Remember school only started little over a month ago and the new Auto tech classes are probably still doing the book work sections before the get hands on
Look up how to do a (pull string alignment). Pull a string across the back tires up to the front tires. Swing the string in until it is barely touching the sides of the rear tire and see if the front tire is pointing in or out and adjust your tie rod until it is straight with the string. Do both sides and it'll be almost perfect.
Every vehicle that I have done a string alignment on was checked at a shop and they have all told me that the alignment was almost perfect.
You'll need an extra person to help you do this. It usually takes 2 people.

I'm new to this Humvee. What is so special about it and what is it being used for? To my knowledge it's a military vehicle. Though I don't see any benefit in the humvee because it doesnt seem that stable nor proof against everything like an actual tank. Would love to hear the benefits and the worth!

Business Mail they are usually 20k stock but then get up to around 200k armored up which is not cheap at all for us but for the government it’s pretty damn cheap and the maintenance cost is low

Good job on the Front End rebuild. Because of the slack it had, the Humvee probably had been adjusted to compensate for the slack before you got it. Therefore when you put it back together with new parts everything was slightly off. Considering everything is measured in .001" of an inch it doesn't take much to change a degree of alignment... First front end machine I use had strings and mirrors to set the front end properly. It was made by Hunter, the new ones use lasers and have digital readouts to make it much faster and easier to align a vehicle... Thank you for the motivation and sharing your's and your family's life with us.

Hey Matt, To do a basic toe adjustment on a Humvee point the steering wheel straight and go around all four tires with a string half way up the tire and tighten. The string should touch the side walls on front and rear of each tire and adjust as necessary . The rear wheels have toe adjustment as well. Jim

CONGRATULATIONS Mere!!!!! 1000 push- ups in a day is very doable. I did 1200 in a day when I was in the Army, of course I was only 19 at the time. I'd be hard pressed to do 100 in a day now that I'm over 50 and my health is not to good.

Quick easy tip for getting an alignment close before driving to the alignment shop. Measure inside of tire to inside of tire at the front of the tire and the same on the back of the tire, try to make them the same by adjusting the alignment. This way no damage is done on the way to get an alignment.

I do alignments on hmmwvs every couple of weeks at my job it is super easy. You already did the hard part. Measure your tire rods and make sure they are the same length. And then find a tread point the same distance out on the front and back of the tires 16 1/2 inches up from the ground. It should be 1/4 inch closer in the front than in the back.
Best part of the latest videos is the “Don’t tell Mere” at the end.
I wish for a Humvee to fix up too. Got a lot of memories of the them from my time in the Army and time in the middle east. The Humvees did see a lot of hard use so I imagine any on the used market will need a lot of work.

GOOD JOB MATT !! I did a million center drag links, tie rod ends, idler arms, pitman arms and seals. Ball joints, king pins...etc,etc.etc. You did a great job !! From pulling the pitman arm ( pain in the neck huh).lol...to installing new cotter pins. Good job. peace

Hey Matt, to do the job on the Hummer correctly you need to check for wear on the upper and lower ball joints. Both sides. If any have play in them the rest of the parts you just put on will wear out prematurely . A job worth doing is worth doing rite.

Heads up on the suspension work. You dont need to count the turns, just take a measurement from end of the item you re replacing to a fixed point on the bar / shaft whatever. Because if you hold up the new piece vs. the piece you are replacing, they are rarely the same length. Also, you can do your own alignments on most trucks. If you are good at line of site, super easy. But can set the steering wheel to center and work from there with using the back tires as guides. I always take my trucks into have them measured afterwords to ensure I am within specs. Much cheaper to have a professional place inspect then to do.

Good thing you learned how to fix your steering on the humvee. Very common for each part in that linkage to go out. I was a humvee mechanic in the army. Your also gona have to learn to change the half shafts, starter, alternator, and fuel pump. All very common issues.
Matt , next time you are aligning something like this, just measure the threads before and after.
Heads up matt. Next time you do outer tie rods, count the turns IN. Not out. So, count the turns in with the old end. Then, screw the new end in all the way and count the turns out and itll be pretty well aligned

When I last drove in the US they had some highways that looked like they were segmented and the grout between them had worn down making that rhythmic thud thud thud. Thought it was the car but saw the inch wide gaps when I pulled over to check.

3 years ago I did that challenge. Build up to it. The way I did it was I set an alarm for 10 min intervals and did the 16 hour one. it wasn't too tough until hour like 13. The next few days sucked hard though so don't plan anything exciting or strenuous.

fyi, if you ever replace tie rod ends again always measure from the edge of the sleeve to the center of the joint. So much more accurate than counting turns.

Use a measuring tape to make the major grooves the same distance apart from the front and back of the tires. And centre the steering wheel first

put a temporary, close ish alignment on the humvee by using a tape measure and measuring from the back of one tire to the same spot on the back of the other tire then the front to front and making the 2 measurements the same then make the front measurement about an 1/8 in smaller then the back

First day in basic, my squad was smoked for a little over 1,000 pushups.. I feel ya man. By the end of the day, about half of the kids were on their knees to keep pushing.

@@benmc9657 im pretty sure dog and cat balls are a little more involved than removing a steaks balls, which is what matt does. And like i was implying, its really easy to replace the steering. I would know ive done that job to at least 100 humvees. 2 to 3 a day for 12 months straight.

You could do a simple toe adjustment with the steering wheel straight and measure in front and back of the front tire at at equal heights to set it to 0 toe should be enough to get you to the alignment shop. That way your tires won’t scrub when driving there.
