I'm loving all the questions and discussion. Some quick answers:
    - I didn't directly compare the RG353M to the Retroid Pocket 3 because we don't know the shipping costs yet. I'm considering making a dedicated RP3/RG353M comparison video next week, let me know if you that is of interest to you.
    - I tore the device down this morning to have a look at the PCB, sticks, and speakers, here are the pictures: imgur.com/a/WSXAlky
    - I still love my RG552, to me it's still the ultimate couch retro handheld, the best way to play NES, SNES, Genesis, and GBA. I don't think the RG353M is a good comparison to that device. For me the RG353M fits more into the "carry around town" category thanks to how rugged and compact it is. If anything, it's a contender to replace my Miyoo Mini or RG280V (I think if the RG353M was plastic it would definitely be my primary smallish travel handheld).

Is the ArkOS tutorial here also valid to use on RG353P? Or we need another rk3566-oc.dtb file? I'm curious to try it on my 353P. Thank you for this great review :D

For those confused by anbernics naming scheme for their devices. 28X=2.8in, 35X=3.5in, 50X = 5in 55x=5.5in display. XX0, XX1, XX2, XX3 is the generation. All XX0 devices have the same chipset, same follows for XX1 and XX3. M=metal, V=Vertical, P=Plastic.

My biggest complaint with the 351mp was lack of horsepower, but damn this looks awesome. Adds HDMI and almost full compatibility with 90's systems. I'm definitely getting one of these once Amazon gets them and hopefully AmberElec will be available for it.

Alright, even though the RP3+ technically has a lot more to offer for this price point, I had to order an RG353 just because of how nice it looks and probably feels. The Retroid might be capable of more, but it's such a massive plastic brick compared to this. The idea of carrying this compact, stylish and more than serviceable handheld anywhere is just so dope. My first retro handheld, hoping it's gonna be worth it. Thanks for helping me choose!

I was thinking about selling my RG351MP and upgrading to this one, but after your review I think I'll probably just stick with what I have. The 351MP runs everything I need it to run really well (especially after I put the time in to get 351Elec running), but the real kicker here - for me - is the size. I have fairly big hands, and the 351MP is one of the most comfortable of the retro handhelds due to its size. The things you point out as improvements here w/r/t thinness would actually be a detriment for me.
Thanks, as usual, for the awesome and detailed review.

I upgraded from RG350M and RG351P to RG552 this week and I've already downgraded Android to Black Seraph 9 and using Amberelec on the Linux side. Super impressed with the system overall and playing Genesis games with the amazing screen is really something of beauty and looks so much better in person. Also if you use Android the system supports both sdcard slots for storage with Black Seraph Android 9. Looking forward for continuing to setup this during this weekend.

I have a 351MP that I really love and use all the time. The Amber Elec firmware just makes it a perfect, pocket-friendly on the go device. With almost an identical (actually better) form factor and custom firmware already out there, this would be no brainer of an upgrade if it was just a little more powerful. Although I'd love to upscale the PS1 games to 2X, I'm not sure it's worth the price -unless, as Russ points out, I sell or give away the 351MP. Tough choice!

Another great video Russ. Decided to pick one up. I was really close to pulling the trigger on the 351mp after loving my 351v so much. This device addressed most of the gaps on why I hadn’t, wifi, hall sensor sticks, more comfortable dimensions, and slightly better n64 performance, and it still has that great blue finish. I wish it had workable gamecube, particularly on linux since I don’t like using android on these smaller devices, but c’est la vie. I would still love an updated 280v, that’s still somehow one device I always want to pickup for a few minutes.

I still prefer the RG353P. That SNES controller design is just remarkable!
Plus, I'm not too keen on metal shells. I've had the RG351MP before but found it uncomfortable compared to the hard plastic shells. Except for my RG300X which is a much thinner metal console. So, by that notion perhaps this RG353M is more comfortable to hold than the RG351MP (probably the reason Anbernic chose to make the RG353M slimmer). Anyways I'm skipping this Anbernic, waiting for the RG505.

I really hope this video convinces my partner into a 353M. He has a 350M and refuses to sell it because of the metal shell, but I got him a 353P and he absolutely loves the feel of it as well as finally being able to play Crazy Taxi, his personal holy grail. I'm trying to convince him that this 353M is the best of both worlds, he gets the performance he wants with the feel he wants. The blame is totally on the shoulder buttons... once he tried the stacked shoulder buttons of the 353P he just couldn't go back... his 350M is literally a relic he refuses to get rid of now 😅

Hopefully sometime in 2023, I know there''s quite a few chipsets in android phones now considered old which hopefully will find themselves in a future handheld, I see the future of retro handhelds rocketing to mainstream once gamecube is conquered fully and I'm sure I'm not the only one watching with bated breath for this to happen.

RG353M owner here. This is my first handheld. Device feels nice and solid, performance is good. I like it.
There's one minor issue with d-pad though - it's too easy to accidentally trigger diagonal direction when pressing left or right. It's especially noticeable in 8-bit games like Metroid - when Samus walks sideways, she just randomly aims up. Very annoying.
After some research I found that this could be fixed the same way as Switch Pro Controller D-pad - there's a guide on iFixit, easy to find. Will try this and see if it helps.

Yet another great review, Russ! Was wondering - do you have any recommended shaders for this chipset? I've been tinkering w them on my 353P, but there's so many options and every so often I'll load one up that just slows the menu down to the point of being unusable. It's been rough trying to settle on preferred shaders

I wish they made these with larger 4:3 screen, like a 5" or even slightly larger. You won't know this kid, but as you get older, like past 40, your eyes quickly go to hell, and you start having a hard time focusing on small stuff. I assume no one is making something like a 5.5" 4:3 IPS screen, but I wish someone would and then build one of these systems around it.

I got this and like it a lot. After fiddling with it for a while I decided to use only Android mode.
The only major downside I think the console has is the reset button on the upper right side of the device, which while inlaid, will perform a hard reset with no delay or warning.
I performed a quick and (very) dirty mod to remove it by taking off the back plate and basically crushing the mechanical button with a screwdriver. The outer facing plastic button will stay in place because of a plastic insert but won't function anymore.

I bought the 353m over the 405m about a year ago. I don't think it was a bad purchase because the 353m is so small that I took it everywhere and it has a good amount of power. I'm aiming to keep using it until there is a console that's roughly the same size that can play at least 80% of the PS2 library.

Russ, did you test bluetooth controller on this device on ArkOS? I guess your test in video was on Anbernics original firmware. On ArkOS I simply can't get it work like it should. I turn on bluetooth, pair my DS4 controller and all works fine in emustation, but when I boot any game from any platform, controllers got messed up. It doesn't recognize cursor buttons, hotkey button, I must go into retroarch settings and mapp buttons on controller manually but I must do it every time I boot game. It doesn't stick. When I want to play with external controller, I must set that in retroarch input section on port 1, right?
I would like to work it like this:
    1. I play with onboard controller on handheld
    2. I play with external controller with sending screen on TV with HDMI adapter.
I know it's entirely possible, I just must set buttons in retroarch over and over.
Any help would be much appretiated.
Great channel, by the way. 😊

How is your d-pad? Mine is constantly registering diagonals or down. Fighting games are pretty much impossible unless I never want to do any special moves. Forget shoryukens, I can't even do reliable hadokens.
It's very evident with old arcade games like Pac-Man that only have 4 directions. I'm constantly doubling back or smacking into a wall and not moving when I'm trying to turn corners. It's really bad.
I wanted to love this device but the d-pad makes it completely unplayable. I've seen similar complaints on reddit but it doesn't seem to affect everyone.

I've always been torn on getting a 351MP since it was always my favorite looking device and my favorite color just sort've lacking in power for its price (a shame that it has a less impressive screen) and I have a Samsung note 9 with razer junglecat controllers so it's sort've comfortable and there was no reason to get a "mid range" device until something really great came along.
The RP3 was just too wide for me and I didn't care for streaming to it, so the screen size always seemed not as great to me. I just wanted one that played retro games, around DS and could play PS1 RPGs at x2 or x3 resolution with Bluetooth for Bluetooth headphones for when I'm out and then a smaller device like a horizontal miyoo mini for something easily pocketable and can take around comfortably.
Curious to get my hands on this one, possibly being my first device and see if I even still want a horizontal miyoo mini or if this will be small enough with enough features that I won't really need a different device.
Thanks for the review and breakdown Russ! As always, I love your videos and the vibe and pacing of them!
