Chris - exactly what I'm considering. Manolin tuned same as violin and not enough separation, but with a viola and a mandolin - this duo proves my point methinks.
It’s Mean Soybean, I played for 8 years, from 9 - 18, and I was decent. Not like her though. It’s taken me two years to get my fingers back to where I’m beginning to be happy with it again. I’ve been playing the guitar for over 30 years in the mean time. Let that sink in.
The moments of 3 part full triad harmony are like special treats! Made more special by not being uniform the whole time. I guess the classical music rules would say this is "wrong." So glad this kind of music knows better than to worry about that!
It's a very characteristic syncopation of old-time music. Straight 4/4 meter, "square" tune (i.e., 32 bars), but very often the first beat of a phrase is played one beat early (the gut-bump). Yeah, I like it much better that way too! :-)
Saw this a while ago, and I've come back to it at least once a week after that first viewing. It's perfect! I know I'm 5 years late, but extremely well done!
How much do you charge for playing at my wedding? This duette is the closest thing that I' ve heard that represent my feelings for my love. And I whant to share that feeling with her, and all our families and friends. Truly beautiful
Not sure how serious you are about having us play your wedding but if you email me with some details about what you had in mind as well as the date and location of the wedding, we can talk further. My contact info is here: lukeabbott.com/contact
This version is also in 4/4. It's the syncopation you're feeling, which definitely gives it a different flavor from the "straighter" performances you'll find elsewhere. Great version!
Hey I'm a violist really interested in learning fiddle music for viola especially this one now that I have heard it. Is there any place I can find any that are available, preferably for free??
Hi. Ive only just discovered this video. Absolutely love it! I cant seem to find sheet music for the viola...any idea where I might be able to find unless you happen to have? Many thanks this video brings me pure joy and inspired me to dust off the viola and get practising
I stand corrected. In my tradition, (classical music), syncopation can displace a beat, but cannot drop it. Whatever it is, though, I certainly do like it. And your joi de vivre comes through on every beat. This is a wonderful video.
I haven't touched my viola in years. It's just been sitting in my closet with a broken string gathering dust. Same for my brother's violin. I've been learning bagpipes for the last few years and forgot how nice a good fiddle could sound. I think I'm going to pick it up again. Thanks.
Tapping your foot to 7/8 is a special experience, too. I looked for other versions of this, and most of them are 4/4, which I now find really boring. This one has that gut-bumping pull at the end of the bar. Nice.
@abbottfamily Thanks, it would be great if this information could be added to the video description. It doesn't say where this was recorded, or even in which country or state. It's one of the best old-time fiddling performances I've ever seen so it seems only right that even a little bit about the performers be added in the video description.
I'm just gonna leave this here so someone likes or comments and reminds me of this gem 😊
Worth remembering
Old time music needs more violas!
Definitely agree with you there!!!
The more I hear this kid, the more I think the same
Cellos too!

Watched this 10000 times. I WILL LEARN IT!
This could go on forever.
This is the kind of music that feeds my soul.
I bought a Violin because of this Video hahaha..... i sound terrible, but practice makes.....less terrible..... :D love this video x
Good for you!
How is it going now?
I asked too many people who started the violin and their comment took more 1 year but they dont answer probably because the left the violin

That's great! Practice makes permanent, and keep it up and you may become a world rebound fiddler. Hows it coming along now?
Beautiful sound! I love the sound the viola and violin put off together.
I will never tire of this rendition of a classic....
i could be playing this video all day long and not get tired of it... so good that it gave me chills

I'm a viola player and I was looking for some challenging songs and I like this one. I'm only in 7th grade so it's a little challenging at that speed
its not a journey without a challenge :)
True
Wonderful - what a beautiful sound.
This is now my favorite rendition of this, ever.
You and Annie should do more videos together.
This is just amazing.
I've watched it more than 20 times, im not kidding.
That end smile is sooooo cute - what a sweet couple (aside from their mastery!)
Luke gives up his somber gaze at 1:35 when Annie kicks it up a bit.
Roger Kobeska who wouldn't fall in love with that playing.
Don' cha love how she makes him smile. Makes me smile too....both her added little punch there and his reaction.
Words can't express how much I love this duet! Old-time viola deserved to be the Next Big Thing.

This is like waking up on a sunny Sunday morning
Two of my favorite players to watch and hear: Luke and Annie so great!
Miss you, Erik!
LOVE the viola range and the harmony! Great arrangement, you two!

What a huge sound! Love it!

FANTASTIC!!! Foot stomping FUN!!!
Such a sweet waltz. I hope it enters the old-time lexicon more and more.
Great sound...:)
Totally fabulous - especially Annie who is nothing short of a fabulous player!!

geniale!!! tks guys for this great music!
They are both really good! Love the instruments on the back wall!

Absolutely gorgeous sounding, I play fiddle and I'd love to be accompanied by a viola!

I haven't touched my viola in years. It's just been sitting in my closet with a broken string gathering dust. Same for my brother's violin. I've been learning bagpipes for the last few years and forgot how nice a good fiddle could sound. I think I'm going to pick it up again. Thanks.
Wonderful. Any chance you have the sheet music for this arrangement?
Lovely playing!!
It sounds like blue grass to me and it sounds great !
I Love harmony between the fiddle and the Viola

Shes..amazing :)
Outstanding performance! Can you tell us a little more about these performers?
WOW - something to aspire too!
What reason would anyone have to dislike this?
Outright Jealousy or ignorance. Some people just can't be reached and there isn't any point trying.
wow you did great this is the best one i seen ♥
