I was blown away by the absolute..... humanity that shines through Charlie. By that, I mean I think we all have a little bit of him inside us, that part that's insecure and the part that generally lives in shadow due to our natural fears of vulnerability. It was so clear to me that Brendan threw everything he had at that portrayal, and he completely earned that Oscar. The way Charlie's voice fails him when he says, "I need to know I've done one thing right with my life" is everything you need to know about how incredibly talented Brendan is. Sadie (Ellie) and Hong (Liz) hit massive home runs here too. Wow. So, so well done.
Appreciate you letting us see your unrestrained emotion like that. Of all the Best Actor oscars in recent years, Brendan Fraser's is the most deserved in my opinion. Not an easy performance to capture emotionally through all that fat suit and makeup, and he got it just right in my opinion. Not too showy, not too overly dramatic. Perfectly expressed emotion at the precise moments. The way the emotion gradually builds up in the last 15 minutes kinda catches a viewer off guard which makes the ending a beautiful artistic masterpiece.
Agreed, I feel like in recent years many of them felt lackluster. This movie is such a boring premise and it takes a great actor to bring out such brutal emotion in what is essentially just one guy in his house trying to make things right with just a few other characters, we really don't get to see anything beyond his front door, just like him and this movie slayed me and my bro.
I saw it twice in theatres. Everyone was crying. People spilled popcorn everywhere they could not contain themselves, myself included. Not one dry eye in either viewing
You have such a sweet beautiful spirit & heart. It’s amazing how spoken words can hit directly in one’s soul. I could hear my mom, my dad, my sons, husband & myself throughout.
The movie is incredible, easily in my top 5. I cried my tears out, but mostly because i lost my dad 1 year prior to this movie coming out so it hit hard. Brendan Fraser deserved that Oscar so fucking bad, the emotions he displayed in this movie was something no one else could have done. He is brilliant!
My son and I saw this together at the cinema, and were both deeply moved by it ... many people (including me) were wiping their eyes as they left. Incredible acting, heart-wrenching pain, beautiful emotion, it's all there and portrayed mostly inside one rather dreary room! Thanks for your unashamedly raw reaction, Lipps ❤
Thank you. Thank you for your honest response to this amazing movie. I've been needing a way to finally open up about my childhood. I'm in my 30's and i'd rarely done so. This movie has broken a wall down. And experiencing it with someone else {albeit vicariously} was cathartic. Once more. Thank you.
"I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life" my favorite line of the entire movie that and his Alan seeing what he did to himself in the afterlife was great as well
Thank you for this reaction, beautiful. I saw this at a screening here in LA last year and it was most definitely the best film of the year (to me). Fraser winning Best Actor at the Oscars made me elated, relieved, and have faith in the Academy. He deserved it even if I loved Butler and others up that year. Thank you again.
I recommend his (Director Darren Aronofsky) other movie "Requiem For A Dream" as well. Another one of those 'amazing but hard to watch' movies like the whale was, albeit a totally different subject.
I finally watched this movie and cried just as much as you! It was incredibly moving. Like you said about yourself, I'm also easily empathic, and there was something about this movie that I haven't really experienced before. I think it might have to do with his impending death that keeps being brought up. Every time there's an opportunity for him to save himself, he rejects it. And as the movie continues, it becomes more apparent that he's not going to save himself. No miracle will happen. We know it's over with no chance for hope. Just his desperation to find something meaningful about his life.... I'm not sure though. I literally finished the movie and hour ago and still have tissue nearby if I cry again haha.
felt the need to keep tissues near by even after an hour post credits. I think this movie handles death and regret from a very realistic angle. It's not about absolving ones self or saving oneself but rather finding peace and apologizing before he's gone forever. And it wrenches at your heart when you realize if he had tried this years earlier he could have found more hope and reason to live amongst his regrets.
I cry everytime I watch this movie. It’s the best movie of my lifetime in my honest opinion. One location, very few but extremely talented actors, amazing soundtrack, emotion in every scene.
I was emotional the entire time, cried here and there..but for some weird reason, it was seeing that end credits that broke me. I knew he died well before that showed up…but it just hit so hard for some reason. It seems only a few people cry super hard at that. There has to be something to it.
Great reaction so emotional and it earns its place in the "most tearful films of the year" list as it moves slowly yet efficiently towards its overwhelmingly emotional ending, especially elevated by the most subtly powerful & irrefutably moving performance of Brendan Fraser's career. Love it! Keep up the good work.
One of those movies you have to watch at least once in your life. It's a phenomenal movie and I can relate to his pain on so many levels. Trauma is trauma
I'm a year late to all of the reactions to this movie 😭 But still, I loved your reaction! I actually liked Thomas, the new life kid, UNTIL that scene where he basically said Alan died because he was gay. I had so much hope that he'd be a nice support to Charlie at least until he died, but no. I was DEVASTATED when he said that, it felt like a complete betrayal since he didn't seem too bothered by their relationship and wanted Charlie to just have peace before he died...until after he read that Bible passage :(
RIGHT!?!? that part stung so much. And never late, I love that this movie continues to get comments because it is one of my favorite movies. This and Close (also by a24) are two movies that deal emotional damage tenfold. If you haven't seen Close yet I highly recommend but also have a friend/therapist on speed dial.
This was a very honest review but I would suggest just letting some of the clips play out a little longer, we missed a lot of amazing scenes. Thank you for being natural during the review!!!! I'm subscribing
Thank you for your heartfelt and true reaction to this movie … this will forever be one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite reactions because of the raw emotion. … if you want a soul crusher and beautiful movie as similar in a different way, you should watch seven pounds with Will Smith. God bless !
If you have to constantly convince people that you're good and righteous and you can "save people" I don't think you're trying to convince the sinners bud.
logitech something or others. but i can NOT recommend them. I've had many issues with them, but I spent a lot on them and am very bad at returning items even when there are issues. So I have kept them. I'm my own downfall. But don't buy them lol
I think the message of this is to learn not to judge individuals. The star is the young Christian guy. What lasts, is that the viewer judges the Christian guy negatively in contrast to the morbidly obese guy who they judge positively despite society telling them otherwise.
@LIPPSMACKER the one where Brendan Fraser delivers his iconic like in the movie. "I just want to know I did one thing right in my life." God that scene that delivery is phenomenal.
I just broke down with tears and my chest shaking when it was revealed it was her essay he was clinging on to all this time
IT STOLE MY SOUL
Idk but that Line: “People are Amazing” broke me for some reason.
The whale was a movie about a selfish, emotional, gluttonous, dumb man. That suffered from the karma of his character and choices.
It's about someone in so much pain and so aware of his oncoming death that the only way to cope is to love human beings and give his daughter a life
@@alexdavid3780 there's so much more to it but alright
It broke me because he clinged to that ideal even though it's not true. 😭
@@googelle7555 yeah
Saw it in theaters and we all cried together the entire audience, intense experience
Collective crying sounds healing but also overwhelmingly emotional 😭

This film had me literally consoling my mrs, it was a lot. The part with his ex-wife was heart wrenching. Incredible work of art!
Truly incredible!
"This is long-lasting lipstick." 😂😭🤣
Had to learn the hard way that long lasting did not mean tear lasting 😭🤣
One of the greatest and saddest drama movies, Brendan Fraser did an amazing job. thanks for your honest reaction!
One of the most emotionally brutal endings I have ever seen.
