Rochester was another of a few Actors who were most beloved by his Fans, and, friends...As a kid I loved his method of acting because he was a Master at his craft as well as a good, decent man!
Rochester sang on many episodes but I have been looking for This one for quite a while because I didn't remember whixh episode had it. He strained his voice selling newspapers yet he was a much loved character in the show. He was One of the main characters who was with Jack in his radio program due many years.
Anderson was a riot. Benny made it clear that he reversed the role of Rochester from servant to master. It was Rochester who ruled the roost at Benny's TV home. Thanks to Benny's unfailing support, Anderson became very wealthy, owning a lot of LA real estate. No one cried harder at Benny's funeral than Eddie Anderson. What a guy!
I'm old enough to remember listening to the Jack Benny show on my grandmothers HUGE radio . RIP Eddie Anderson --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_%22Rochester%22_Anderson Thanks for this video MrPrivateShow .
It's easy to look at this and see a dated stereotype. Look again though. Jack handed the stage over to Eddie Anderson (Rochester) and let him own it. Consider also, when a hotel wouldn't rent a room to Eddie, Jack took his entire group out of that hotel to one that would take him.
Rochester owned the house I live in today. It’s in LA where many black Hollywood celebs lived. He bought it from a man that was Nat King Coles limo driver. Rochester did not live there. His x-wife and family did.
The actor that portrayed Rochester is Eddie Anderson Anderson's vocal cords were ruptured when he was a youngster selling newspapers in San Francisco. The newsboys believed those who were able to shout the loudest sold the most papers. The permanent damage done to his vocal cords left him with the gravel voice familiar to both radio listeners and television viewers over a course of more than twenty years.
This is from a live episode that originally aired on April 19, 1953. If you're aware of the various running gags on Jack's radio and TV shows, you'll know that he often earned "extra money" by providing most of Los Angeles with laundry service, window cleaning services, and any money-making opportunities he could think of- usually involving Rochester in them. In this episode, we're led to believe Benny also operates a "lunch wagon", selling food to his hungry production crew at CBS.
His character's full name was "Rochester Van Jones"- but, as Jack fondly recalled in his autobiography, EVERYONE came to know Eddie Anderson as just "Rochester".
At first I thought it a little insulting that they call him 'Rochester' and not, at least Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, which is his name. But then I got to thinking how many years he did Rochester on radio and TV, his impeccable comic timing to match Benny line for line... he BECAME the part of Rochester as much as Harpo became Harpo.
Thanks for uploading, yes now that most of us know better it now looks appalling but the timing and performances are so good it still stands up as great comedy. It does make me uncomfortable though, I am glad we have grown
Les Ger The Marx Brothers were also Jewish and funny.. W.C.Fields was not and also funny. What their religious background to do with being funny? Perhaps you are a Nazi?

Jack portrayed himself as a money-grubbing skinflint, but, in reality, he made "Rochester" a very wealthy man.

That's so cool. I currently listen to Jack Benny podcasts dating back to the 30s!

That's too bad but on the other hand I always liked his voice because it suited the lines well.
RavenRuled Yeah, it really did..i honestly thought that he would talk that for the character, didn't realize that was a result of vocal cord damage
Karl Smith oh wow i didn't either
Karl Smith - Thanks for the information . Here is Andersons Wikipedia biography --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_%22Rochester%22_Anderson
Tough thing to happen to a person at any age, much less so young. Having said that, it's hard to imagine Rochester sounding like anyone but Rochester.

Would love to see the old shows today instead the language TV uses to day
The Don Wilson gag is great
Live show - they really worked performers hard back in the good old days!
His character's full name was "Rochester Van Jones"- but, as Jack fondly recalled in his autobiography, EVERYONE came to know Eddie Anderson as just "Rochester".
Love Eddie Rochester
Heh... look on TH-cam for the What's My Line episode with Rochester. He tried to disguise his voice with limited results.
love u jack! thanks for the upload. (:
Rochester rocks!
"Feet do your thing"
so kevin spacey as frank underwood is just cosplaying a jack-benny-as-president fanfiction.
Congratulations, youve just discovered the key to success in show business - Steal from the best!
At 7:50 That's Hank Patterson aka Fred Ziffel coming up from the left to buy a sandwich.
Larry Grayson must have watched Jack Benney for some of his gestures....
Rochester didn't sing on the radio show, unless it was for comic purposes.
I always thought Rochester was Hong Kong Phooey
even the voice is similar, I wouldn't be surprised if they were related.

Rochester ❤️
that crossed my mind, he does resemble kevin Spacey a bit

When did Kevin spacey do this movie?
that rochester guy must've lost his voice a lot doing that stuff.
Does that one dude look like Charlie Sheen or what?
Stephen Colbert owes a lot to Jack Benny.
That idiot doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as Jack Benny.
Rochester took Jack's golf clubs
Family Guy brought me here
Over reacting just a little?
You wouldn't even know he was Jewish because he actually was funny.
as opposed to you who isn't funny no matter what religion you are
You wouldn't even know you were a human being...
.
wow thats brave of you to move all the way from munich in 1933 into the present with great thought and brilliance ...like a cheap steak knife
Les Ger The Marx Brothers were also Jewish and funny.. W.C.Fields was not and also funny. What their religious background to do with being funny?
Perhaps you are a Nazi?
Dear redcomic619,

Ha! Common courtesy on the internet?
