- I'll be working on more Mud Cloth Canes because I love them. My original class was created for CraftArtEdu and sold for many years and still sells. I cannot do those canes on TH-cam so I will be teaching new ones. This is Part 1. When will I release Part 2? I honestly don't know. The series will just grow.

Dear lady, 95% of the wonderful clay artists I watch are in their basements alone. That’s how they do such wonderful work. None as wonderful as you. I thank you for your generosity of spirit in teaching these canes. I’m so glad you show your process and when things dont go exactly as plan. It shows us how you do work arounds and how you get out of tight corners also. I dearly appreciate the time you spend in your basement with your dog and kitten. I spend it with my teeny dog and kitten. And just putter. I cant decide what i want to do. I’m a attention deficit crafter. I used to think that was a funny thing. Now as I’m older i just think its sad I didn’t choose and decide what i wanted to do. I love your work, i love your kind spirit and i love that you make everyone know that they can make the beautiful things you do so try to make it different. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words. You are so right, we spend a lot of time in the company of only our dear furbabies! They are the patient presence that fends off the solitary hours in my studio. I love to teach and knowing that what I am showing and explaining is helping. My mistakes have taught me so much, understanding them and solving problems has, in so many ways, kept polymer clay interesting fir me. I, too, have a rather short attention span! I do. I have been doing poly clay since about 1990. I was using FIMO and Cernit then while stationed in Berlin, Germany. Your book was the FIRST AMERICAN BOOK I bought when I returned to the States - and I still use it to this day. I am so happy to follow you now on TH-cam! THANK YOU, Donna!

Thank you so much for all your wonderful tutorials. I love the various patterns from mud cloth, and, as I am into sewing I actually have purchased several yards of several different patterned mud cloth in the past. Your video has inspired me to drag them all out and see what I can do with some of the patterns that I have on my yardage. I will start with your gorgeous canes from part 1 and also now I see part 2 has dropped. I love your videos so much, and especially love the way you show problem solving. I make far more "traditional" jewelry - silver mostly, but also dabble in polymer clay, so I am not super experienced with polymer since I don't spend as much time with it. But I have several of your books and love your channel, and have learned so much from you. Thank you kindly.

LOL - I would guess I am learning more from "it's not as pretty" than I would have if it worked out perfectly. LOVED that second texture sponge. It's nice and defined. I could see that on the outside of something with antiquing. Thanks.

Hi Donna, I record videos alone, without a director or camera man. Now that I've been making my own videos for some years I totally appreciate the LONG list of people needed to work on big productions.
As for keeping your hands in frame, the best thing I've found is to keep the camera zoomed out while recording, then zoom in while editing. Because no amount of tape or marks on the workspace will keep us from getting into the zone and totally forgetting we have a camera running. 🤣🤣🤣

reduction is the most challenging part of caning. try to make your clays as close to the same softness but I also try to make the clay in the middle softer.i can always squash it down but it takes a lot of effort to get it to rise!

Donna, I Clay in a basement as well, on an old IKEA table that I love because it has storage in the middle, as well as being foldable! Sometimes the dogs and cat keep me company and sometimes they don't. Lighting in my basement is my biggest issue.

You did well staying in frame! The struggle is real. Not that I've posted any of my own work yet, but you can try putting loud tape a little outside the out-of-frame edges of your work space as a "don't go past here" reminder. I sometimes use washi I don't like or masking tape and I paint it a bright color.
I put hvac tape corners down and I hope it helps. I need to investigate a better set up… I love the wiggly lines! ❤️

Hi Donna, it’s nice to see you back. Happy new year. I sit in my basement by myself. Well, I have four cats and a foster. They love to come and leave their fur behind. I’ve almost taken over the whole basement. It’s where I go to get peace and quiet. I have issues with my hands so I don’t make canes. But I still love to watch your process. Thank you.

I haven't really started yet but I've watched your videos the most (sometimes more than 1x) and I can't wait to create some of the magic that you have laid out for us. If there's a place to pay for classes, please post so we can take them. I did have one thought as my mind races after watching your videos trying to figure out how to do all these patters, etc. I love your mud cloth series. I was thinking you could do a Skinner blend of black/gold/orange to go with your wavy lines cane in white. I think it would look like tiger! If you end up trying this, I hope I can see the video. This looks so fun, Donna! I will be trying to do this technique this weekend. The textured patterns look great! I did see on Bottle Tree that they are made from filter screens but can't track down any sets in the US. Will you offer them again, or do you know where we can find them?

I used to record myself making art and to help me stay in frame I put pieces of tape just outside of what could be seen on camera.
I must try that, I get so caught up in what I’m doing, I wander off. Staying under the lens is one of my New Year’s resolutions! Thanks!

I wish I had them but they’re from friends in Spain. Be on the lookout for thin filter type material. Aquarium, hvac, that’s basically what this is. I will ask Dani and Natalia…❤️

Now, those were sold by Dani and Natalia in Spain. We had them for a time but don’t have them anymore. I’d check out aquarium foam and any of that kind of filter material. I bet you find something similar❤️
Is there a difference with starting the wrap in the middle of the square cane vs starting from a corner??
I think you get the same thing. Might be a bit easier to trim if you start at a corner, though! 😊
As a newbie to polymer clay, can I ask why you started the all black in the round, then end up making it square?

setting #3 is how thick as each and every pasta machine is different...wish we had a standard
Erick, usually it doesn't much matter - try to think of thicknesses as thin, medium, thick because that's usually all you need to know. I try to include the settings to make life simpler for everyone but basically, when I work, I don't much care about the specific numbers. Make sense? Cheers, D
