    Great info. Wish we knew to this when we had german shepherds. We are rural and have had to deal with 1 getting caught on barb wire fencing and no idea how the others was broken. This would have been less painful and less expensive

    My dog has her dew claws, and no issues. The very least you could do is wait until the pup is old enough for anesthesia then remove it. How would you like one of your fingers cut off right after birth without anesthesia? I suppose you also approve of circumcision!

    • @LoveMyPups
      @LoveMyPups  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Removing dew claws at 3-5 days is fast safe and almost completely painless
      Removing st 6 months on the other hand is much more involved process with anesthesia and painful recovery

      @@BelindaM44 Pay attention to the video. The pups are crying because they're being held in place, not because they're in pain. The one pup stops crying each time as soon as the claw is removed. She only cries when he's holding her arm in place. If it hurt her, she'd keep crying afterwards. They all stop crying immediately as soon as the pups are put away.
      I get it if you don't have the stomach to do something like this yourself. I don't know if I would either.
      But stop judging other people for doing a safe medical procedure on a dog. If you can't handle seeing that, then you definitely can't handle what it will be like if your adult dog snags a dew claw and rips it off.

    How do you know you're not contaminating your samples? It takes 10-30 seconds for alcohol to properly sterilize. Hemostats have ridges that may hold tissue and blood. You dipped those hemostats for a second. You also touched the alcohol bottle, your sleeve, the tops of the hemostats, the lid of the incubator with your 'sterilized' hands. At least have properly sterilized hemostats ready for each puppy.

      What I don’t understand is why remove the front dew claws? My understanding is it’s the rear dew claws that need removing. My heeler has a long deformed hanging dew claw. And now my lab has a litter of pup and no rear dew claw’s. Strange

    May I ask why the front? I thought it was only the rear dew claws? I thought the front you could leave? Or is this only for the DNA? I understand both ways and no criticism from me, just learning here as my lab had a litter of pups but the pups have no rear dew claws.

    • @imnotmike
      @imnotmike 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Most breeds of dogs do not have dew claws on the back legs. Usually if they have dew claws in the back, they serve a purpose, and you would not remove them. Great Pyrenees, for example, have double dew claws in the back, giving them six toes on each back foot, and they are used to provide extra traction in the snow as this is a dog built for the snow. These claws have bones attached to them, and are much sturdier than other dew claws, and are not removed.
      These front dew claws typically do not have bones attached to them, which makes weak and prone to injury. They're only attached to the foot with flesh, and if they catch on something it is very easy for them to rip off, which can cause a painful injury to the dog.

    This is still hard to visualize. Some pups are bigger than others, is there a size difference what forcepts are needed? Exactly where to place them?
    I can't tell what exactly is being removed, is it just the nail? Or some additional bulk behind the nail?
    I can see that *something* is popping out, but what if the forcepts just crush the knuckle instead of force it to pop out? What if it pops "in" to the other side of the forcepts? Can you accidentally pinch in a way the knuckle doesn't pop like if the forcepts are too thin? I've seen people use something like clippers which are sharp for cutting and don't "pop" like forcepts do, which is better?
    As good as the camera was, it's still hard to make out precisely what is happening. Is this bone? Are there nerves being severed? Is there danger of a shattered bone or splinter remaining inside?
    Normally we would just use the vet but they are skyrocketing in price to the point where a litter would cost $500+ to do this. It's nearly $100 per pup for what appears to be a 20 second procedure, so learning this seems like a good skill.

    Is there a reason beyond aesthetics for removing dew claws? This practice is old and much like ear cropping is increasing frowned upon. When it is appropriate to remove, its considered a veterinary surgery and should be done by a veterinary surgeon. The pups are clearly in distress in this video (even if they "quiet down" after a few minutes).
    Coat color can be determined without clipping off declaws. You know the possible outcomes since you know the genetics of the parents; and thats honestly enough to sell the pups "based on color". No real need to know what colors a newborn pup carries....it needs to mature to an age to determine if its healthy enough to breed anyway. At which point you can test for color with amputating the declaw.
    You have lots of great content but be careful with this one. Maybe add a "don't try this at home" disclaimer...or explore recent research on declaw removal/ear cropping trends.

    Never remove the dew claw! All my dogs except my 15 month old boxer has a dew claw on left paw. Believe it or not the dew claw acts somewhat like a thumb. Do not remove it ever. It helps her to grip toys, bones, and agility, even when running according to some vets. It is a remnant left from wolf trait. Its painful to the newborns, and more so as an adult surgery. Yes it can get caught on things, and even snag on to your sweater. Be careful as it hurts the dog when it catches onto your clothes. Its never happened to us but possible. I see the difference and Sofia uses her dew claw to hang on to toys, bones and would you prefer to lose your thumbs because your parents do not like it very much? How much do we keep altering genetics, cosmetic ear surgeries, tail clipping, odd poodle trims where the dog is cold on some parts, and hot other parts of their bodies wo we have a crazy looking poodle cut for show. Let's just enjoy our pooches and get their vaccines, love, attention, exercise and good food. And crates suck! They hate being in them. Its a lie to justify our guilt that they magically want to be in a den by adulthood. Conditioning any animal, dog to go into their prison cage is possible and sad. Put the poor thing in at least an 8 foot by 4 foot dog kennel "crate" cage with a wire top. God, humans on death row are in bigger cages. I used the nice word crate with one dog for 8 hours a day and his spirit was dead by the time he was 12 months old. The word crate is so nice, and crate trained has become a good thing. Sad, find him or her a better home if a crate is needed for more 2 hours.

      No animal need to be in any crate, cage, or backyard. They should have the freedom to move around like any other animal. People are selfish because they want a pet. Who thought of this crazy idea??? How would you like for someone to keep you as a pet? Let these animals go.

    Tbh, I wish I could get my 8 month old aussie declawed on all nails but it's barbaric at her age and not right to have all nails removed. But I am sick and tired of her jumping on me and my mom and leaving bruises and scratches. I'm covered in them. And yes, her nails are as short as they can physically go, any shorter and I make her bleed. My mom is on blood clot medication so she can bleed easily. I've tried teaching her to calm down and not jump but she gets so excited it's not possible. I guess we'll be keeping her training collar on for life until she learns not to jump up on people. 🤷‍♀️

    What's wrong with you americans??? Declawing cats, devoicing dogs, cutting off ears and tails and toes .... Why get a pet and then change its shape? We've always had dogs and cats and none of them ever had a procedure of any sort done until it was strictly for medical reasons (only one of the dogs had a dew claw injury and only then did the vet take care of the claw, with anaestesia and proper pain and infection care. It was not a big deal). I don't want to inflict any pain on any living beeing if there is no reason for it. I don't pierce childrens ears or cut of any bodyparts on someone who cannot voice agreement or disagreement😮 By the way, the dew claws on the front legs are not useless, my dogs use them as a thumb to get a better hold of things like toys and chewing sticks. To me it seems that americans (among some other countries) are 20 years behind. Europeans used to do the same things but gladly we stopped. There are still some issues that need adressing (pig industrie for example) but we're trying to solve them. It's called progress
