Fresh off that excellent Dolmenwood campaign ready for some more old school gameplay. Down to earth, dry humor and excellent world building. Good stuff!
Welcome back! Your campaign inspired me to run a Dolmenwood campaign, and I cannot wait to see how this one unfolds. I've never run or played a megadungeon before, so this will be interesting. I also want to thank you for sharing with us the house rules documents you are using, I myself am very fond of Goblin punch's table and the d6 skills system. I'm rooting for this team now, good treasure-hunting!
HAHA I loved the 3d6 down the line character-making!! Was happy to see the results with Mike getting a little perturbed (even though I love Mike and think he is a fun player)....So I had my people roll Dolmenwood characters a couple weeks ago. The rule was 3d6 down the line, if the net modifier was -4 or worse we'd throw that character out and completely re-roll all, and because I had a noob and wanted her to be able to try what she wanted I allowed them to swap two scores around...They agreed to these house rules before we started. We wound up rolling five characters for two players, and threw only one out. I told them that in OSR type games, they don't need extremely high ability scores, which is TRUE! We wound up with some characters that had net positive modifiers, and some net negative modifiers. I just didn't want any that were super below average.... Like David (the most fun player with the craziest good ideas in this group, in my opinion), I enjoy playing thieves occasionally too (among other things), but I sort of agree with Mike that a variety of classes in a party (each playing its own role) is a good thing, and that 18 Intelligence should probably be a Magic User (also fun to play). Usually I wind up having to play fighters because I know how to tank, and a lot of people just don't get that and want to play spell casters. I think of these players, my personality type is somewhere between David and Mike.
So glad to see you guys back, love the introduction to how you guys play and for me that is a big part of the draw - a Bunch of mates who are well used to each other's tricks, having a good time. Shame about Dolmenwood, I was enjoying that, but great to have you all back.

@@3D6DTL No worries, I like the idea of running it with OSE over OSRIC. Interested in seeing how this pans out over the extensive playlist lol. 'Basic D&D'/1e and 2e AD&D is my background as an 80s BECMI kid.
Running a friend through an OSE adventure now in a play-by-email (mechanically, we mutually add/edit a shared Google doc). First time for both of us using OSE (though we've played ADD since the early 80's and PF more recently - i.e. couple of decades). Anyway, just thought to share a couple of the home brew elements as they relate to what you've done here: 1. Stat Gen. Can choose one stat to roll 2d6+5; the others, down the line, 3d6. Two stats can be "flipped" excluding the one designated as the 2d6+5. Bleeding stats to feed another (raw) is reprobated. We both played around with this and came to the conclusion that CON was the favored choice for the 2d6+5 as minimizing the chance of a poor score (cough) was considered better than having a small chance of rolling an 18. 2. Using the 2d6 system for skills (thief, barbarian etc.) along with the "favored skill" choice for customization. This spread allows the DEX (or INT) bonus to apply to certain skills without skewing the range too much. That being said, I'll be very much interested in seeing how the 1d6 scheme (c.f. LotFP) works for you. Looking forward to your playthrough of this.
Haha, no lie. My first AD&D 2nd Edition character I ever made (the only previous one was from Basic D&D), I rolled straight 17s and an 11 Charisma! The crap thing is, I wanted to play a paladin, by my older brother was a jerk (he was the DM) told me I couldn't swap a stat... so I ended up with a Dwarf fighter, as I didn't know about dual-class until later...

I use a d12 for skill checks, allows a more graduated progression, and also adds a drawback to helmets (Which increase your critical armor in my games)
@@phaedruslive I like that! I'm my own OSR BX/OSE based d20 system I went for a little more detailed helm rules as well. Currently I'm running for some completely new players so I'm going super simple mostly RAW OSE.
@@phaedruslive D12 sounds better. I think I might shift to that. For d6, I like using things like 5+ and 6+ instead of 1-in-6. As a person who has played Warhammer before that just makes sense to me
I know this was over a year ago, but I have a question regarding Mike rolling the 1d6 for starting armor. He rolls a 4 which shows on the Armor Chart as Chainmail + Shield, but was told that he received Studded Leather. Did I miss a homebrew rule regarding armor? Apologies in advance. Edit: Timestamp @1:11:20
Ah yes, I see why that is confusing. I’m referencing my own armor chart there (you can’t see it in the vid), which was adapted and expanded for available armor in Arden Vul’s setting. You can find my Armor and Weapons lists if you click the link to my House Rules in the description.
I'm having my group roll 3d6 12 times and keep the highest 4 and the lowest 2 from the rolls. They have to apply them in order though, from the 6 circled (Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Chr). It gives you characters with great Achilles heels but have a higher likelihood of some good stats. I suppose you could keep the highest 5 and the lowest one, if you wanted to be more generous. Most importantly, you can still say "3D6 down the line". I justify this narratively in that the PCs have a higher average than NPCs, being a bit better (not much, a bit). That 3d6 bell curve really wants mediocre though.
Maybe I missed it, but when you all were talking about the Mage, it didn't seem like you talked much about the scroll angle. My understanding is that: (a) the Mage can cast arcane spells from scrolls, (b) the Mage can scribe scrolls from 1st level (vs 9th for M-U etc), and (c) scrolls created are not tied to any spellbook etc by the RAW. How are you planning on scroll-creation working?
In my house rules, M-Us and Illusionists can can create magic items at 1st level, as long as they have the money and the spell knowledge necessary. Scroll creation will probably be the RAW 500 gp per spell level.
I feel better now. When this video came out i very much have the visceral reactions to rolling poor stats that I had when i was 11. Doesn't help that RNG has always been against me.
@@michaelmorrison8679 I can roll good numbers all damn day long, till its actually time to roll up a character. then its all ones and twos. Probably why I always allowed the 4d6 method, once I got stuck DMing Even back in 1983.
Really glad you noticed the same issue with the amount of X-in-6 skill points as it's written in Carrion Crawler. I did my math a bit different, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that realised that the CC write-up is way too stingey.
@@michaelmorrison8679 Math is very important! For example, calculating the total volume of Wall of Stone - will it fill the hallway? Can you add some bits to capture the kobolds? Math is useful and dangerous!
Great to see you guys back at it. Looking forward to seeing this campaign get under way. Thanks for sharing all of your house rules and other bits and pieces. Do you have a copy of your combat rules/sequence? After your Dolmanwood encounter where brother Giulum and the knight of the ridiculous hair took down those two Drune , I changed the combat sequence of my game based on the rules you kind of tried out in that session. My sequence is now... - state your intention - role for initiative - winner movement and ranged - loser movement and ranged - winner melee - loser melee - winner magic - loser magic I sort of got the gist of how you changed things as the campaign went along, but it would be great to see your rules in writing. I would also like a moon on a stick. Many thanks Mat
@@3D6DTL Splendid. Thanks for sharing this...Will very likely give this a whirl when we pick up our game in the next few weeks. Can you enlighten me as to the reason for the morale check? Who is the morale check for and how do the mechanics work for it? Also...still waiting for that moon on a stick 😉
@@okiyakimba Morale is essential for combat in old-school play. Check the OSE SRD online for the rules. Basically means that very few battles are fought until one side is completely dead. Mostly, it's for opponents, but if the PCs have retainers along, dire circumstances may force them to make loyalty (morale) checks.
I do 20 minus 1e listed AC to get OSE ascending AC, and I reference the Monster Attack Matrix in the Referee’s Tome to derive a monster’s attack bonus based on their listed 1e HD. But I only do that for monsters that aren’t already in OSE sources. For those cases, I just use the OSE version straight up. There’s not much more to it than that!
When you were talking about ability score giving xp boost it reminded me of the earlier conversation about low ability scores and a game I saw has an xp boost if a character is at a few low bars of stats. I think it'd be interesting if a character had really low stats but got a percentage based xp boost. Or maybe each stat under 10 could have a percentage xp boost. My first thought is that a 3 ability score is 7.5 below the average which would be 28.5%, flip that would be 71.4%. But it is out of 6 ability scores so that would be about an 11.9% xp boost? If that makes sense so it would be 10.5 minus what the ability score, divide that number by 10.5 then divide that by 6. So 10.5 - 3 = 7.5. 7.5 / 10.5 = 71.4%. 71.4 / 6 = 11.9%. That might make it interesting if a player kept a 3 ability score. Or maybe as an alternative, 6 ability score average would be a total of 63. If the characters starting stats are less than that then they would get the percentage of the difference in an xp boost. For example if the ability scores add up to 50 then 63 - 50 = 13. 13 / 63 = 20.6.
I have been playing an AD&D Half-Elf Cleric/Mage with stats of 8 14 15 7 13 9 for over 18 months. He has the worst stats by far out of the whole group of 9 PCs. But I've gotten him to levels 4/4 through conservative and safe, smart play and some luck. Low stats can be overcome.
Sorry, total disagree on the lack of the XP bonus. It's there exactly to encourage players to choose classes that fit their abilities without forcing them to. And as for it not being "earned"? A +2 damage bonus for 16 Strength is also "not earned" in any way, it's "luck of the die" so I am not sure that's a great argument. Having said that, of course: your game, your rules. And more power to ya! Also thanks for starting another cool adventure, just had to say my piece and now I'll shut up and watch. 😀

Thieves start with 6 points instead of 4? Cool.
It's Happening!! Ahhhhhhh!!!!
Hell yeah, let's go!
Excited to watch this ! Going to be doing an OSE game on about a month.
Really enjoyed the dynamics and the Group. I Will catch up on this.

I pretty much remember people reacting just like Mike. its part of rolling down the line I think. I remember it from both sides. I feel the pain.

You can still binge, it just won't be a very long one...at least for a while yet!
- state your intention
- role for initiative
- winner movement and ranged
- loser movement and ranged
- winner melee
- loser melee
- winner magic
- loser magic
I sort of got the gist of how you changed things as the campaign went along, but it would be great to see your rules in writing.
I would also like a moon on a stick.
Many thanks
Mat
Mine is similar to yours, but I have yet to write it down. I’ll whip something up and stick it in the drive for you.
I've edited my House Rules document to include my Modified Combat Round Sequence.
Yay
Woot!
Necrotic Gnome? A play on (G)avin (N)orman perchance? 😅
YES!!!
Wondering why Matt picked the first character he rolled, since the second one had equal or better ability scores in every single field!
May be weird....but I'm listening to the dice to see where they lead. We rolled stats in order, why not the dudes themselves?

Question about training. Spend 1500 gp and 1d4 weeks after the experience has been acquired?
Correct. That’s straight out of 1e. I may adjust after I see it in play, but for now, that’s what I’m going with.
The content from all of you guys is always great!
Jon, do you have any tips for converting from 1e to OSE on the fly?
I do 20 minus 1e listed AC to get OSE ascending AC, and I reference the Monster Attack Matrix in the Referee’s Tome to derive a monster’s attack bonus based on their listed 1e HD.
But I only do that for monsters that aren’t already in OSE sources. For those cases, I just use the OSE version straight up.
There’s not much more to it than that!
@@3D6DTL nice, thank you very much!
Looking for some OSE druid gameplay. Any recommends of series on this channel or others?
stay with us... we get there eventually.
Man, I would've resisted the urge to name my cleric Bigus Stickus
😂
Could you add the months to your googledrive too?
Done!
What is the rule that you used for minimal HP?
Craaaawl!!!
Hello Gentlemen
Is the mage the closest thing to a sorcerer in OSE?
Not really. Sorcerers in modern D&D are still slot-based. OSE mages use magic like skills, similar to the thief. Its primary inspiration is Gandalf.
