She was raised in Pennsylvania by her Irish American mother, and her American Stepdad. She has little to do with her Ecuadorian father, who was abusive to her and her mother.

There is a difference between understanding language you hear at home, and understanding language required for a professional interview. What she lacks is practice. You can tell from the way she pronounces her words in Spanish (from her songs, and 'greeting' clips) that she understands what to do, but lacks experience and finesse.
Correct Spanish is my first language English is my second Italian is my third language I can only hear it understand but I lack of context to be fluent yet
Guys! Also for me as a spanish speaker is difficult to understand mexicans because they talk with a strong accent , and her father is ecuadorian, they don’t have that much of an accent! Let’s give her a chance for that
I know how she feels. I grew up with my English-speaking mother. My French-speaking father wasn't around much and spoke to me in English when we did see each other. I would visit for Christmas or in the summer and had no idea what my grandmother and my dad were saying to each other. Despite growing up in a French-speaking province and taking French classes at school, the language just didn't stick to me until I was around 17. That's when I made my own effort to reconnect with my roots and made French-speaking friends. I kept at it, studied the dictionary with a finger-stab a day (where I opened to a random page and pointed at a random word and had to use that word at some point in the day). Having French-speaking friends REALLY helped to get the street vocabulary and the local expressions. 25 years later, I'm fluent and most native French-speakers don't know that French isn't my first language when I speak to them in casual and professional settings. It just goes to show that you can get it if you put your mind to it. That being said, Christina's Spanish is MUCH better today. You can hear it in her more recent music. She has been practicing over the years.
she's very professional it was hard to follow the interview for her i think lol she's the best! and it's not a shame to do not learn or talk spanish she didn't live with her father in any way

She couldn't get her ear piece in her hair to hear the lady translate in English so that's why she kept saying hello so that the lady would speak through the speaker, I believe Christina understood some of what the presenter was saying and was able to respond in English but when an equipment malfunctions or an artist is struggling to put their ear piece in an assistant needs to be ready to help..But she got through this interview well enough :)

Selena’s dad taught Selena the importance of knowing Spanish. Especially when you have a Spanish surname. I think she could have been the next Selena. She has the vocal tone and the growl that Selena so loved to use. But unfortunately here the lack of Spanish makes her a gringa. And you don’t have to be blond to get that title. I have cousins who look Hispanic and when they go to Mexico they don’t speak a word of Spanish because it’s not cool. At home even if both parents speak Spanish all answers are in English. Which clearly means they understand what’s being said but refuse to practice. I don’t know if she never heard it at home, doesn’t like to speak it, or is uncomfortable with it. I just think she could have been the next Selena.
Mendez S her father was from Ecuador her mother was not. Her father may not have been in her life all that much to teach her. he was in the military and her parents divorced when she was young as well. I'm not sure why he never taught her though
She was raised by her irish american mother and her stepdad who is american, she didn't grow up speaking spanish, her father left when she was little, why would she want to be the next Selena when she is a star of her own, by her own name, she is Christina Aguilera, she's a star already.
Selena didn't know Spanish until she was an adult. She did not know Spanish when she was younger. She learned it as she was older. Get your facts straight! She did not speak it growing up.

It's "Jonas".. They're not singing in Japanese all the time as Japanese..anymore than Celine Dion claimed to be American. Also, Aguilera's claim is to be Spanish (which she is)- then she sang a whole album in Spanish and endeared the Spanish people to her, when in fact, she doesn't speak the language even though she claimed to be studying it. The Jonas brothers had other reasons for singing in Japanese (they are loved in Japan and it was a gift).. and they've never claimed Japanese heritage.

Another good point. She may speak Spanish better than most but she may have a thick accent or may simply not be able to communicate as well.
