      It’s hard, but there are ways to make it fun. I don’t know if it’s in every school, but over here they have study groups for people that prefer to learn information visually and in a more fun way, instead of reading the whole textbook by themselves and absorbing information that way. (Of course the groups recommend you study in the textbook by the time exams come around, but the method is easier to remember information afterwards)

      Mr. & Mrs Smith pretty much. I’ve been kicked out of the room for my doctors to tell my family, not me, what was wrong with me, and that I must be crazy because he couldn’t find any reason for my vision or pain problems.
      He never said a word to me. Asked me questions then kicked me out after 10 minutes of not letting me fully answer.
      Definitely don’t expect quality care, because at the end of the day, they still go home to their warm meals, a nice family, and a high salary, while the ones who give him that are sent home being called crazy

    3. Sitting on the bench armrest, waving limbs on the left at 1:36

    5. Its head at 2:51, on the table
    6. In the tent, behind the lady with pink shirt at 2:53
    7. Seen crawling at 2:57 (noticeable)
    8. Seen running with the students at 3:21

    From an actual zebra (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, gastroparesis, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia, etc) thank you for the line "catch rare diseases but still treat the common. I spent years with an incorrect diagnosis because my doctor ignored any symptom that did not fit her diagnosis until I jumped ship. My new doctor recognized my "stripes" on the first visit. But even as a zebra, sometimes a cold is just a cold. ;)

It also can cause other conditions like gastroparesis (stomach issues) and Postural Orthoststic Tachycardia which causes me to get dizzy when changing positions.

    Fun fact:
    The medical slang term "Zebra" for rare (misdiagnosed) illnesses comes from the old proverb "If you hear hoofbeats, think horse, not zebra!" - meaning that you shouldn't jump to unlikely conclusions just because they are theoretically possible. It's actually a proverb that was taught to us in paramedic school, which is also where I learned the same _solution_ for this problem that is mentioned in this song: "Just examine!" If you properly do your ABCDE and your SAMPLERS and all those tools avaible to you, you'll eventually get a working diagnose one way or the other.

    The one problem with this is for those of us who turn out to be at least a zebra if not a friggin’ unicorn. Despite many doctors in my extended family, getting genuine treatment was put off for decades because my physicians kept waffling and feeling certain it had to be something ordinary given that I wasn’t near death with organ failure. So, learn the lesson that I ended up on the wrong side of: zebras do exist, even if they are indeed the minority. Resistance to this possibility can wreck as many lives as building up exotic diagnoses in your imagination l

    My grandma passed away from a literal zebra disease,
    NET cancer, the zebra cancer ribbon-
    When you hear clopping and neighing, think horse
    But dont complelty out rule a zebra if you can't find the horse or the treatments not helping-
    Most NET cancer patients don't survive more then a few months to a year, because it gets mistaken as a more common cancer
    My grandma was lucky they caught it during an unrelated surgery, she got 3 more years after her diagnosis
    Even if a disease is so much of a zebra that zebra print becomes the literal face of said disease,it still can and does happen to people.

While I appreciate that you did include that it is important to find the zebras it took my doctors 30 years to diagnosed me instead of brushing me off with half cocked diagnosises. “You’re too young for that, only elderly get that” I’ve walked around on a broken pelvis since I was 14 because of ignorance and “think horses, not zebras” this doesn’t even account for the fact they missed a autoinflammatory disease as well.

      Many doctors do but keep in mind that there are SO many conditions that can cause a symptom, a sore throat for example. It could be absolutely nothing, the common cold, a virus, bacteria ect. which are all very simple and common but it could also be cancer. You can't get every patient who comes in with a sore throat have an MRI. Swollen lymph nodes in children are a very common symptom of a current or resent infection but it could also be cancer. You can't get every child with a swollen lymph node have a biopsy. I hope you understand what I mean.

    • @maryly2688
      @maryly2688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lia TM I understand what you mean, but frequent dislocations and the unique symptoms of this condition should make it so it’s not that hard to get a diagnosis. The average time it takes us to get diagnosed is 20 years from symptom onset. A lot of doctors don’t think it’s possible to have a patient with this condition or they don’t know it exists.

    • @maryly2688
      @maryly2688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lia TM what your referencing might take a patient a few months to a year to find out. That’s perfectly reasonable in my opinion. I just wish that more doctors understood not to dismiss chronic pain as anxiety. I hope you get what I’m saying, I don’t want to come off as rude.

    Mine was the opposite, everyone thought what I had was common. They thought lupus but I tested negative. I always had the weirdest things happen such as going blind, syncope, GI problems, joint problems (arthritis and multiple dislocations), I broke out in hives all the time, pectus, tachycardia, arrhythmias, and much more. I felt like a hypochondriac.
    I moved for college and I saw my new primary care doctor. I had strep, nothing big. She went over my medical notes and said “I’m sending you to genetics.”
    Closest geneticist to me was at Mayo. They tested me and I had gene mutations that had never been seen before. Starting sometime in 2020, Mayo is giving me free medical care as long as they get to study me.🤓

    Yeah but personally when I had gotten to a hospital I had some symptoms that wouldn't stop and my really experienced doctors team did me the basic examines and found NOTHING but I knew something was wrong and they did too but they just couldn't find out so there was this one I think last examination and it was a teaching hospital so a bunch of excited students were there too cause they had never seen it cause it's a rare examination for when doctors really don't find something so the doctors said to the students that they couldn't find anything and those students FOUND it cause of their minds thinking I had a zebra so yeah sometimes they're right and that's cause experienced doctors will mostly look for common diseases and not really rare ones !
    Edit : Also I said to my doctors that they could let the students move me around and be with me so they were so excited and it was actually really fun having them around and them being excited like 5 year olds giving them candies lol they were just so fun so yeah also they had more gently hands than the experienced doctors cause experienced doctors kind of lose this excitement and being gently so they get good grades but those experienced doctors just need a case that'll make them young again and spice up their doctor live again like when they were med students ! 😊
