This is awesome! DIY Duke would be very proud. I would like to see the strength differences between rebar, mesh, fiberglass etc. If you could make a plate reinforcement that can withstand repeated overhead drops I'll buy a mold. (Wouldn't use them like that but it shows how strong they could be)
I’ve been using my first set I made for a few months now. Deadlifts, rows, RDLs, etc with drops between sets. No problems so far. I would sell something that I hadn’t tested myself and found to be strong enough for the average user.

Great moulds and process dude, most lifters don't realize. It's rare that plates touch the floor anyway and concrete plates can survive being dropped on a sand pit area, get a container 4 inches high, 100 inch long, 50 wide for power clean drops. I remeber the strongman competition with atlas stone drops was on a sandy beach, sand is great at absorbing impact
Excellent diy video. I too have tried to purchase steel weights, only to be disappointed with the level of greed in the world. I used to sneer at the old plastic coated concrete weights. Your mold is really great. I hope it effects the demand of steel. I also applaud your attention to detail. I work in the concrete construction industry. Just a helpful hint. It is my understanding that the rebar should be 2" from the edge of concrete to prevent cracks. Especially for those who feel they need to drop the bar from head height.

I’m hard headed and make a mold with a 3D printer instead of buying weights. Took 2 weeks to make the 45 lbs plate mold but she works! Would have been a lot easier to have just purchased your kit (which I just found out about) lol

Wow you're pretty scientific and did an amazing job with everything, I would love to make some myself but I'm afraid I would mess up and not get it looking nearly as good as yours.
You might not get it the first time or even the 2nd or thirds to look pretty, but. if you weight the concrete dry first, it would defenetly be functional for what the main point is, and that ir to train with them. The pretty part is gonna come later. Give it a try brother🔥😉

I've started seeing your plates show up on for sale apps in San Antonio. I was wondering where they were getting the molds. Now I know. Awesome job brother. I too am a maker, okay maybe more of a "I can't ever finish a project" kinda guy. Anyways, absolutely love your idea and drive, keep it up. Next, build some dumbbell molds, please. We need those.
@@stixandstone dumbbells would be an even bigger game changer because if you did basically just like a long tube that we could fill to different heights for different weights, people could build entire sets of dumbbells with pvc handles for like $200 vs thousands for a full flat-bottom set
cover it in table top epoxy/hardener or Rhino truck bed liner for a stronger finish. I have found that joint compound or spackle mesh netting works as well as rebar for the center of the plates, plus you can use multiple layers much easier (or both the netting and rebar) .

Have you thought about coating them with truck bed liner? I think it would strengthen/protect the outside of the concrete, as well as delay any weathering, and you could use different colors to help indicate weight. Just food for thought, but otherwise I love the idea and think these are pretty dang great!
Thanks! I personally have left mine raw just to see how they handle normal use. But a lot of my customers have used truck bed liner, plastidip, flex seal, and liquid rubber before painting their plates. Looks really good.

But that’s part of the beauty of these, even if they only last 6 months to a year, more can be made at little extra cost compared to the prices of new plates. Michael Benell a few customers have said that spray-in bedliner works better than stuff like plastidip. And it looks amazing. I plan on having a few more videos made up soon for the rack and all the attachments I have made so far.
Fair price, I think it would be wise to submerge the plates in after they have set for 24 hours and keep them under water for a week. This will add massive amounts of strength to the concrete and make them last a lifetime
Scientifically, how does submerging the concrete under water while it's still curing cause it to be much "stronger"? Assuming you mean it's more durable when you say stronger.
OP pls explain the science. Everything I've learned in life has taught me that when moisture enters solid things it makes them less strong because water expands and contracts so much.
Jay N it would help with strength and longevity for sure. I’m not sure it’s absolutely necessary but anything you can spend time on to save money in the long run is a win in my book.
Just take the blade out and don’t put anything in instead. Leave it empty. Resting the guard up against the wall of the mold will vibrate hard. Resting the side of the saw will vibrate less intense.
I intend to make 2 very heavy plates with your mold. I have plenty of steel 45s at home, but always wanted a pair of 100s. These are so wide though that I will make them as heavy as i possibly can. I'll use 2 pieces of bent rebar per plate. The fiberglass bits are great and I will use them, but UHP Concrete often uses metal strands. I dont have thin wires like that, but i have shitloads of old finishing nails. Think it would also help even more to use a bunch of those too? I think it would add a lot more tensile strength
You Have to Live It if you’re looking to add weight, lead shot works best. I’ve never tried nails to act like rebar so I can’t state whether or not that would help or hurt the concrete bonding.

Each mold can make numerous different weights. Medium mold makes 10-35lbs. Large mold makes 45-100lbs. You just weigh the amount of concrete you want for each plate you make.
I’ve had a couple people just hot glue their 1” ID pipe on top of the center index and it has worked very well. No need for modification and it’s easy to center on the index due to it being a circle.

I live in Jamaica and I'm interested in getting these molds. I've never come across 5,000 psi concrete out here, you'd think concrete only comes as 3,000 psi if you lived here. Do you think it would be feasible to use 3,000 psi concrete to make the weights?
kevin 4434 with bedliner/plastidip they will be strong. But I wouldn’t suggest slamming them as you would with production bumpers. They can handle drops from waist high onto rubber mats but they aren’t really made for dropping from overhead.

Just wondering, Is it normal for the sides of your plates to come off a lil bit? It kinda messes my round shape as the sides keeps coming off, any tips?
any idea of the difference in thickness between these and the likes of a bumper plate? how thick does a 45 come out roughly? you may have mentioned in the video but if you did i've missed it
The fibers help with dispersing the stress and helping with cracking through the concrete. It does what rebar does but on a smaller and more even scale.
Fibers help to control shrinkage cracking during initial set and curing. In theory, they don’t do anything after the set; however, I feel that they still help to control micro racking thereafter. According to the PHDs in our lab they don’t do anything long term. I personally believe they help in addition to some level of steel reinforcing around the circumference.
I’m working on a “gym tour” video to show off the things I’ve made. The problem with a “rack build” video is that I didn’t record any part of me building the rack 9 months ago. I just built it because I needed a place to lift at home during quarantine. I do have written plans for you to download in my site. But I’m not planning on making an I depth build video due to it already being done.
If I where to get the larger mold can I also make the less weight played like under 45. I’m looking for the basic 10 25 35 45 plates. Let me know which is best because to get both is too much for my budget
The lowest you should go with the big mold is 35lbs. The weights get too thin if you go lighter than that. You can do all those weights with the small mold though they will get fairly thick for the 45s. There is no discount code but I am doing free domestic shipping at the moment.

I’ve had three types of comments. 1) All in - they understand the process and the price and willing to buy. 2)like watching the video, thinks a cool idea, but are unsure if they can do the builds and pours so they opt out or buy in with some friends to make it cheaper and make more plates. 3) think I’m some clown trying to make a buck with a plastic bucket and completely don’t understand the labor and time it’s taken to get where I’m at to help people in this crazy time, as well as try to cut me down with a public comment while they would never put themselves out there for public assessment. Nik arshad Sulaiman this is a question based on perception. I have supplies, time, labor, and shipping costs to cover on my end. That being said, if someone were selling over 1000lbs of steel plates for $200, everyone would be clamoring to buy it and probably over bid to get it. These molds are strong, durable plastic and are able to make many sizes of plates after purchase. Buying the large mold, you can make 25lbs up to 100lbs plates in large batches. Small mold can make 5lbs up to 35lbs plates. They are built to last and be used by you and all of your friends to make many sets of plates. I’m not gouging people with my price. I’m honestly not making much profit per mold, especially since I’m covering shipping for domestic customers right now. Hope this answers your question.
Nik arshad Sulaiman because I choose to make strong reusable products. Making something that breaks and doesn’t last just because it’s cheap is not something I want to do.
satchm05 I did all the pre fab myself. Made a make form out of wood which was pour into an aluminum form at a foundry. Then the aluminum form is used to heat and vacuum form the plastic around it for the hundreds of molds I make and sell.
I use a thin kerf cutoff blade to take off the extra pipe, a 36 grit flap disc to flatten and smooth the cut, and and a diamond wheel to round over the back edge of the concrete to make it less sharp.
Ariel24K the mix I use is already above 5000psi, adding aggregate could make it stronger but I haven’t had any problems with my ready to mix bags of high strength concrete with my fibers added in as of yet.
Just mix it a little wet and you don't have to do anything mix in the mold nice and wet it will be flawless might take longer to dry but it will and be super smooth and don't have to do anything this guy is doing he's Koo koo
I would have put barbs or something on the pipe in the middle of the concrete so there's no chance that it breaks free from the concrete and slides out
@@stixandstone Oh you mean holes inside of the pipe? I thought I saw holes inside of the pipe. I think that's a pretty good idea though. I bought an Olympic barbell set for $200 I think before coronavirus and before the election and then after the election the price of steel went up and now that same Olympic barbell set is $400. Because it was just sitting in my storage unit and I didn't have anywhere to keep it so now if I want to go buy it again I have to spend $400

For sure! I was planning on doing that about a week ago but I gave my personal set to a college baseball player that needed them for his home training. Once I get my next set fully cured I will post a drop test.
Hot glue isn’t as strong as the concrete gripping the metal pipe. I carve grooves into the side of the pipes I sell so that they are more permanent in the plate centers. The hot glue is more of a sealant so the wet concrete doesn’t get into the center. It’s not a permanent bond to the mold.
The pipe sleeves are sized to fit onto any Olympic (2inch) bar. But I have also had a few people hot glue standard (1inch) pipe on top of the center index to make standard plates.
It’s not ruined. Let it cure an extra few days so it can pull away from the mold a bit more. It wil be a bit tougher to pop out of the mold but due to the weight, it should still come out with no real damage. It might also be a bit harder to clean the mold for the next pour as well.

You Have to Live It the mold is smooth enough and thick/durable enough to let go of the weight with minimal problems even without silicone spray. You might have to best your fists on top of it a bit more after you flip it this time 😆
45lbs plates (in the 17.5” mold) come out about 2.5” thick. If you want to make them thinner you can put scrap metal into the wet mix and it will be heavier with less thickness. Though at 1.5” it will be more liable to crack and break.
@@stixandstone okay now what do I need to do in order to get the weight accurate as much as possible? Let's say I'm making a 20kg plate( I'm from Europe pls bear with me. I'm not using lbs). Since I don't have a concrete mix right now. I'll mix cement sand and stones in ratio of 8kg,8kg,4kg i.e 2:2:1. Will weighing them dry give me an accurate weight of 45 lbs. Pls give me some tips if I'm missing any
K.O Serg you can do it either way. I weigh it wet and over shoot the goal weight by about a pound. Or you can measure out the dry cement to the exact weight and the mix with water and pour into the mold. Either way I would make it a bit heavier so you can grind/sand the back edge.
yooo my plates keep crumbling even after waiitng 3 days before removing from mold.... i need more water in my concrete? even watched videos on how to mix concrete lol
You want the consistency of the concrete with water to be like loose mash potato’s. You can ball it in your hand, but if you shake it, it should level itself.
If I’m not mistaken, mortar shrinks quite a bit more that blended concrete, which would make it more prone to cracking in larger, thicker amounts. Again, I could be wrong for thinking this, but I have also gotten glass smooth finishes with high psi concrete bags for most of my pours.
The concrete would be way too thin to make a 10lbs plate with the large (17-5”) mold. The smaller mold (12.5”) we sell can handle 10-35lbs plates while our large mold (17.5”) is good for 35-100lbs plates.
They hold up well. Going on 7 months with my personal set with no issues. Many customers on Instagram have posted their deadlifts with no problems. Controlling your eccentrics and lifting on rubber mats help too.

OK mate that's big of you, after watching your videos I made my own concrete weights too and it's been a life saver. It just pissed me of a bit some skinny little poser with bs tattoos acting like he designed the plate! I sent him a message and asked him if I cam make an order for 4 stix amd stone plate moulds from the US.. And I asked him why he had a map of Texas on his plate since he comes from a little village in Cambridgeshire 🤣

Woldnt soaking it in water add extra weight to it?
I found the same info. Submerge for a week so that it drys slowly which will prevent cracking

I intend to make 2 very heavy plates with your mold. I have plenty of steel 45s at home, but always wanted a pair of 100s. These are so wide though that I will make them as heavy as i possibly can. I'll use 2 pieces of bent rebar per plate. The fiberglass bits are great and I will use them, but UHP Concrete often uses metal strands. I dont have thin wires like that, but i have shitloads of old finishing nails. Think it would also help even more to use a bunch of those too? I think it would add a lot more tensile strength
You Have to Live It if you’re looking to add weight, lead shot works best. I’ve never tried nails to act like rebar so I can’t state whether or not that would help or hurt the concrete bonding.

Each mold can make numerous different weights. Medium mold makes 10-35lbs. Large mold makes 45-100lbs. You just weigh the amount of concrete you want for each plate you make.

I’ve had a couple people just hot glue their 1” ID pipe on top of the center index and it has worked very well. No need for modification and it’s easy to center on the index due to it being a circle.

I love my molds! Quick question though. Would you recommend using fast setting quickcrete instead for a faster cure time?
Most fast setting has a lower psi and is more brittle. I wouldn’t recommend it
I live in Jamaica and I'm interested in getting these molds. I've never come across 5,000 psi concrete out here, you'd think concrete only comes as 3,000 psi if you lived here. Do you think it would be feasible to use 3,000 psi concrete to make the weights?
3000psi can work. Just be careful with dropping the weight accidentally or on purpose.
Would these be strong enough to use as bumper plates if you sprayed them with bed liner or something?
kevin 4434 with bedliner/plastidip they will be strong. But I wouldn’t suggest slamming them as you would with production bumpers. They can handle drops from waist high onto rubber mats but they aren’t really made for dropping from overhead.

1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts gravel, 0.5 parts water should prove a very strong bond of concrete of you are mixing it yourself.

Check your water content with the instructions on your concrete bag. Also, allow them to cure longer before using them.
any idea of the difference in thickness between these and the likes of a bumper plate? how thick does a 45 come out roughly? you may have mentioned in the video but if you did i've missed it
45lbs plates come out about 2.5-2.75” thick. About the same as a production bumper.

What's the point of the fiberglass reinforcement? Won't the concrete stick together on its own?
The fibers help with dispersing the stress and helping with cracking through the concrete. It does what rebar does but on a smaller and more even scale.
Fibers help to control shrinkage cracking during initial set and curing. In theory, they don’t do anything after the set; however, I feel that they still help to control micro racking thereafter. According to the PHDs in our lab they don’t do anything long term. I personally believe they help in addition to some level of steel reinforcing around the circumference.

The lowest you should go with the big mold is 35lbs. The weights get too thin if you go lighter than that. You can do all those weights with the small mold though they will get fairly thick for the 45s. There is no discount code but I am doing free domestic shipping at the moment.
AJ M I use 2” stencils for the numbers. Everything else is already raised on the face of the plate and can be easily painted

Damn man, people be calling you out for price gouging on a mold that will save them hundreds of dollars. Just with a single plate alone! Meanwhile, they're on Offer Up selling a busted as ez curl with a single 10lb & a 25 for $300 FIRM.
I’ve had three types of comments. 1) All in - they understand the process and the price and willing to buy. 2)like watching the video, thinks a cool idea, but are unsure if they can do the builds and pours so they opt out or buy in with some friends to make it cheaper and make more plates. 3) think I’m some clown trying to make a buck with a plastic bucket and completely don’t understand the labor and time it’s taken to get where I’m at to help people in this crazy time, as well as try to cut me down with a public comment while they would never put themselves out there for public assessment.

Nik arshad Sulaiman this is a question based on perception. I have supplies, time, labor, and shipping costs to cover on my end. That being said, if someone were selling over 1000lbs of steel plates for $200, everyone would be clamoring to buy it and probably over bid to get it. These molds are strong, durable plastic and are able to make many sizes of plates after purchase. Buying the large mold, you can make 25lbs up to 100lbs plates in large batches. Small mold can make 5lbs up to 35lbs plates. They are built to last and be used by you and all of your friends to make many sets of plates. I’m not gouging people with my price. I’m honestly not making much profit per mold, especially since I’m covering shipping for domestic customers right now. Hope this answers your question.

On the thicker 100lbs plates not as much. But the thinner 45lbs it’s smart to add some rebar structure in the concrete for a longer life span.

How deep is the mold and approximately how many can I fit on a barbell?
Large mold is 8” deep. Medium mold is 6” deep. I can fit 5 45lbs plates on each side with a clip. 6 on each side without.
How did you go about getting your molds fabricated and how did they do the design work (to make it “raised”)?
satchm05 I did all the pre fab myself. Made a make form out of wood which was pour into an aluminum form at a foundry. Then the aluminum form is used to heat and vacuum form the plastic around it for the hundreds of molds I make and sell.

What kind of sanding disc are you using on your angle grinder ?
I use a thin kerf cutoff blade to take off the extra pipe, a 36 grit flap disc to flatten and smooth the cut, and and a diamond wheel to round over the back edge of the concrete to make it less sharp.
what about adding agregates ? wouldn't it makes the concrete stronger ?
Ariel24K the mix I use is already above 5000psi, adding aggregate could make it stronger but I haven’t had any problems with my ready to mix bags of high strength concrete with my fibers added in as of yet.

Just mix it a little wet and you don't have to do anything mix in the mold nice and wet it will be flawless might take longer to dry but it will and be super smooth and don't have to do anything this guy is doing he's Koo koo

I would have put barbs or something on the pipe in the middle of the concrete so there's no chance that it breaks free from the concrete and slides out

I bought an Olympic barbell set for $200 I think before coronavirus and before the election and then after the election the price of steel went up and now that same Olympic barbell set is $400. Because it was just sitting in my storage unit and I didn't have anywhere to keep it so now if I want to go buy it again I have to spend $400

For sure! I was planning on doing that about a week ago but I gave my personal set to a college baseball player that needed them for his home training. Once I get my next set fully cured I will post a drop test.
How did the pvc pipe stick to the concrete if it was glued to the mold?
Hot glue isn’t as strong as the concrete gripping the metal pipe. I carve grooves into the side of the pipes I sell so that they are more permanent in the plate centers. The hot glue is more of a sealant so the wet concrete doesn’t get into the center. It’s not a permanent bond to the mold.

So I bought silicone spray them forgot to use it, is this 100lb plate ruined?
It’s not ruined. Let it cure an extra few days so it can pull away from the mold a bit more. It wil be a bit tougher to pop out of the mold but due to the weight, it should still come out with no real damage. It might also be a bit harder to clean the mold for the next pour as well.

You Have to Live It the mold is smooth enough and thick/durable enough to let go of the weight with minimal problems even without silicone spray. You might have to best your fists on top of it a bit more after you flip it this time 😆

Can I make them as thick as a cast iron plate? i.e 1.5 inch thick ( I'm asking it for 45 lb plate)
45lbs plates (in the 17.5” mold) come out about 2.5” thick. If you want to make them thinner you can put scrap metal into the wet mix and it will be heavier with less thickness. Though at 1.5” it will be more liable to crack and break.

Let's say I'm making a 20kg plate( I'm from Europe pls bear with me. I'm not using lbs). Since I don't have a concrete mix right now. I'll mix cement sand and stones in ratio of 8kg,8kg,4kg i.e 2:2:1. Will weighing them dry give me an accurate weight of 45 lbs. Pls give me some tips if I'm missing any
@@bigboyy6789 yes. Mix your concrete and weigh it dry to the plate weight you want. Then mix in water and pour.
I bought the mold is it better to weight the concrete dry or wet for more accurate weight?
K.O Serg you can do it either way. I weigh it wet and over shoot the goal weight by about a pound. Or you can measure out the dry cement to the exact weight and the mix with water and pour into the mold. Either way I would make it a bit heavier so you can grind/sand the back edge.

You want the consistency of the concrete with water to be like loose mash potato’s. You can ball it in your hand, but if you shake it, it should level itself.
Can you use mortar for a smoother look instead of concrete?
If I’m not mistaken, mortar shrinks quite a bit more that blended concrete, which would make it more prone to cracking in larger, thicker amounts. Again, I could be wrong for thinking this, but I have also gotten glass smooth finishes with high psi concrete bags for most of my pours.

Can this mold be used to make 10lb 17.5 diameter weights?
The concrete would be way too thin to make a 10lbs plate with the large (17-5”) mold. The smaller mold (12.5”) we sell can handle 10-35lbs plates while our large mold (17.5”) is good for 35-100lbs plates.

They hold up well. Going on 7 months with my personal set with no issues. Many customers on Instagram have posted their deadlifts with no problems. Controlling your eccentrics and lifting on rubber mats help too.

Hello mate, i have just seen someone here in the uk attempting to sell concrete weights made from your moulds under a different brand name. I just wanted to know if this legal and if your ok with this.
I’m not going to chase down someone that wants to make a profit off of my products. More power to them. A lot of folks have made money off of the extra plates they make.
