Perspective from an aroace person (sorry in advance for the small novel, I won’t care or be offended if you don’t read): I don’t experience romantic or sexual attraction, so I have never had a romantic or sexual partner. My familial and platonic relationships are super important in my life. I feel like society tends to place romantic relationships on the highest pedestal, then familial, and at a certain point platonic relationships aren’t valued in the same way and fall by the wayside. Obviously not everyone is like this, that’s just my experience/observations. I don’t want or expect my coupled up friends to pretend to not be together when they’re around me - I’m not offended by their romantic relationship. But at the very least I do expect to not be literally ignored by them! It sucks to always be treated as an afterthought and I totally understand Isaac here. I can only assume people giving Isaac shit for his feelings/reactions don’t have strong platonic relationships themselves because how do you think it’s okay to treat your friends this way? Even if you’re not aroace, how uncomfy would it be to be watching a movie with your friends and have them kissing and tickling and flirting with each other six inches from you??? Yikes!
The gripping of Charlie’s upper arm is meant to be an anxious tic that I think is tied to his self-harm, like he’s trying to distract and ground himself with the pressure/pain when he’s overwhelmed. We saw him do something similar in S2, surreptitiously digging his fingers into his arm when Nick first questioned him about his eating habits. I think the reason for the focus on his upper arm becomes a little more apparent later in this season. I was also glad they didn’t make us wait longer to see Charlie asking for help this season, though if you think about it it’s been a long time coming. We’ve seen Charlie struggling with his mental health (skipping meals, isolating himself, engaging in very negative self-talk and even mild suicidal ideation) since S1, and he confessed in the S2 finale that he’d been struggling with self-harm and disordered eating alone for over a year before telling Nick. I think his OCD has probably always been part of his life, it’s just never manifested so dangerously before. In the first half of S3 it escalates to the point that he can’t hide it and carry on without help. We did get some hints at the eating disorder affecting his energy levels in S2 (seeing him faint in Paris, and fall asleep on Nick a couple times), but it’s probably emphasized more now to show us that his condition is getting worse. It’s Heartstopper so they handle it with a light touch, but between that, his relapse into self-harm (some reactors seem to miss it, but that’s the “accident” he tells Nick about over the phone), and him just looking sicklier, I think we’re meant to understand that Charlie’s health declined to the point that inpatient treatment at the clinic became advisable to avoid hospitalization. Episode 4 isn’t the end of Charlie’s mental health journey in this season, but the latter half of the season is definitely lighter than the first, so hopefully fewer tears! :)
Yes, they use the word compulsions to mean Charlie's self-harm and disordered eating, and also relapse at times. Not sure too many viewers catch the meaning

I think the way Isaac expresses himself is interesting. Because he has been quite quiet on the first part of the show and has slowly started opening up and speaking. When he does so he is quite direct and forthright. Like how he spoke to Harry in Season 2. Or how he told Tao that Nick and Charlie were in their honeymoon phase in season 1. He doesn’t speak much but is a clear and honesr communicator. Contrast that with Charlie who has lied about his mental health, about his course work (to Nick) and about being fine to everyone so as not to become a burden and make everyone treat him differently. They are all going through growing up and learning how to communicate effectively and express themselves aa individuals. So I respect that Isaac is who he is (as is Tao) and their friends understand them and their communication styles, calling each other out when this starts to cause a problem. Now, I will admit that being honest with Charlie about feeling angry at him whilst he's going through treatment, was not a good choice in that video. I think it landed ok becaise Charlie was getting better. But Isaac didn’t know that and this video is for Charlie whilst he's in hospital.
Love your reactions! I do sometimes need to remind myself that these characters like Isaac are 15 years old, so I feel his reactions are very realistic. I do love how he recovers after expressing his frustration that he knows it is not Charlie's fault. I think this is very common, to express anger towards a person when it is frustration with a situation that we couldn't control.
2:40 Naomi’s accent is something else, isn’t it? I love the diversity of British accents but some of them do grate just a bit on the American ear. 😝 Thanks for making these videos. Your Heartstopper reactions are my favorites. They do make a point that it’s a private clinic. If they’d gone thru the NHS he’d still be waiting. They don’t really dwell on it but many of the families in the show seem to be quite well off financially. Not rich-rich (except for Harry), but definitely able to own a nice big house, spend three weeks vacationing in Menorca, and buy their son a car for his birthday rich.
I was in a facility for a couple weeks for something. My teachers and parents coordinated to bring me things, and to take them over to the school between visits. Not necesarrily 'assignments' but materials and worksheets so i could keep up when i returned to school. I hated dealing with that, but it gave me a little sense of normalcy.

The first half of the season is rough. You might need a pallet cleanser like Terrifier 2 or Schindler's List. I wouldn't say the next four episodes aren't also emotionally tough, but they're a different kind of tough.
I'm going to be Isaac's defender, because yes, he was a bit wrong, but I've got things to say (feel free to ignore lol) Let's not forget that he's a kid, they are all kids, so yes, it wasn't right to burst in the middle of Nick's birthday, but it was bound to happen I also don't think he wants his coupled friends to just act like they're not in a couple around him, I think he just would prefer not to be ignore (if we compare for example, any scene with Nick and Charlie and him from the previous seasons, and Tao and Elle, the latter couple where basically ignoring him most of the time, and the former couple at least acknowledging his presence) Also, I think what he did in the video was (lowkey) healthy. He didn't put the blame on Charlie. He stated facts (Charlie didn't tell him the truth) and talked about his feelings (that made him 'mad') -I think he probably meant more upset, but wtv- then he also ended it with a feel statement (hoping in the future that Charlie will feel safe enough to freely talk to him) As for the beginning of the season, when Isaac didn't want to explain what aromanticism is, we have to understand that aromanticism and asexuality is not as widely talked as homosexuality or homoromanticism. He probably doesn't want to have to repeat himself one thousand times just to explain what it is and then answer all of the million questions that people might have. Yes, Charlie isn't just "people", he's Isaac's friend but he has so many friends too. Personally, if I knew I'd have to explain my sexuality or my romanticism more than twice, I'd get annoyed
I fully understand that repeating the same thing over and over would get annoying, but to your point if it is something that is not widely known, then unfortunately frustration is going to go hand-in-hand with having to educate people until it becomes more common knowledge. At least imo!
