts and then add emotion to it and then end it with law. I just click this video, I didn't see the whole movie, so I don't know the whole facts or story, but due to this opening statement, I grasped the case theory, and I think it made me understand what's the case is all about.
Philadelphia was such a great movie with an absolutely stellar all star cast. Denzel is a total rock star with that opening. After that opening, the defendants should have settled
it's the director! I mean, yes, Denzel is a true legend, and he mastered this character, but its not like he just accidentally "looked" at the camera. this is also a directing masterpiece.
Denzel....... opening statement.......... silence for 5 minutes ......... then : speaker of the jury.... we reached an unanimous verdict..... guilty as charged..... 🤣 Denzel as well as Tom Hanks are truly one of the best actors today !
Hey, in the jury I recognize Mr. Kruger that guy from the Seinfeld show --George's Boss. Looks pretty serious here. Think he died (unfortunately) at the age of 64. Really liked Mr. Kruger.
Daniel von Bargen did indeed die at 64. He had a long career in TV and films. In addition to Kruger on Seinfeld he had a couple of other notable appearances playing one of the SWAT team guys in "The Silence Of The Lambs" and Jacob Steven Haley in The X-Files episode "The Pine Bluff Variant" On February 20, 2012, von Bargen shot himself in the temple during an apparent suicide attempt. After von Bargen placed a phone call to a 911 operator, emergency crews were dispatched to his Montgomery, Ohio, apartment. Von Bargen suffered from diabetes and, at the time of his attempted suicide, had been living with one leg amputated. He was due to have several toes amputated on his remaining foot and reportedly did not want to submit to another surgery. He died of an undisclosed, long illness presumably related to his diabetes.

Muy buena película de Tom Hanks me gusto mucho su actuación y también del otro actor el que le hace de su abogado Es mas es una de las películas que me gustan, asi también como la de naufrago y entre otras
He would have been successful in any endeavor. Luckily for all of us, we were blessed that he chose acting. I don't think he's ever given a bad performance. EVER!
I had no idea back in the day Philadelphia had such a strong LGBT History. Many of the "Kids" who danced on American Bandstand in the 1950's were Gay and some were disowned by their Families. Dorothy Draper an Interior Decorator did work on a Hotel where Men would "Meet" and Ladies would rent rooms. Also in the 1950's A Couple got Married and African American Men had their own "Private Parties".
The second half of the statement is all argument. This is not allowed in opening statements. The defense should have objected as soon as he said "they panicked".
@@Warrior1Spartan This, And Justice for All, A few good men, Amistad etc, are all equally generic Hollywood type of courtdramas. There is no best, its like comparing fast food.
Can we get this lawyer to represent people who were fired from their Jobs because they refused to take the COVID Jab or even people who suffered serious injuries including death after taking the Vaccine? Actually Congress past laws where Big Pharma can't be sued if someone dies or injured by the Vaccine. But that is a different story. It is possible though that an employer or a School could be liable for damages to People injured by the COVID "Vaccines."
He utterly grips you with this statement. His voice, changes in tone and cadence. Fantastic actor.
One of the great actors to ever grace the screen.
I mean, he probably didn't write it. Props to the writers.
More proof that Denzel is one of our greatest living actors.
*cough* “One of?”
Agreed
Agreed... IMO L, shared first place with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro
The best American film actor ever. Ever.
he really is talented.

the same guy in the 'The Great Debaters'movies
You’re cringe
Besides the statement itself, it might be the best acting ever.

See the movie. You'll be glad you did.
Love this movie. Brilliant acting!
My God, the number of acting legends in this movie! 😲
Love how Denzel looks directly into the camera. It's almost NOT the fourth wall.

I’m so glad this would be an open and shut case today. It wouldn’t even get near a courtroom.
Denzel is the Rodgers/Mahomes/Jordan, of acting!
What a great actor

I’m still pissed that he did win the Oscar for this role.
Only Denzel know how.
Movie name ?
God bless Denzile. Otherwise, where are we ?
Nope. Best opening statement is from My Cousin Vinny. “Everything that guy just said is bull--. Thank you”.
I concur with this assessment of the situation.
I swear that was suppose to be foodfight!
Dingo and the Baby.
The defence should have thrown in the towel at this point LOL
Excellent movie and cast, but Denzel stole the show.
