    In the above example is the inbreeding coefficient 7/16 (about 44%)? If not can you show how to calculate the inbreeding coefficient? I have watched your videos of calculating inbreeding coefficients, do you have one that shows how to calculate the inbreeding coefficient when individuals in the pedigree are also inbred?

      I have such videos - just search my channel for "inbreeding".

  • @HiQDogs

    In this example you said that dog 4 would be 75% homozygous. Would that not ONLY be true if DOG 2 is fully homozygous. As the 75% only represents the percentage of genetic material transferred from DOG 2. If DOG 2 is heterozygous and DOG 4 is 75% related it would not necessarily be 75% homozygous. Similarly the 25% from the other parent does not represent heterozygous percentage unless DOG 1 is also completely homozygous for different alleles than DOG 2.

      In order to do exact calculations we need to know genetic relationship between the dogs and initial coefficient of inbreeding. This was just example that with each round of inbreeding loss of heterozygosity would be 50% .

    Hello, I'm in a situation where (even as a breeder I know these basics) I have now bought 3 female dogs of great importance in a specific breed ( basically closest to the source, time of breed creation ) but due to that I one of them even have unknown (no data) dogs or even cross breed dogs from before it even became a breed close as 4. 5. generation back... But one of them is a direct daughter of the oldest dog of the one of the first bloodlines that's still alive on the planet... And I have frozen semen of that dog, but only for one time use. Now, I have access to her sibling brother for breeding also, and because their mother is the best bitch from serious kennel who breeds for working, health, performance...etc that mother side of pedigree have hips elbows eyes..etc checked and info about that many generations back... But the old blood dog has an immense amount of courage, defense and fight drives ( new blood (mother side is protection work competition dogs but it's based on prey drive) now I would like to inbred and create a bloodline of HD-A hips and etc .. but with mindset and inborn instincts of old time tuff dogs that lived hard life in hard times serving to humans risking their lives for real not just playing on competitions.... So, because these females and that sperm are priceless. I will need to hire someone with a degree and book knowledge in genetics to guide me through this process... Are you interested in something like this and if so, please just give me a personal email to show you the details and online pedigree data base

      So you want to breed for appearance or for fight and protection (behavior) traits?

    • @hardcoredogs
      @hardcoredogs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GeneticsLessons "behavior"
      No.1 most important is the mindset, the will. there is no use in dog being able to do something if he don't want to.
      No.2 Health
      No.3 Comes the body (don't know if that is what you consider by "appearance") they do need to be heavy enough for man stopping, yet not short, heavy boned, wide chest and wide short muzzle head (impressive bodybuilder appearance). But longer legs, deeper chest, thinner but longer neck, lighter head with longer muzzle...etc ( that means, faster running, deep chest more lung capacity, longer neck is like longer arms in boxing-reach, better breathing when holding the bite with longer muzzle) higher ass than shoulders, tail starting lower the better, back legs proportion of lower and upper bone (sorry English is not my first language) how much opened angles of back legs, paws longer or shorter fingers... That's all appearance but for purpose of practical and performance benefits...
      If you meant by "appearance" on will dog be black or white, blue or yellow eyes... That I don't care about 😁
      Is it better to have a dog that is not able to protect you, a chihuahua for example, but wants so much that he dies trying.. German shepherd who is strong and able, but because he is hungry, tired, wounded... Now he wants to eat, pain to stop hurting him and to go sleep, so he stops fighting and simply just quit
      Or huge, scary looking, fearless mastiff 150 pounds of muscle laying on your porch but have hip dysplasia so can't get up

      @@GeneticsLessons just type in TH-cam search "pitbul dog' you'll see the new blood based on appearance only, then type 'pitbul grand champions of history' and you'll see ugly, skinny but immensely athletic healthy dogs with personality of battle heroes warriors..
      Mine breed is perro de presa canario... But same thing happening (cross breeding with mastiffs to get larger more intimidating looking dogs, but calming temper so pups can be sold to inexperienced people and kids... All because of the damn money

    • @GeneticsLessons
      @GeneticsLessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all, inbreeding is not a goal (it can be a goal in lab rats though) . Pure line when phenotypic traits are stable in a progeny. Inbreeding is a bad thing due to "inbreeding depression" and if possible you should avoid it.

    • @GeneticsLessons
      @GeneticsLessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let say by chance you got a dog with blue fur- none of the puppets of this dog have this trait (cause it is recessive and all puppet are heterozygous) - you need to cross this dog to all the progeny of the opposite sex (aaxAa) - and 1/2 of the progeny will have this trait as homozygous recessive (aa) - you got pure line for this trait only after one cross.

    • @GeneticsLessons
      @GeneticsLessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Meaning if you will cross dogs with blue fur with blue fur = 100% of the progeny of such a cross will have blue fur. It is a pure line for this trait.

    • @GeneticsLessons
      @GeneticsLessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can not inbreed for long - dogs are not mice - and you will see inbreeding depression in them.
      Dogs would be sick and will have many genetic problems. Next step would be to cross with another inbred line to increase heterozygosity - and health.

      But these 2 examples are the simplest and need only 2-3 inbreeding crosses to fix the trait. In most cases traits are under the control of many genes - in those cases more inbreeding crosses needed to fix many genes (loci). Could be 3-4-5-6-7 close relative crosses.

    • @GeneticsLessons
      @GeneticsLessons  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a purebred strain or breed, the goal is that the organism will "breed true" for the breed-relevant traits. The sooner you get such characteristics the better, no need to inbreed more - this may cause inbreeding depression.

    you need to review genetics, your talking on bloodcoeficient, genes always pass 50% to its offspring and in the law of independent segregation offsprings of the same litter possess different genes depends on the genotype of their parent. imposible to have 75%genes
