Mark, I appreciated your response to the question of identity and how it posits both in the UL and then more broadly touching on all quadrants. In my own work, I liken it to the idea of cultural identity and cultural bias. The former placing you in the context of the common experiences people have as a member of a particular generation, the latter one that places a group in a common value set. In that sense one is part of a larger whole. This can be physical as in an institution or aspirational as in an affiliation. I could also feel the nature of the other question you responded to regarding how one could hone in on a series of criteria to answer “the question of the project.” My sense was that the question was more about the novelty of design. The nuanced place between empathy and criteria. I see this in your left and right sides, but perhaps resides on the “lines” - not quite in or out. The 20th century notion of form somehow following function, has largely been discredited. So form can actually be an aspirational decision. And for some, it reflects a place of ambiguity that neither reflects a persona or is grounded in program. I am arriving at the series a bit late, but I am looking forward to viewing them all. I always enjoyed your lectures at Washington University when you were a professor there. It is wonderful to see the progression of these ideas. All the best, Evan Bronstein.
