TOOLS AND MATERIALS LIST:
-T20 Torx
-Tweezers
-Small flat screwdriver or similar pry tool
-Nips (optional)
-Dremel or similar rotary tool
-Tape
-Marker
-Double-sided tape (4 inches)
-Drill and 3/16" bit
-Silicone
-Electrical tape and/or heat shrink
-147in (3.7m) of red 18-20 gauge wire
-67in (1.7m) of black 18-20 gauge wire
-Hanger or wire pull
-8mm hex nut socket
NOTES:
I could not find any wiring under the hood that was ambient light dependent, so I chose to run the 12v power wire to the rear of the vehicle. Once at the rear you could also choose to tap into one of the license plate lights to achieve the same result. This requires removing the bumper and would extend the time to complete this project.

I applaud you for modifying your I3, taking the time to record the process you found best for you and tolerating the douche bags bombarding you with negative comments. People think because it is a BMW...that it is prestigious and perfection from the manufacturer. These people are not car enthusiast and have no appreciation for individuality.

Superb how to video... I watched the whole thing and realized it was for an i3 at the end (which I own) lol.. So it ended up being the perfect video for me... Dunno if I'm brave enough to attempt this though.. Looks really good and thanks for the video..
Why didn’t BMW just add this feature to their fleet of i3’s!

Thanks. I'm planning to add A LOT of 12V lighting to my i3. My plan is to purchase a waterproof fused terminal block (motorcycle or boat) wired to a relay to one of the ambient power source. AKA the LED powered cig socket which is powered during lock/unlock/running.
You know the LED bulbs dont last long on those, I replaced everything including bulbs and wire witg some better quality ones

I would love to find a logo path or puddle light for the 2017 i3 REX. It is mounted in the door handle and all I can find is ones that mount on the bottom of the door
I’m doing mine soon I just put two small lights tapping from those red back lights but I did run the wires on the out blue trim much easier trust me, I also adding led small blinkers on top of each tire (amber color as the oem blinkers ) Hiding under you never see the led light but will work with the hazard and turn signal each side ( no sure if you could imagine that but I did on my previous i3 look sick thanks for video

No a TH-camr but i kind put a small clip of what did so far it’s freaking cold and I haven’t finish the fenders turning signals I did run wires for that but haven’t plug yet, also I didn’t know back emblem is glue to the mirror I was hopping to do same as the front led emblem too bad too late I found is imposible, after run wires for that anyway hopefully you’ll se so far what I did
@@glhandy7481 nice work. What fog lights are you using? Do they just come on with the headlights?
@@mattehelfrich I got power from plate light and the little red light on the back side to get the 12volt power and they light up with the running lights
I’m happy that you made this video. But it’s a no for me. I thought it was going to be flush with the hood. It just doesn’t look right to me. Again thank you for showing boss.
But is it legal to have such a led emblem in front? I have talked to someone and they said behind goes fine but in front said them not fine falcon said it but any big deal?
Legal, well going 1 mph over the speed limit isn't leagal either but everyone does it...I've never had a problem with it. So no big deal.
Nice job, about how long did the installation take? On a scale of 1 easy to 5 hard, where would you rate the difficulty of the install?
In my state (MD), it’s not legal to have any red illumination facing forward.
Thanks! Install took a couple hours all together but with this handy video it would be shorter for sure! Difficulty is 2.5 out of 5. Same in my state, no blue or red illumination on non-emergency vehicles 👍
I have to say, nice work, something I'd want to do, but boy, that is why too much work for that little bit of cosmetic gain. That said, I think it would look much better is the lighting was lower intensity, making for a more subtle look, more upscale looking, and not domestic Mustang brute force.
can you show how you changed the lightbulb in your car to make it blue
@Aalivia Alize higher trim levels come with it that way from the factory. Not sure if you can retrofit it afterwards.

I wanted the 12V connection switched with the lights. Tell me where a closer connection would be?

I knew someone was going to comment this. You kind of gave yourself extra work for no reason. The wire that goes to that side marker probably ends up in the fuse box lol
you only needed to wire that to your front side light wires 2 minute job 2 foot of wire ,and i think its ileegal in the front ,
Those front side lights are inside the headlight assembly and are controlled by the Canbus. Did you think my first idea was to go all the way to the back? It won't work the way you have described, trust me I've tried. Also not illegal as long as it's not blue or red LED. Many cars (Mercedes, Lincoln, VW...etc) come with illuminated front emblems from the factory...

If BMW ever decides to add this option to my BMW, then I will do that, but installing some fake Chinese LED, no thanks. That will probably depreciate the value of the BMW instantly.
Hell No! Respectfully meant demolish my original BMW front or tail logo for a cheap made in China 2 weeks lasting light, just to impress who and be cool for who? Hahaha NEVER!
