    I like parables, proverbs, and pithy sayings David. Here's a couple I think fit more with men but in today's world...
    "Every bull likes his own pasture" &
    "I want to pick up my end of the log"
    I can't do it all but I want to be doing my part and then some.
    Thanks for sharing. We all need each other and the beekeeping community can be independent but I've met some great people in the 9+ years I've been working bees (and you're one of them)😉👍

    I remember my ag teacher asking to borrow my pocketknife and other things that arent accepted anymore. Im happy grew up when i did. Lol
    I just recently experienced a robbing situation and made a robber screen. Youre right it was sure something to see. It was hard not to take it personal when my bees were under attack. I cldnt help but want to protect them. The screen worked perfect and everything is went back to normal after a day or two.

    David that was really interesting, many thanks for sharing. I had a Nuc that was being robbed and as you say the robbers were going nuts. I had two Nuc boxes side by side but not touching as bait boxes. I put the caught swarm in one of the boxes and all was fine till these robbers found them. In the end I moved the Nuc to another location, but left the other box there. The robbers went after that instead although there was only foundation wax in there and they still went crazy over it. It took the robbers just over 3 days before it got into their thick heads there was nothing to take.
    The Nuc is now a thriving colony in a full size hive. So that was my answer to robbers not knowing what else to do I moved them, it worked thankfully in this instance.
    Thanks again for an excellent and informative video.
    Regards,
    Ian

    I read that its important to leave that wooden entrance reducers slot at the top. That way theres no chance any dead bees can block the opening

    • @beek
      @beek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, my thoughts are it is harder for bees to remove the dead bees IF the slot is not even with the bottom board floor. But I suspect either way, bees can figure out how to clean house.

    As always, good info - thanks. I use division board feeders in spring. I have the 2 gal size which works well because I'm not filling syrup disturbing the hive. Any thoughts on that type of feeder and its impact on robbers... when the cluster moves to the second box during summer dearth I move the feeder up with them. In early spring when cluster is still tight I use an inverted jar system much like your board.

    • @beek

    Thank you, David, I'm new at this and you have helpful tips, especially regarding feeding the bees in the spring and fall with your can feeders invention. In winter if there is snow and freezing temperatures, do you use a different kind of feeders? I'm afraid the jars will freeze and break if I don't insulate them. How do you feed them in wintertime, knowing that it's not a good idea to open the hive when it's too cold. Looking forward to your recommendation.

    On the back side of my entrance board there is a opening as big as the front side of it! I haven't seen one like m8ne on your show! Do I just use the wooden entrance reducer stick on the front side putting the small hole so they can go in and the robber smart bee on the entrance in the back or do you recommend me getting 2 smart bee boards for both back and front entrance? Do know my hive sits in a pasture with many field mice

    • @beek

    David, thank you for another excellent video! Is it a waste or not necessary to feed your bees all year round? I started a new hive this past spring with brand new frames and have been feeding them constantly all year and probably will continue feeding them through the rest of the summer, fall and winter. They have been consuming 2 quarts every 2 days. I have been feeding them your recommended blend of 1 to 1 with pollen powder, honey bee healthy and Amino booster. Is it too much to feed them all year round... 365 days, even after they have built out and working all of the frames?

    • @beek
      @beek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's good to feed bees especially with the additives you mentioned. You shouldn't feed them IF you have supers on and want to collect the honey to sell or consume. And do not feed liquid sugar in the winter, candy boards are best in winter.

  • @joetripp123
    @joetripp123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey David, I'm just starting out and have a question. If I feed with jars in the top of the hive with your feeder board it would seem the sugar water would drip into the hive regardless of if the bees wanted it or not. Wouldn't it be better to use a feeder that they can take the food if they want and not take it if they don't? Thanks, really enjoy your videos.

    • @beek
      @beek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not recommend feeding bees liquid in the winter. But rest assured that the bottles with the lids with tiny holes work by vacuum keeping the liquid from dripping out.

    • @joetripp123
      @joetripp123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beek Ah ok that makes more sense. No, this isn't for now, this is for when my nucs come in the first week of March. Thanks for the reply. I bought a round rapid feeder but some reviews seem to say it can drown bees and I don't want that.

    • @beek

    I’m in Chicago Illinois as an urban beekeeper. I’m a novice and I’m still trying to figure out when will the fall dearth hit Illinois. Also is there any spots left on bee team six.

    • @beek
      @beek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A fall dearth is when your bees are working like crazy, then the next day, it appears they all died based on no traffic at the entrance. That's a dearth, maybe less than 10 foragers per minute. Yes, we still have a few spots open for BeeTeam6 www.honeybeesonline.com/beekeeping-mentor/

    Thank you. I was confused about the reducer. My next question is that it gets pretty hot here especially now through August and the bees cover the front of the hive. They are hanging down under the bottom of the concrete block that I have the hive sitting on all day and all night. Can this be prevented

    I was thinking about the times I've had finding my robbing screen and my staple gun and installing it in the middle of a full-on robbing scenario, I am always concerned about losing the foragers who didn't have the benefit of learning the new entrance location. I wonder if, when the flow is over and I begin to feed, that maybe I should put the screens on before robing begins and simply leave them on till the beginning of winter. What do you think?

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I control robbing by community feeding away from the hives in the fall. Bees would rather eat from an open feeder than have to go into the battle field and take on the enemy for a meal.
