  • How to catch baitfish like piper, mackerel and mullet. here's an easy set up with tips on how to catch fish like piper (or garfish as it is also called in Australia). Live baits are often the best way to catch big fish like kingfish but fish like John dory and large snapper also take live piper, mackerel and mullet.

You can use a tin of cat food (fish flavoured) or bread or buy a commercially made bag of tuna or fish berley....

I just use sabiki rig with small cubes of salted bait, can buy them $1 each of AliExpress

They work fine, sometimes piper are harder to catch on them because the baitfly wings get in the way of their small mouths. In a mackerel school sabikis are quite deadly but if fishing over reef you can lose whole strings of sabikis quite easily.

    Cast net?

Good for collecting bait, not so good for catching live fish as the net often damages their gills. In rocky places sometimes you end up with the net snagged on the rocks. Bit heavy to carry into remote locations...but it has a place in the fisher's tackle box....
