Slavery still exists unofficially, probably on all continents. People of virtually all races have practiced it since earliest antiquity. If people think that trafficking of girls and women for sexual purposes is not slavery, or that prostitution is not formalized rape, they ought to take the matter much more seriously. I remember reading in an essay by Kwame Nkrumah that the West African slave trade was facilitated by African as well as European participants. Implied is the fact that intermediaries were often necessary to transport victims from te interior to the coast. It is often overlooked that an equally malignant trade existed on the eastern side of the continent, run by Arabs primarily. Zanzibar acquired notoriety as its hub during the 19th century. Have no fear, the question of slavery is still very much in the public eye in North America, as it should be. Do not forget that in many European and Asian societies, a feudal variant of slavery existed, which we call SERFDOM. A great many aspects of peasant life were controlled by the local landlord. There was a vile tradition in medieval Europe, called 'droit du seigneur' in French, according to which the landlord could sleep with a newly married peasant's wife on their wedding night. It was a grotesque form of humiliation for both the man and his wife, no doubt. Serfdom was abolished in Russia in 1861, one year before Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in the US. Britain had abolished slavery in its imperial domains during the 1830s, after decades of agitation by Christian Abolitionists. Austria-Hungary had abolished serfdom in 1848. If I recall correctly, Brazil abolished slavery in 1888. This comparison of dates tells us that LEGAL abolition (which is a few steps behind practical abolition) was not taken very seriously in ANY culture before 1800, with one exception of which I am aware. In ancient ISRAEL, according to the Law of Moses, no Israelite could be forced to serve beyond the seventh year. This did not amount to abolition, but it was a very serious restriction. A few years ago I heard of cases in Saudi Arabia where African ladies hired as domestic servants went unpaid for long periods. This is contemporary slavery. North Korean workers have been made to work on contract in Russia and China without getting paid, because the North Korean government takes all the wages to build up reserves of foreign currency. This too is contemporary slavery. The official ruling party of North Korea is called the Workers' Party. What a sick joke, like using the word 'democratic' in the country's official title, DPRK. Only one man's will counts there, which is the antithesis of 'democracy'. As you can see, slavery has affected Africans and people of African descent horribly, but they are by no means the only victims. P.S. Mr. Putin laments the passing of the USSR as the 'greatest geopolitical tragedy' of the 20th century. The USSR was noted for its immense GUKAGS, or SLAVE LABOR camps, in which political prisoners and other 'undesirables' were held. Perhaps the African leaders should enlarge their knowledge of Russian/Soviet history. What does Mr. Putin really stand for? Liberation? Not so much, and strictly on his own terms.
@@marcusonesimus3400 Thank you for the lengthy reply 👍 really appreciate the time, effort and quality of the response. So history will always be history, which we must learn from, and give kudos to those that abolished it.(the form in which it was in at that time) Your 100% right about modern day slavery. Definitely still exists. Very prevalent in places like Dubai, Singapore (many first hand horror stories of house keepers getting raped and beat up in Singapore (ladies from the Philippines) ) interesting you mentioned North Korea, as it was North Korean slaves that build that huge Mandela statue we have here in South Africa. China is quite an obvious one, when referring to slaves and human rights violations. Human trafficking (never mind child trafficking) also very bad in West Africa for organs and sex trade. CBDC's is a great way of getting people to work the cotton fields without letting them realize they are slaves. I'm just struggling to understand why Cyril is being praised ?... The guy that has revived Billions of Dollars over the years in the form of shares, and that instructed the Culling of mine workers in Marikana when they demanded better pay and working conditions. The guy that is capping social grants for the most vulnerable people in South Africa, after stealing 500 Billion (half a trillion) rand in CV-19 relief funds from the EU (which is actually loans from the IMF and not free money). He even has a couch on his farm stuffed with USD 😂 The hypocrisy is crazy when it comes to Cyril Ramaposa. its mind blowing. Its like the devil preaching to his demonic choir. (literally) The guy even made sure our NGO's do not feed the homeless in the eastern cape while the world went in a coordinated lockdown, and the only businesses that could operate was the mega corps and the telecoms industry.

What he says about nation-States pursuing independent foreign-policy goals sounds great in theory. But the actions of all these leaders, in submitting to Russian leadership and Russian sponsorship of this event, suggest that they are doing the exact opposite. Regional cooperation, such as we see in the EU, African Union, MCMA, etc., makes more sense in my view because it seems based more on practical considerations than ideological conceits or neocolonialist ambitions.
Mr Ramaphosa great speech, but what about your country that you are ignoring, what about your Phala Phala wind full, what about your failed Eskom and most other SEO's. /.
West and China with Russia have been and will always see each other as enemies. ONE AFRICA must be wise enough to stand on its own as independent continent free from the stain of millennia long loggerhead without necessarily dragging the nation into any of these conflict. Again, our disunity and hasty action will be our own undoing. We have issues at hand on our own continent before rolling in the mads of millennia long West and Russia conflict. Remember the old wisdom, "Think Before You Act!" Economic ties and resource share related discussions with both continents is one thing, but talk on military alliance is Foolish endeavor. Do not sell our continent for bread.
Military alliance with non-African nations is necessary depending on context. Ethiopia would have been colonised by Italy if it wasn't for their alliance with Russia and even Britain
😂I think Russia helped many coward African countries who had no say to 4he the west😢 But I pray that let all African leaders make one decision on a begging structure...they should stop it
A CALL TO AFRICA LEADERS: Please, DO NOT sell our continent for food or to revenge the West. The long term cost is too high, and we need to fix issues on our soil first. What a shame that Russia and Ukraine, despite such economic devastation from war, are still better than us, and still export food to Africa. Africa's involvement, especially while hotheaded nations are at loggerheads, does not easy the tension. Focus on issues at hand on Africa soil such as drafting new continental constitution, determination for self-reliance that guarantee freedom from dependence on foreign aid, how to bring to an end those conflicts that are displacing our own poor citizens on our soil, how to put our continent's golden resources to good use and so much more.
