    I actually like the hairspray because it keeps the blacks clean and the blooms the highlights and adds softness to the skin. I don't enjoy the milky blacks from the cinebloom.

    • @AndrikLangfield
      @AndrikLangfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Awesome! Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with how it handled the shadows. I agree whenever I use the cinebloom I usually end up tweaking the blacks to bring them down to where I like them :)

    Hairspray for the win!

  • @CWM31P
    @CWM31P ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Really nice comparison! You can probably achieve a more similar cinebloom if you waited longer after spraying into the air before swiping/catching the particles. Bigger particles fall out first, before the smaller particles. So, by giving enough time and doing more swipe attempts you should potentially get even finer particles deposited onto the filter.

    Naturally, one big advantage with the good old hairspray trick is that you have full control and can use different strength depending on situation. Most filters (incl pro mist) are quite strong when it comes to halation. Even the weakest ones.

    • @AndrikLangfield
      @AndrikLangfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree, it was nice being able to keep trying until I got the exact intensity I was hoping for :)

    thanks for doing this comparison... you have just saved me 60-70 dollars (unless I can justify the longterm use of a CineBloom)... surprised at how the hairspray did provide some kind of softness without becoming muddy in the shadows as with the CB... I was also surprised at how strong the CB filter was only at 10% (some samples look like they were closer to 20)... will have to try the hairspray method myself!

    I was really surprised by how good the hair spray looked! I'd say the two were faily evenly matched. I prefered the CineBloom on the building but the spray on the lamp post.. Might be worth screwing two cheap UV filters together and having the hair spray on the inside. That way, it wouldn't be able to smudge off even when changing lenses.

    Hairspray is legit lol. How long would you say the “bloom” effect stay on with the hairspray?

    • @AndrikLangfield
      @AndrikLangfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I found the hairspray stayed on perfectly fine as long as it didn't come into contact with water. I ended up spraying it in the inside of the filter so it wouldn't get smudged off and so I could still clean the outside of the filter without removing the effect. So pretty decent for what it is and itll come off easily with some tap water if you mess up or don't like the results 🙌🏼🙌🏼

    • @AndrikLangfield

      I'm using an a7iii but on a smaller budget, I'd recommend looking into something used. A lot of the older Sony APSC sensor cameras such as the a6300 you can find under 1000 which shoots great pictures and really decent 4k for the price.

    try black spraypaint instead (the kind you can wash of in the first minutes of application) and spray it on the inside of the filter so you can clean the front) gets much closer to original BPM....IMHO mine looks even better than BPM but that of course is personal preference......you'll need to do it a few times but you can get the particles to be as small as on the BMP filters! I've compared them side by side and immediately sold my (expensive AF)4x4 BPM......... p.s. also try to use a good multicoated UV-Filter ..not the cheap ones.......that way you'll get no nasty reflections against bight sources (the BPMs produce those nasty reflections sometimes and it absolutely ruins the shot IMO)

    Cinebloom looks too strong, completely destroying the contrast. Hairspray I can't say much without watching the original full resolution footage. But hairspray looks much better in terms of blooming and halation. Does the hairspray add weird grain to footage? Or shows uneven texture on plain flat surfaces?

    • @AndrikLangfield
      @AndrikLangfield  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, good question, yes you can see it but it's only obvious when I move or rotate the filter so if you have a lens that focuses by rotating the front element like some older vintage lenses then you'd definitely see the spots. Here is a sample of what I mean - 5:43
