Super Awesome job again! The part of the pic of your car and the filming location at Universal's tram garage means it was meant to be! 🤘 I like to think they replaced the actual screen in KITT with the gray screen to keep the reflection of the lighting from showing up on screen while filming lol. ;)
The working monitor. Reminds me of the first time I made a Skype call from the laptop in my car while parked near a public WiFi. I had recalled this moment in Knight Rider. Real life catches up with fiction. Too bad they didn't get to use it more. Makes stuff like this more realistic. Must've been interesting for David to film that scene too.
Rich in The White Wire, your perfect knowledge about all the Kitts used here and many interesting details - thanks. And this is one of my most favourite episodes.
I remember them showing the working TV when Devon and Michael were talking and always thought that was cool and worth the extra effort. Might be a neat ep to cover the times the 2 TV dash worked on screen. I only remember a few times they were on, and maybe only 1 where they had a video feed going ?? Glad to see the long awaited return of the mighty white wire! :)
25:34 This close up shot also shows a little continuity goof as Michael's wearing gloves when escaping with the canister, but clearly isn't when pressing that power button.
Your putting out a lot of great videos lately! I loved this one. I had no idea that there was ever a working TV in the dash! So cool to learn after all these years
Thank you, Joe! Very exciting! I think "Knight in disgrace" is one of the best KR episodes. Funny that in season 3 of Miami Vice there is a similar storyline with Tubbs becoming "bad" cop.
Great episode Joe & AJ!! It would've been nice if you mentioned the actresses that played in this episode!! Maybe had an interview with her, and talk to the individual who played the little girl!! The spoof with the Alligator as well!!
I know it's been explained a lot...but maybe think about doing a refresher video regarding why the white wire is such a big deal. Sometimes I find myself forgetting.
Great Job again Gentlemen! Three things from this episode that come to mind as well as others. Is that K.I.T.T's voice has a different tone and clarity unlike all the other episodes as Lisa Sargent Mentioned in the comments. Second, the look David give Edward when they meet in that freezer with the canister is a genuine smile David gives Edward. Third, that guy in the golf cart is the same guy who blocks K.I.T.T in at the party held at the house in the episode Forget me not. He played the valet guy who Michael doesn't want to drive K.I.T.T. Also the speed ok K.I.T.T vs the speed of the golf cart is too funny to watch. Thank you again for these great videos!
That's definitely the Nortel Displayphone, which went on sale in 1982. You can tell from the photo at 9:50 that it's not plugged in, so it would not be working in that shot. It does have both Line 1 and Line 2 connected though. Just no power supply for the unit. The power cord would connect to the rightmost (from our view) part of the black slot on the back of the monitor part of the phone, but there's obviously nothing there.
the keypad on that 'drone' cabinet thing looks like the keypad on the controllers for my Collecovision games console I had back in the early to mid 80-s (still have it today)
Great episode and commentary. Fun fact for you. The opening scene of the episode at the restaurant was in fact filmed Sherman Oaks, and was practically walking distance from Edward Mulhare’s home. Also, Barrone’s is or probably was a really good Italian restaurant. I can’t remember if they closed down during COVID or not.
Loved the moment where Michael and Devon hug, showing how much their relationship and trust evolved, in S4E9 "Knight Racer" we see a Kim Wilde music video played on the monitor of what must've been the insert dash (must've paid a pretty penny for that one), plus actress Kitty Moffat aka Katherine Moffat, later played an alien woman who tried to brainwash the crew of the Enterprise-D with a video game.
A great Episode. David even made his hairstyle similar to Garth Knight. They did great work. They were really trying to improve KITT's interaction. Unfortunately, as you said, this was the 80s and it wasn't possible for this kind of equipment to last long. The white wire, once again as usual. Then we see it a second time. That scene they made (which is also part of Season 3 Intro) with KITT is really cool. Well, in that scene, we clearly see (now, of course) a stock dash from the ten-A-pillar car. It was a left-hand blind-drive car when it was K.A.R.R., but here there was only this person driving it on the right side. Thanks for the video.
You certainly had the technology in 1984 to make that TV work, if in B&W, we had a small portable TV with maybe a 4 or 5 inch screen that ran off nine D batteries. It was handy when there was a power outage. The issue with it would be weight, though, those little things are still fairly heavy and would put a lot of stress on the dash, or need a bunch of brackets to hold them up.
great video love it!, just a fun fact... the little vw (min 14:04), was a screen used herbie the love bug car from the 1997 tv movie. i dont know if you knew this, but is a cool easter egg.
I've always liked this episode. I remember watching - and taping - it the night it was aired. I think I still have it, along with the teaser trailer(s) on Betamax somewhere. Looking forward to "Lost Knight". Another favorite. 🙂
I can confirm that one of the KITT cars did have a working TV with an analog tv tuner in it, I think i was 6 or 7 years old and there was a car show in New Haven, CT at the "New Haven Coliseum" (which no longer exists). They had all the tv show cars at of that time.... ATEAM Van, KITT, Dukes of hazards car etc etc... I was able to take a photo with KITT in the driver seat (I've lost the photo over the years 😢). And i vividly remember the TV in the car had a local football game playing when they took the photo. I was so afraid that KITT was going to take off with me in it hahahaha.
A better than average episode.I remember watching this one on NBC when it first aired.I noticed that the TV in the car was actually there and not the usual overlapping of film to simulate it working. My mom and dad were watching with me and when Michael shot Devon their reaction was " he's leaving the show"? but not any comment on Michael being way out of character and shooting him! Thanks Joe and A.J.for another well done commentary. Honestly your info makes the episodes even more fun to watch as the info is adding to the viewing experience👍👍
Stock footage is a cost-saving technique however it gets easy to tell you are looking at recycled scenes pretty quick especially if the same footage is used in multiple episodes. I don't know what the typical budget for an episode of Knight Rider was however it seems it was not much compared to what a modern television series like the Walking Dead is getting. I wonder what Knight Rider episodes would have looked like if they had today's per episode funding.
I have wondered a long time if the original idea of the later dashboard and pods was, that they had infact a touch buttons. And the crew missed the idea and just pushed the buttons in the middle of pods. Because the user interface of the pods is quite strange, there is two functions in each row but only one push button?
Great commentary again and the episode itself was good too. Michael Knight seemingly becoming a bad guy, and KITT's monitor working for real + all the dash electronics, etc. I remember watching this episode as a kid in disbelief, how could Michael Knight ever become bad guy and especially point a gun at Devon, but what an relief, when everything was solved :)
I would imagine that they used a video signal generator of some sort to display the map or whatever the source was. That is a studio production video monitor with BNG inputs for the video source.
I know this is an older video, but I had to make a comment. When I was a little kid, I saw KITT at the Autorama in Houston. Somewhere in my parent's attic, I think there is a polaroid of me sitting in it. I don't know if the hero car made appearances in the off season or if it was a replica, but it definitely had a working tv in it.
Brilliant again ,Joe,I really like this episode, so first..the dash looked great, all worked and the TV worked too...always thought the Hero dash looked cleaner than the insert dash just because the used coloured gels on the insert dash...as you said it's a prop and things get worn and broken, that's evident in the next produced episode The Ice Bandits,as you pointed out that at the chase scene at the end the pod in the Hero car had already fallen apart and the pod lights flickered in KOTD..also KITT voice was so deep in this episode,we're used to hear the tinny sound of his voice but there's much more base in this one??...and as a sidebar..Charlie Percini was the stunt coordinator on Die Hard..we all know the ending when Hans falls from the window..well as most of you know,Alan Rickman was dropped around 20 feet onto an air bag for that shot and he was told they would drop him on a count of 3,it was Charlie that told the stunt crew to drop him on 2 hence the real fear on his face....thanks again Joe,looking forward to next time
This is one of my favorite episodes, it was interesting and I learned something new. That none of the cars had grown effects package. So that makes me for sure not install those on my KITT. lol. Also, Joe if you are interested I have a person's info that you might be interested to talk to. Message me and I'll share his contact info with you. He might provide more info about our beloved show Knight Rider. Have a safe day. Good Knight ;-) #FotoRider
This is probably one of the top 5 TV cars pretty much everyone in GenX wanted and still wants especially if you narrow it down to actual street legal driving cars.
Hi Joe, this episode really brings back memories. I remember watching this episode when it was new and thinking “KITT’s monitor really works!” I do remember seeing the infamous “white wire” and thinking about it over the years, from many episodes. I do believe it was a microphone wire for David in my opinion or a power harness for the overhead console. But I lean heavy towards the microphone theory. But why didn’t they use a black wire to hide itself? Simple. I think they used a white wire so the production crew could glance through the windshield and make sure The Hoff’s microphone was in place. Time is money in Hollywood. If a production crew can save a few steps to save some time, they will do it. As long as it doesn’t Jeopardize anyone’s safety. I was fortunate to work at Warner Brothers Studios years back right after 9/11 part time doing security making extra $$, I learned a little about how tv shows are made by some really nice people. Brilliant stuff.
I figured it out, it's all connected and Jack Gill drove the car from the back of the car so whenever jack turned the wheel or etc. The specific part moved. I think that's it
@@jessihawkins9116 Jack Gill drove the car from the backseat. There was a steering wheel he used and you can see this documented on the Knight Rider historians channel. I just can't remember the exact name of the stuntcar. They used plenty of stunt cars in many ways when jack drove from the back everything was connected so when he hit the gas or turned the wheel we saw them move.
the hoff always(well not always but most of the time) looked to the tv screen on the dash when talking to kitt or when having a dialog...in that seccen with the insert car that we can se the center console is one of that moments... was there any voice maybe coming from there that was replicting wiliam daniels script??
With reference to the Video phone, I have seen a very similar phone in 1980s Sci fi films. It could be a Northern Telecom display phone but I'm not sure of the model.
The first 6 minutes of the video, what is reflected in the passenger side mirror? See 05:21 for instance. Camera equipment? The mirror is not turned down like it is a bit later in the close up shot with Devon on the TV.
Has anyone noticed that KITT's voice is different in this episode? When I first heard it as a child, I thought it was a different KITT, but I think William Daniels was possibly voicing over so many episodes at that point that he forgot where he was.
Is it something you notice moving forward in the series too, or just for this episode? It’s possible that for some reason the usual studio was in use and they had William go into another room or do the lines at another studio (was he out of town doing it from NY or something? haha). But different studios or a different mic setup could change his voice.
@@danmurphy9173 It was also noticeable in the pilot and some of the first season episodes like Not A Drop To Drink where KITT/William Daniels sounds like he has been told to tone his voice down a little. Then it's the usual KITT voice until this episode in season 3.
Kinda funny how you point out some of the computer equipment. The old series V from the early 80s. Knight rider had used this device in an episode. The device is also seen as the self-destruck device of one of the motherships in V. It is the device the star child grabs ahold of with both her hands on the keys. There are two devices in that scene in V that are seen again in knight rider. The self-destruck device and the device they try to use to stop the self-destruck sequence. Just not sure what episodes they are in. Actually its funny cause the self-destruck device in V is also used as a self-destruck device in knight rider.
Is there any information or current pictures from the Season 3-4 Hero Car? I'm currently building a 1:8 scale model and I'm missing some information. Maybe there will be a video too. That would make me happy. Your videos help me a lot. Thanks for that🙏🏻
Joe has mentioned several times that the S1 General purpose stunt KITT didn’t survive production, but has never explained exactly what happened to it? A deep dive or just a quick “It was really beat up, so they jumped it!” 🤣 would be awesome!
Where you mentioned the white wire it seems to me that there's no front windshield . some movie producers usually have them removed for a clearer shot. am just curious if they did it in this scene ?
Maybe Devon's videophone is just a central phone and on top of it, they added that monitor cover. Edit: There seems to be a small "keyboard" in front of the monitor, so maybe it is a legit device. In real use the screen may have shown the office's line status or incoming call information etc.
It's a Northern Telephone (Nortel) Displayphone from 1982, I believe. It's basically a data terminal with a built in 300 baud modem and telephone. There is no camera or videoconferencing capability in this device.
Does anyone ever notice Michael's mannerisms. When he gets mad he points his hand a certain way. He does it when he tells Devon I don't work for the Foundation anymore. He points like that in a few episodes. Hoff new how to command scenes. He does it in Dead of Knight too
I always wondered if the power button worked like that meaning if it was a push button but now im wondering how does it switch between normal auto & pursuit if its not a button?
I have a video chat phone that I picked up at an auction one time. New in box. I think the company's name was Huwaii or something close to that. I'll look around and see if it's the same or not
Love that part where Devon is really on the screen and not some weird recording did not like the part where the bad guy took over kitts voice transmission like that
13:20 I really love to know more about these computer suitcases! Are there similar ones out there on sale today? I will do some research on this and see if there is.
Pete Thornton also had one in the MacGyver Episode "The invisible killer". When Pete tried to call for help with this briefcase phone, the killer blew it up remotely.
Useless piece of trivia, the Sunday after this episode, 25th November 1984, was the date Bob Geldof and Co recorded a certain famous charity Christmas song.

Brilliant stuff.
One of my favourite season 3 episodes. Wish they did a real Turbo Boost though.
Charlie was also the stunt guy for Starsky on Starsky an Hutch
Knight in Disgrace and Dead of Knight were the best episodes in season 3 in my opinion. Meaty storylines.
I've got the boxset of knightrider!! All four seasons!! 😉👍
Awsome episode guys!
That was super fun!
awesome video thank you
My recent behavior is history, we have a whole life ahead of us. Haha, best line ever. Always used it in school, when I got sent to the principal.
Nice, another great one!😎
Great video, I'd like to know or see how the crew made the wheel, gearshift and etc. move on its own, just a idea
Pretty sure that's where he taped his dialogue pages ;)
Time to sit back, relax and watch TV inside of KITT!
Hopefully he won't judge me of what I watch
Don't forget it's a KITT from radio shack 😁
2:42 I can't hear what you are saying because the sheer thickness of The Hoff's hair has deafened me
With reference to the Video phone, I have seen a very similar phone in 1980s Sci fi films. It could be a Northern Telecom display phone but I'm not sure of the model.
I found the link above for comparison.
Yes i found it on daves old computers website
This was probably the first time the immersion of KITT fully worked. You felt this car was legit, all working and indestructible. KITT felt ALIVE
This briefcase prop is also used in some MacGyver episodes.
I could have sworn it showed up in the weekly "V" series as well.
Yes! me too.
Another cool episode Joe . Is there going to be more scenes with the white wire Joe . I hope so and it is cool when you point them out as well .
Where is the camera in KITT for Devon to be able to see Micheal?
I used to think that it was behind KITT's voice box. You know today where you can overlay a webcam over text etc.
It was outside resting on the hood near the other Panaflex camera, a bunch of stage lights, and the entire 1st unit sitting on the camera car. 😜
The self destruct device is in "Sky High"
check out goliath part one at 28 mins 25 seconds to the left and behind april's left arm while her and devon are in the jet .
Are you going to track down and buy the FLAG limo to add to the fleet?
This is the exact episode that i had in mind when i asked you about working features on the dash! hahaha thanks!
Kitty Moffat guest starred on the A-Team season 1 episode The rabbit who ate Las Vegas
Awesome! 👍🏻
I would want a working TV in the car. Though I would want a blend. Maybe fourth season style except dual monitors.
Our Patreon community has an exclusive, never before seen photo of this very car RIGHT BEFORE it went to the crusher! ;)
Where you mentioned the white wire
it seems to me that there's no front windshield . some movie producers usually have them removed for a clearer shot. am just curious if they did it in this scene ?
I set and kit in Dallas Texas when I was a four-year-old
The next episode *Dead of Knight* also features David Hasselhoff's sister Jean Hasselhoff.
9:50 This Videophone is a Northern Telecom NT displayphone
Always wondered how wherever Michael is in the country FLAG headquarters is only a short drive away.
He does it in Dead of Knight too
The one that gets me is when he opens locked doors, hold his hand or fist up. He does it every time
I always thought this could have been a special two-part episode, but a good episode nonetheless.
I wanna know more about this computer suitcase. 13:04 Is there a similar type of computer suitcase still out there on sale today?
There needs to be a 'White Wire' T-Shirt.
Charlies name was Donner in White Bird.
Devon's tie is a Badminton Logo
I always wondered if the power button worked like that meaning if it was a push button but now im wondering how does it switch between normal auto & pursuit if its not a button?
I have a video chat phone that I picked up at an auction one time. New in box. I think the company's name was Huwaii or something close to that. I'll look around and see if it's the same or not
Love that part where Devon is really on the screen and not some weird recording did not like the part where the bad guy took over kitts voice transmission like that
At 11:50 you can notice that the TV screen is fake a slight wrinkle on it...
@@stolmich Aw, yes. Thank you! I totally forgot about that. Is there a similar one on sale today?
Useless piece of trivia, the Sunday after this episode, 25th November 1984, was the date Bob Geldof and Co recorded a certain famous charity Christmas song.
