I am enjoying you channel SO much. I have been painting for 25 years. I want to be there at the Portrait Society someday. I'm learning from you, young teacher! I am an old teacher that can learn new tricks! Thanks for your insights. Keep it up.

I've been trying this year to do SOMETHING artistic daily. I carry my sketchbook everywhere and have a small still life setup in my tiny art studio so even if i don't have a subject I'm aiming to study, it's always ready for another round of painting. I keep a live plant still life and it always has subtle changes (leaves or flowers bloom, die, fall off, ect) so it gives me a constant setup to work with. I try to make my opportunities work for me.

I found that creating a painting traveling kit has helped me paint more. It’s allowed me to combine my love for hiking and nature and the bonus, getting out of a crowded house, away from kids, my two jobs, and no cell phone signal for anything to bother me. I finished my last drawing commission in the park this way. It was really enjoyable !

chelsea, i really enjoyed this video .. I carry a small kit with me wherever i go , and as you mentioned, waiting rooms, coffee shops, park benches.. wherever i am , i can pull out that sketchbook and do something , anything , to keep the muscle memory going.. I also sketch and paint my morning coffee lol doing that has helped me experiment with different mediums, different approaches, color palettes, etc.. I love it , and definitely cannot wait for some perfect scenery or muse .. they are all around us , and I feel so lucky that I can use that as my inspiration to keep learning .. Thanks so much for your videos and sharing your own thoughts through this crazy journey we are all in.. Norakag, here 👍👍

It’s okay. You’re still an artist.

"Lowering the stakes..." I like that. As in, let go to let it flow, detach fr the result and be fully present in each moment of the creation to feel the evolution of it. That's when you might surprise yourself with something truly great that you otherwise would think is beyond your capability... but really it's because of your fear of failure. Thank you for this video. My normal block is due to fear of failure. This gives me a focus to distract fr that. Cheers!

Excellent points, I think it is true of most things. Thanking action, making adjustments, and then doing it all over leads to improvement, much more waiting for the right moment to be inspired. Do the work, let the outcome take care of itself works across many activities. Great video!

I pretty much took a break from painting. Mostly due to being in 2 classes this spring semester took a lot of my time. Now that I'm on summer break I have a goal on getting back to my 2-3 paintings a month schedule again slowly. Thanks for these weekly chat videos Chelsea. I definitely gotta get back into my fun abstract paintings again. I do miss it.

I am not sure about this. While it is true that practice is essential and that more practice is better, constant practice sets up a different problem. As an artist it is one's job to mirror the human condition and that requires all of the senses. More than the outbound effort of painting or any other such activity, we need to be highly tuned to receiving input from the world and our fellow humans. A child's smile is enhanced in the eye of the observer by knowing and understanding whether the smile reflects the wonder or love of a puppy or a parent or ice cream. It's not as good to observe through a paint brush as it is to simply be open to the world around us. There is time for painting. There are painters and there are painters, some paint more others less. Some will be great and others not so much. It will always be so. But in my nearly 70 years of experience, it's the person who can take in the world and try to understand it who is better balanced and able to do good work. I've known too many one or two dimensional CEOs whose purview is the balance sheet. Just because you are an artist does not make you immune from being a one dimensional person. I love your work!

I love watching your videos especially on the portraits how you sculpt, mold, push and pull the paint to transform it into the portrait. It looks so realistic. Love the style. Do you mix your pigments as you go or premix a few and add onto color as you move along?

Maybe it is in other videos, but I could not see in this one, or the previous portrait I saw you paint how you go about deciding where your initial marks should me made, then as you make your adjustments how your are coming to those decisions.
For example, in this video you made several adjustment to the nose and forhead. How did you analyze this? Are you sight sizing, looking at a photograph and taking measurements, etc.?

I'm working live off a model, and not sight size, so I'm eyeballing it!

I looked at this title and immediately went "No. I am not. No matter what this is actually about, I am not painting enough." And the evidence is my 0 finished paintings this year.
Edit: No, I also don't do much of the casual painting or drawing and yes, it absolutely is the reason why painting is so hard and intimidating for me that I struggle to finish pieces.

Are You Painting Enough? No .... cool concept having painting as a defalt activity. I'm going to think about that.
