Oh, my - the physical and emotional intensity here are both sky high! HJ's extreme and luminous musicality manages to reveal fully modulated Brahmsian emotions, elevating this art into an uninhibited, free-flowing, spiritual dialogue. The compositional originality and profundity of perspective that define Brahms' late works, emanate from a complete and highly disciplined mastery of structure, instrumental capabilities, orchestration, motive, theme, and drama. His masterworks are carved in bold, clear, broad, deep, and unexpected statements and structures. They tower, this concerto included, over the Late 19th Century, and beyond. The sum of all of these elements are why Brahms is rightly considered to be Beethoven's truest successor. What amazed me here is the electrical current running between composer and pianist. How can this "heavy" music flow so powerfully, and, _somehow_, with such great ease? I do not know the answer. I do not understand it. I cannot quite fathom how that works. The result, however, is deep, deeply moving, and with a beautiful, steady, and joyful undercurrent. Johannes has not had such a lithe and energetic dance partner in _ages_ - maybe ever... Once upon a time, yes, in the galaxy Milky Way it was, while orbiting a bright and warm Yellow Dwarf star, on an ever-so-delicately-balanced elliptical planet, I did know humble awe and unearthly wonder.
HJ's Brahms II is an energetic riot within music that can actually handle it. I find myself powerfully drawn into the communicative action between this vastly knowledgeable, able, and relaxed interpretive artist and the masters she engages - Brahms included. And while conventional beauty of musical tone and articulation are wonderful in their own right, they are not nearly as compelling as the all-embracing work of an artist as radically bold and original as the masters themselves. This performance, with *_who knows what orchestra_*, is fantastic, top to bottom. Some people claim that Brahms puts them to sleep. This will keep them on the edge of their seats. Bravo!

I just have to say it... I Love HJ Lim!!! Watching and listening to her is an absolute joy. She is a technical phenom and the author of an amazingly emotional journey. She is so into playing that you can't help but be taken in... and when she smiles, it is priceless. I can't get enough. I am a fan, what else can I say.... I appreciate her approach and the stories she tells.

Just incredible. Passion, delicacy, great technique, love of the music, no ego, just art. She is a truly wonderful pianist. Her Beethoven set is great, and she is obviously still getting better. She should be playing with Berlin and Chicago, and making lots of cd's.
I'd put this performance up with Richter and Fleisher, and you can't get higher praise than that. How I'd love for her to come to Boston; and to do some Bach...
Thank you for this wonderful video.

+Roger Gottlieb you said so well...passion and delicacy together...plus love...can,t go higher than that, she stands almost by horowitz...by callas...and at great composers level...she is one of the greatest musicians already...so young...so innocent...so pure

It's a great rendition of this wonderful BIG concerto, with nary a 'slip' (not heard - so far in this 1st. mv.). This pianist has always impressed me not only with her impeccable pianism but her seeming 'understanding' of the 'jist' of the composer's wishes. [I follow with score. Once in a while she slightly 'strays' from the basic tempo in solo passages. But who of the "greats" did not?]

Exceptional - possibly unique - conception of the work. Wonderful and beautiful.
Like if it were a totally new concerto! And exceptionally beautiful and well thought.
Only HJ Lim to be able to do it like this - because this way it’s even more difficult.
This has become my favorite version of the concerto all of a sudden!
    Exciting!

I'm increasingly amazed by Korean musical talent. This concerto takes on a whole new 'shape' .... 3rd Movement, for example.... the octaves occur so quickly on each other, it's almost an echo of Liszt (which it should be, right? Contemporaneous) -- I've not heard Liszt before in Brahms; interesting, very interesting and exciting rendition!

+Juergen Voigt Hallo Jürgen ! Weiss du warum .... do you know why your answer was so right ? Because after the heroes of the middle of the twentieth century (Gieseking , Fischer) , all western pianists ( and particurlarly the german ones ! ) thought that Brahms was their "private garden" .... and played this heavenly music in an utterly boring and stupid way .
For Mrs. Lim , not the same story . This is not her "own privacy" , this is foreign , weird , strange and forbidden . But she plays it , with all her soul and passion ; She is in love with it . And you know , Johannes needs love .... desperately .....

+Juergen Voigt Oh , I forgot saying it , I am also an "old german musician" . But pissed off by what the "german musicians" (and others!) made out of the german music ....

+Juergen Voigt brahms is the most loving musician in history for me, fourth symphony is perfection, he is an invisible saint, nobody knew after many years that he left a lot of money to help poor neighbors, no doubt he is one of the few greatest geniuses of all time, and much forgotten, this young brave korean girl is giving back to brahms what she just received from him, love, infinite love.

A good example where your virtuosity is well used - as most pianists treat this concerto as holy and lose sight of its energy and vitality. Choosing the times for the incredible octaves or fleet fingers is essential, and you chose well here. Of course, you also give it much more. Perhaps the last time a pianist dared to perform this work with such excitement was early Richter, Gilels, or Horowitz. The fact that you are the only one to try it in this legendary style speaks volumes of the value of your approach here.

The last time somebody did this concerto whith this tempi (which make it 5 times more difficult! but was what Brahms actually wanted) was Arthur Rubinstein in a RCA Recording whith Albert Coats. And that's about 90 years ago. And was full of mistakes, that much that Rubinstein himself did not want to bring the Disc for sale.
Most other famous pianists did not even try this.
HJ Lim takes full risk and gives full power! That Needs guts!!! And she did make it on a very high Level! Brava!!!!

42:24 Mrs. Lim , I am really asking myself if you really realize the way you are playing this .....
Are you really aware of it ?
Like a young and beautiful Goddess , you are giving LIFE on your passage .... this is mesmerizing .... some others , like Schnabel , are able to transport the music outside of our earthly territory , but you , you make real something forbidden , you give us the physical pleasure of your gift . This is unique for me in history of musical recording .

+Fritz Maisenbacher (GA4N) yes this is unique and mesmerizing...only callas or late horowitz were like that...i don´t think she is really conscious...too young to realize what she is doing...that is why she sounds so fresh, innocent, spontaneous, so musical...cause she is free... free of everything...like a kid...playing...making music the loveliest game...loving life through her love of music...and letting us love music and her, cause she really is loving

35:20 after an abyssal second movement , Lim is here playing for eternity .
Excuse me please for this grandiloquent words , but I mean it , really ....
After years of disgusting soup , making this fantastic music so boring that nobody couldn't hear it without thinking "oh no , the second of Brahms again , I'll fall asleep" here comes Mrs. Lim , with the same appetite than Barere , the same devastating arrogance of the young Horowitz , and the same subtility than a Friedman , a Moïseiwitsch or a Lhevinne , and last but not least , the explosive metaphysical tenderness of an Artur Schnabel .
Not less . You think I am mad . Ok . But listen to what she is doing at 42:24 to the end ....
This is so damned free , fresh and sexy , this is able to wash and rinse 50 years of Brahms captivity .
Sounds for eternity . At least in my ears and my brain .

15:52 This apparently rather "academic" ending by our Johannes here no more academic at all ..... we learn that only the other pianists were themselves "academic" ... .
    What a surprise !
I was already knowing that Brahms is the most badly played composer of all times , the private garden of lazy and pretentious pseudo-musicians able to make this fantastic music boring , real criminals ......

En efecto es el 3er movimiento del Concerto la más gustada. En realidad es el Concerto más bello que yo haya escuchado jamás!

Amazing facility but all the the small pseudoemotional rubati cannot hide the fact that the percussive monocrome sound and lack of breathing space create the impression of second hand lIszt combined with third rate prokofjev .
