    In this video we discuss the importance of practicing in a medium tempo, due to the fact that it gives a much closer rendering to what things will feel like in a fast tempo (in comparison to slow tempo practice), but still allows you enough time to mentally process the complexities (such as voicing, shaping, etc) that you learned in your slow tempo practice.

    Here is a concept I've been discussing with a few of my students lately who have struggled to bring their pieces to a full tempo CLEANLY and CONFIDENTLY. The key ingredient they were missing was medium tempo practice, and once they applied the concepts from this video, their pieces have sounded more fluid, accurate, and effective. I hope these concepts help you in your studies!

    Something really funny happened about a piece that I learned faster than usual was a Gavotte, I thought the tempo was slow so I aimed for that , and after 3 days I just realized the thing was in cut time, I tried at the proper speed and it felt like playing a completely new piece perfectly.

    I’m soo happy
    I was just heading to the piano to try to put the medium tempo then I was soo exited that he said Bach invention no 8
    I’m waiting for that to come out since it’s been nearly 2-3 weeks I have been trying to learn it

    Good advice! I have noticed that I often need to play a piece at multiple tempos to learn it well. Such a sweet 3 year old! My son is also 3 but so far he only sits down at the piano to try to “improvise.”

    I think this is helpful for me, I make too many mistakes playing full time. I need to practice full time more. I appreciate you paying attention to the sound volume of your voice and piano. I am hearing impaired, and I need to keep the volume high, Your playing is amazing and you set the bar for me, thank you Josh!

    Thanks a lot Josh for the great lessons in the ProPractice Piano Academy!! About the new microphone set up, I've just compared (with headphones) with a video with the previous set up and I would recommend the previous one (microphone on the left, on the piano). With the new one you voice seems too louder vs the piano. With the previous one, it seems to me the right balance voice-piano. Greetings from Spain 😀

    Practising in in a middle Tempo it's the key to master the piece. Maybe ur fingers will tell u, play faster, practice faster but no... Continue to to play in a middle like for 3,4 days. After your fingers will tell once will be they ready to play it faster.

    Looking sleek Josh!😀 Mic placement makes piano ever so slightly less clear but is totally fine.
    Great tips with medium tempo; I also find medium or even 80% tempo REALLY helps in performance to prevent rushing when your nerves and adrenaline kick-in, almost mentally like a well-rehearsed back-up to hold back the tempo, so that while you're mentally playing at 80% and feel more secure, adrenaline makes it pretty much up to tempo.

    Hi Josh- really excited about Bach Invention no. 8 getting it's own ProPractice video! I've been stuck at this piece for almost a month and I cannot seem to play through it without a couple of hiccups, stuttering and wrong notes. I do slow and medium tempo during practice so i'm not sure if it is a tempo issue.. Hope you finish the full tutorial on the piece!

    Can you give me a number example of medium tempo. If the original speed is 100 what would be the medium tempo?

  • @MrStrav81
    @MrStrav81 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sometimes I have trouble getting myself to the faster practice tempos. I spend too much time at the slow tempos, and not enough time medium to fast. Particularly when something is difficult. Or rather, I start the metronome too slow, and I waste time at the slower tempos. I don't think it's that I'm not capable of the medium tempos. My question is - how do you determine an appropriate tempo you should be working at if you're trying to speed up a passage without wasting too much time figuring that out? I probably need to be tracking the tempos I've been practicing at on the metronome like in a notebook.

    Im learning right now The Liszt Paganini Etude Nr. 6.
    But i learn it without any notes and I am only 15 years old and have no Teacher.
    I practice every Day. And I started to play it step by step slowly, and than became faster and faster.
    My mother, who also played the piano once, is always amazed.

    Hey, I started playing "piano" a year ago ( actually played a 61 keyboard with lightweighted keys ) and now I've got myself a digital piano with hammer action keys and I guess because I got so used with playing a light weighted keyboard now I'm struggling playing the piano . Can someone give me some tips or advice that I can use to stop struggling??
    Sorry if my english is not great..

      Try hand independence exercises, you can find them by typing them on youtube, they help strengthening your fingers. You can also try Hanon or Czerny studies... Hope I helped a little bit

      @@heheboi8365 Thanks for your advice! I noticed the last day that by playing the piano more often, my fingers got stronger and I'm starting to get used to the hammer-action keys. Also now that you told me about those exercises, I will improve and get used to the keys much faster! So with all the kindness from my heart, I will thank you again!

    • @heheboi8365
      @heheboi8365 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! What happened with me is that, when I started these exercises I could feel that my fingers have more strength! I also, got motivated to practise more because I could play my fast pieces more comfortably.
