It’s interesting you mention the Motocross racer! I coach racers and arm pump is so common but have found great ways to overcome it, mainly through awareness of how hard they are gripping the handle bars and mentally being tense and tight. Conditioning is one factor to this but also technique, bike setup, hydration and mental approach.
Love your content! Has really been helping me find connection to muscles when training.

And gripping with your legs, not your hands.

Pump is a reminder that you are training well in a bodybuilding fashion.

So the take away from this is to combine heavier training with lower reps ,with higher rep lower weight training?

Probably doing no more than 1-2 "Pump" sets can be beneficial for gaining muscle mass, as long as most of the sets you're focusing on "normal" rep ranges (5-15) with enough intensity (RPE 7-9/1-3 RIR)

What if i have been hypertrophy training for a very long time but i still feel a good pump? Am i still growing muscles or am i wasting my time?

Assuming you aren’t used to strength training it may be time to phase into that for a few weeks, theoretically if your strength were to go up then you’d able to add more of a progressive overload when you go back to hypertrophy training

@@LotsOfSoap Thanks that's really helpful and makes sense.

You can go to the gym and get a pump everytime but you won't grow if the volume lifted is not enough to tear down the muscle fibers. That's why progressive overload is so important for progress as the pump can kick in before enough damage is done to the muscle and give you a false indication of a good workout. I would only recommend beginners to "chase the pump", it's a great way for learning how to connect with the muscle.
The last set of any exercise I do is often a drop set just to get the pump because I'm addicted to the feeling, but that's not even optimal because it messes with your recovery and stimulus-to-fatigue ratio, but damn, it feels good.
So sometimes a pump can be a great indicator that you really pushed it hard enough for a muscle to grow, but that may impede you in the long run if the muscle hasn't recovered enough until your next workout.

Don’t believe every muscle responds that well to the pump but arms and shoulders, if your getting an insane pump, your arms and shoulders are gonna be huge

Is strength training a good idea for a skinny dude just starting?

What is your goal? If it's to build muscle then it's recommended to train in the 8-12 rep range. Get stronger on your lifts in that range, adding weight as you're able. Sets of 5 or 6 are good for adding both size and strength. I would start out with 8-12. Do that for a while (at least 3 or 4 months).

It's where blood rushes to your muscles, you will feel it if you do it correctly ( listen to the first minute of this ).
