I think a reason that Alice is so calm and accepting of what's happening is that it's in her head. She's in a world that seems to make sense to her, despite none of it making sense at all. Some things make sense to an insane person but, not to a person who is sane. A sane person would not be calm or accepting of the odd things happening (floating, upside-down mirrors, landing almost on one's head while chasing after a rabbit in a waistcoat, chasing after said rabbit with a smile) I believe the characters are a creation from Alice's imagination; an insane person creating insane characters.

I've floated UP a hole, a glass tube until I could no further but I wanted to. I saw pure light and I had to go back down but before I could, I heard "just do your best, son" and I went back down and I woke up. It was pretty awesome. Outta Body Experiences are fun. Scary sometimes though.

You have to remember that right before this, Alice wanted a world where everything was nonsense. What something would be, it wouldn't; and whatever it wouldn't be, it would. In real life, her dress would never pass for a parachute, but in her world (which springs to life once she touches the water) the dress becomes a parachute, because that would be nonsense, which is exactly what she wanted.

It's my favorite Disney movie of all time, and both of the family cats have an Alice In Wonderland connection. My husband named our boy 'Mimsy' (after the portmanteau in the Jabberwocky poem), and I named our girl Dinah. Sometimes (because cat owners are dorky) I'll mimic Alice and say, "Oh, Dinah." when she's doing something silly, or begin an announcement with, "You know, Dinah..." And I wish Alice's kitten had gotten more marketing in the way of art prints or ceramic figurines or something.
