It makes sense that the cutting bevel would be the primary. I will stick to the less sensible terminology though as it is the one I have always used and I think the one that most people understand. Happy New year Erik.
@@KuukkeliBushcraft I will continue to understand your meaning and reasoning. I had thought that there must be an objectively correct definition but what I figured out yesterday is that there is no global consensus on the matter nor does one seem likely any time soon. So I endorse the one that stuck first and in that sense we are the same :D ¡Feliz Año Nuevo, Tim! 🍾
@@sonofcolossus7766 my friend I am very glad to hear this! Had you been of the contrary opinion that might have been hard on me because of my working model that I am mostly right about whatever you agree with :D I have a supplementary insight on the matter: (1) The bevel that the knife maker spends most time, effort and belts on, he might see as primary. (2) The bevel that a knife collector sees his reflection in, he might see as the primary bevel. (3) You and I allow that the primary function of a knife is not for grinding on or for looking at, but for cutting with. Hence we see the primary bevel as the one that fulfils the primary function of the tool. 💥
Maybe it's called the primary bevel because its the first bevel ground after the flat... The main bevel responsible for the overall cutting performance. Its what determines your BTE thickness. I dont know, thats weird! I think the primary bevel SHOULD be the edge. Though... The primary bevel on a chisel is also the edge (unless a microbevel.) My contribution to the endless pursuit of truth. Why can't there just be 1 correct answer!? ✌️
@@jimbusmaximus4624 I daresay it looks like an intractable problem to me. We might expect that within a few centuries' time the Planetary Confederation of Blade Terminology will issue a Universal Edict that the Primary Bevel is Always the Cutting Bevel, Including in the Instance of Microbevel and with No Exceptions. However there will still remain pockets of determined resistance - resourceful, artful and impossible to totally stamp out - whose power will eventually wax and ultimately come to challenge and tear down the primacy of the ruling order. Over time they will neglect the fire that they tended in the wilderness and so, once more, our kind shall regress into chaos and factionism. Then start over again. It's the Ouroboros of Bevel Enumeration!
