    I have found it is better to spread the coals out a little before the flames get to the top and all of them are bright red. The coals will light more evenly, and the ones at the top that don't get red in the chimney will ash over within a couple minutes of spreading them usually, and the coals will last a good bit longer.

      bert H I don't know if this is safe but I was using an electric coal starter element inside on top of opening in the charcoals, made sure the handle was outside and it got the coals going pretty quick. Again this may not be real safe, more or less an experiment on my part.

    • @SooperFlye
      @SooperFlye 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Only1Truth Electric Charcoal Starters are indeed safe. UL listed.
      Now of course, electric starters require basic common sense. Like finishing off a pint of Jim Beam & falling asleep while the starter sits burning, thus, causing a 4 alarm fire. If you get my drift!

  • @eminusipi

    I'm curious if you noticed different results with different newspaper sheets. Usually I'd use three full sheets and it would take about 20 min 'til ready. Sometimes the paper didn't work as well. I'm thinking that highly color inked paper didn't work as well as plain black type sheets. I'm prefering the Weber lighter cubes-one seems to work very well and there is no ash flying all over and they are relatively cheap and 100% reliable.

  • @Wskyinaglass
    @Wskyinaglass 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video. I was almost certain I was going to get a propane grill. Mostly cause propane grills heat up faster and you have to constantly attend to the charcoal when trying to get it hot. Thoufh, to me charcoal grills give out better taste. Until I saw this device. I'm just about sold on getting a charcoal grill.

    • @chriscook5613
      @chriscook5613 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Propane does heat up faster. It aldo dries out your food quicker, and over time is more costly to operate having to replace burners ect.

    I've been using one of these, for years.
    They are the best. I roll two pieces of newspaper, ring them around the bottom leaving a little air hole in the middle, and light it.
    By the time you prep the food, the coals are ready to dump into the Weber.
    A word of advice ... don't use briquettes. Use lump charcoal. It's a more natural charcoal process.

    Weber chimeny starter is the best. Great design. It should only take about 10 to 15 min in the start then drop them in the grate and spread them out. By the time you put the grates back on and start cooking the coals will be perfect. Kingsford directions on the back day once the coals are 70% white you should start cooking....Works every time!

    I was hoping to see whether that wire handle that is supposed to aid in pouring by using two hands really does anything. Weber has a slightly smaller version without the wire. You don't show the pour in the video so my question is unanswered.. As for spark lighters, I get the ones from Dollar Tree. No better or worse than the more expensive ones but only a buck.

    • @PerlAddict
      @PerlAddict  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't think so, unless you fit a longer burning fuel source underneath it instead of paper. Then? Maybe. But there's not a lot of space under there. The point of the charcoal chimney is that the original source of heat (the paper) burns out fairly quickly, but lights the lowest-most charcoal. From there, that charcoal keeps generating heat which lights more of the charcoal, and so on and so forth until they're all hot.
      The difference with stones is, they don't continue to emit greater heat once the original source that heated them up is gone. Charcoal is a fuel source in and of itself - stones simply absorb heat provided to them and then radiate that heat back out until they are cool again. Hope that helps!
