Unconventional Students at Rice: Denise Maldonado earns a humanities degree at her dream school

Denise Maldonado, hailing from the southwest side of Chicago, is completing her academic journey with an interest in Latin American and LatinX studies, complemented by a minor in politics, law, social thought, and a certificate in civic leadership. Her aspiration to attend Rice University stemmed from its reputation and the cityscape of Houston, known for its diversity and opportunity that resonated with her identity as a Mexican American and the daughter of immigrants.
At Rice, Maldonado found her academic pursuits enriched by the myriad perspectives and insights spanning across Latin America, which, interwoven with her minor in politics and social thought, afforded her a comprehensive view of the humanities and social sciences. Her involvement with the Center for Civic Leadership further honed her insights, allowing her to apply her academic learnings in practical, leadership-oriented contexts.
Her collegiate journey, however, was not without its hurdles. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during her second semester prompted a gap year, challenging her sense of purpose and direction. Yet, returning to campus reinvigorated Denise with a clearer vision of her goals and the possibilities that lay ahead. Her subsequent years at Rice were marked by exploration and leadership as she engaged with various campus organizations and students, discovering her passions and aligning them with purpose.
Denise's story is a testament to the power of resilience, support, and resourcefulness in navigating the complexities of higher education and personal growth. Her experiences underscore the importance of pursuing one's passions with determination, a lesson that continues to guide her as she moves forward.
