I'm an 11 year Tennessee beekeeper and still enjoy learning new things from time to time. Your videos are always interesting and informative. Your photographer does an excellent job and the audio is perfect. One last thing, I've seen people wear their tee shirts inside out before but you're the first one I've seen wear it upside down! @@kamonreynolds If I find a market for it I'll let you know. I've never harvested pollen. My dad does but he uses all of it. I don't know if he's ever sold any. One of my nuc customers this year had two of those bottoms so I got to check them out a couple of months ago. I liked them and intended to order some but forgot about them until you posted your video. Bonus, they're on sale.

Question: The entrances appear to have two holes on the farthest open setting towards the outside that line up over the pollen trap but under the box. Do you close these when trapping pollen and open them when not trapping?
@@HivesToHome Hey NH Fishman43 I always have left mine wide open. Toward the end of the video I show the entrance on mine. Does yours look different?
@@kamonreynolds Mine looks the same. It is the hole closest to the slides (right and left), above the mouse guard bottom entrances and below the top row of four holes. My guess/assumption is perhaps it is a drone exit with the pollen trap in place. I’m just surprised the bees don’t switch to using it when the trap is in place. Thanks
A few days on and a few days off (as you said) is good. Also keep an eye on the bees stores and I don't mean that they may not be getting enough. At some point when they don't think they are getting enough pollen they kick into pollen overdrive and plug everything out with pollen.
Years ago I ran hundreds of pollen traps and sold the pollen to the health food stores as fast as I could clean it up (with an old Sears seed cleaner with custom screens). The money was good and the health food stores would not stop waving dollars. In the end the bees plugged out with pollen and had nowhere to lay.

Get a little snake cam and you can see your frames on the bottom and scan for Queen cells without even talking your frames out 😃

I have a kenyan horizontal top bar with an open meshed floor. If the bees have access pollen and it drops, sometimes it is caught in the mesh but mostly it falls through and the chooks lunch on it I guess.

A Kamon Reynolds video isn't a Kamon Reynolds video without a random Laurel giggle. I like the fact that this can be screened or solid bottom board. The ability to change the entrance size is nice too. Might just order a few to try out. I wish this video had come a few months ago as we're almost at the end of the pollen flow here in the southeast.

You mentioned the brood chamber getting plugged with pollen. What can be done with frames that are full of pollen?
Put them in the freezer and use them for splits
FWIW, I screwed the bottom board into a slatted rack so I can still check for swarm cells.
Cool, think I’ll give this a go. Just need one for National hives 🐝🐝

I’m feeding Mann Lake pollen sub. I’m seeing little balls of pollen under my hives. It’s falling through the screened bottom board. Are they bringing in too much or what?
The pollen trap bottom board is out if stock but can ship orders in July. I still want to try one.
New bee keeper here. Bought the apimaye hive. Just to recap, remove the pollen trap every few days to allow the bees to keep and use the pollen? Also, I think someone else may have asked this question but when you have the pollen trap in and go to collect it, will it or does it also contain mites and beetles?

That’s a big coincidence. I was looking to see if I could find out which it was too and this was the second comment on the first video that I tried! It looks like there’s a weighted piece on this one which drapes nicely over your shoulders without tying yourself into it. I’m looking for similar for when I’m just adding some feed, having a quick check of supers etc I don’t think that we have a decent supplier here in the UK for these though.
I bought some pollen not sure what im supposed to do with it do i sprinkle some on the frames for them?

I want to get information at acacia pollen ?
Do it every year, What i do with it is rub it into comb in spring for cell builders. Makes for quality Queens with it, A patty and sugar syrup in the hive. Queens i made this year have exploded and the deep brood chamber are full of brood. If afraid to rub into comb for cell builder mix it in the pol patty and that works. The BEEs love it in cell builders and the new Queens OMG
Why would you offer substitute in a Builder when you have the real stuff with all the amino acids, fats,lipids etc... not bashing just curious
@@badassbees3680 Why is 1 they go through it fast. 2 there maybe other reasons you may need that little extra. it is better to have to much then not enough. I will tell you tho it makes for great Queens and cells. This year they cleaned the frame and also used the patty that had some mixed in it. I rather overkill on what they need to do 60 cells then under feed
@@matthewmccormick2417 I've used only patties just to see and they packed cups full of royal jelly with absolutely zero other pollen,so it works... however I personally save huge Pollen frames strictly for my builders and use Zero sub because I want them using the best which in my mind is the natural.. and it may not make a difference in reality but my cells don't fit in cell protectors because their too big and I think only real pollen contributes to that, but it's just personal preference trying to incorporate everything possible for the best outcome.But like I said straight pollen sub has enough protein to produce plenty of jelly I just question if that jelly has the same effect... but I was just curious as your reasoning,in the end well fed Queens make the best Queens and sounds like you're having great results👍
@@badassbees3680 Thank you, Yes cell protectors dont seem to work do they as they are not big enough. Yes i am happy with the Queens produced this year. Next year will be harder as i will be trying to do 4x the cells so will be running more builders. Will be interesting to see how these Queens come out of Winter next year. Note yes in brutal cold area but shed in singles like IAN

depends really. In nashville TN it goes for a dollar an ounce maybe more these days

Is this for an 8 frame hive or 10 frame?
How do you keep the hive beetles out. I have a lot of hive beetles in the one I bought after watching this video. If I leave it in two days it not only has hive beetles but also has beetle larvae crawling in the pollen.

Also, if I take it out on 1 day, it still has hive beetles but no beetle larvae.

Hey 3d, you have to Freeze it or Dehydrate. I freeze it.

There is not but if you have it on 1or 2 day rotations they will be fine during that period

Yes, just like with honey there are times of the year when the bees can produce excess

What happens if a bee collects pollen from poisonous flowers?
My Bees are losing 100% of thier pollen with my Apimaye hive, this is without the pollen trap in place.
Just run across your channel. I just started bee keeping about a1-1/2 months ago. Just for pollinating my garden,and I may add another colony with a lot more bee education. I purchased a 5 frame nuc and about 2 weeks later I transferred them into a 10 frame langstroth hive. About 3 weeks later I add another super to that. My question is how often should I check the hive. And what are some good books and what is your recommendation for learning more about bee keeping
Beekeeping for dummies is a good beginners book. I found it online in pdf form.
Michael Walters ... TH-cam is great for Newbies / over Books, initially, as Videos give examples in action ... Then buy a good Book to study the technique shown.... Will make more sense ! 🤗
Do 14 day inspections minimum, as it takes "16" days to raise a Queen Cell (!) Once a QC is sealed (after 5 days of being fully drawn down,) bees will be prepping to Swarm. Also taking a lot of Brood and Larva out of the Brood Box, and adding it to another Box, above a Queen Excluder, and giving the found Queen, more new Foundation Frames, in that lower Brood Box, will ensure she can lay, keep the bee population going (but not Swarm !) The Nurse Bees get called 'up_ to look after that Brood / Larva'. Once they hatch... Nurse Bees become Foragers, and will fill that ex brood comb with Nectar, to Capped Honey. Win, win situation ! And less stressful for the new Beekeeper. 👍
You want to ideally prevent Swarming, so in late Spring to late Summer, 7 day inspections are a good idea. Get into a schedule, that fits around your free time...
After a while, you will get to know who is bursting, and who is lagging... 😏
A Stitch in Time Saves Nine, kinda applies to Bees as well ! 🤗

Forget about beetle blasters and what to put in them.
To deal with shb (small hive beetles) treat around the bases of hives by saturating the soil with Gordon's permethrin from a farm store.
That actually works by breaking the beetles breeding cycle. They pupate in the ground and die because you poisoned the dirt.

If in a cell builder you can rub into comb and set the frame next to cells you want built or in a pollen patty

Well I don't jump too crazy high for yogurt. The Greek Yogurt from Dannon is nice and thick

Yes! Perhaps since things are closed off at the bottom due to the trap an upper entrance can help the bees out a little. I just prop the lid a little

@@jedd.5407 long term. Mylar, 02 absorbers, dehydration? That type of thing. Freezing I’d say is medium storage and to be done after Dehydration. I’m asking because I’m kinda new and only have 2 hives going.
Don't keep it in the sun, don't dry it.. run for the frizer. Sun is the worse.. drying it is not good. Keep it like it is

Im curious, how does this kind of consumerism eefect the poor bees?
When the bees beard alot and they rob any food or frames left out. Typically don't see much pollen either.
@kamonreynolds umn but it's food for their babies right. I'm kind of worried if we take away their food it impacts them further
@@cameragg9752 Honeybees are known for collecting more than what they need which is why we started keeping them. It is up to the beekeeper to know when the bees can afford to part with excess. It doesn't help the beekeeper or the bees to run the bees low on what they need. Some years our hives are nearly pollen bound and some years there is barely any that we can take. Nature is as cruel as it is generous.

I'm always a little leary about all the plastic that apamay (forgive my spelling) uses. It looks pretty cheap. Is there any warranty on them? Does the sun just destroy them?
Food grade plastic. My oldest ones are a year and a half and beside some slight fading I haven't noticed anything
