  • In this video I set up a copper wire mesh fence around my brassicas to try and fend of the slugs.

    I bought some this week and tested it last night. I noticed the snails hated it!! But tiny slugs just went over it with ease! I didn't make a free standing fence though, I wrapped around my pots.

    I have seen large slugs clambering over a single length of copper tape, I now use two bands of copper tape and this has stemmed my losses. Also, rather than keeping unused plant pots in my shed, I spread them around the garden, upside down. Slugs and snails roost inside the pots and so I can collect them easily. At first, I collected 5-10 per pot, but after a couple of weeks, the numbers started to diminish, so I think I am having an impact.

    I've used copper tape.on my long planter which holds my hostas which slugs love and it really works in preventing them eating the leaves.

    Hi Jason, I was wondering about the copper mesh netting as well. The only thing I thought, if the slugs go down into the earth in the daytime, what's to stop them coming back up inside the mesh cage and carrying on gobbling up your brassicas. Annoying thought. I have used, for the last two years, Strulch. Completely surround all plants with a thick layer of Strulch. So far so good. Also, Richard Jackson on the QVC shopping channel, do an organic slug pellet. Doesn't harm birds or wildlife, the slugs die and disappear into the soil, never to be seen again. The pellets also enrich the soil when they break down. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

      Hi Madeleine. Thanks for the tip. Yes they could bury underneath it. I have a kill on sight policy 😂 however some like the leopard slug eat other slugs. So I leave those be.

    I use similar mesh to deter cabbage white butterfly, and then organic pellets for the slugs. They disappear underground to die.Has worked so far

    My plants are also getting mullered this year so I'm going to try copper tape stuck onto the overhanging lip of those plastic slug collars you can get. Ordered it all from Garden Selections the other day so hopefully they'll arrive soon.

    The predators that eat them need access to them. I have so much vegetation they would never do damage. I have so few slugs. Lots of birds and snakes and mice that probably eat them? Relocate dont kill. Never poison. And if you do get rid of the prey you will not have predators...

      Ive used them at my old place as i was all walled in. But here we have a hedgehog or two and quite alot of wildlife so Im not going to use them. Beer traps are good.

      @@leatonveg The risk is that the yeast provides a strong stimulus to draw them in from beyond where they would normally venture, perhaps taking a leafy snack on the way. I also wonder if a water, sugar and brewers yeast solution would be an equally effective bait, might save on the beer. I have noticed my slug cemetery is also a highly effective draw, every night I find loads consuming the remains of their kin, unless they are just paying their respects to the fallen!
      After a nightly crusade with a pointy stick for 3 weeks solid, my kill count is now starting to decline, suggest the control is starting to work. Can’t say I enjoy wondering around at midnight with a torch and dressing gown, keep expecting a knock on the door from the cops.

    Is it the taste of copper or do they get a shock just by contacting the copper

    • @Natta44
      @Natta44 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I read that a compound in the copper reacts with their body that gives off the slug/snail goo. And gives them a shock, probs more how we get static shocks?
