    Another awesome interview! You have chosen so wisely, experts from different perspectives on the same issue! So much great information here, and a message of hope and positivity. That's a relief from so much doom and gloom. Canada is so smart - sure seems like they're all working together to find the best ways to manage natural resources. Thanks Canada! Thanks interviewees! Thanks Ashley!

    Loved this episode!👍👍👍 I’ve been saying to people for years that Canadian peat is NOT the same thing as European peat. Our industry is a completely different industry and it’s done under a kind of environmental scrutiny that I dare say NO OTHER country in the world operates under. Coir seems like a great idea. I love it. It’s great. It also has a super sketchy child labour component,not to mention shipping it from literally half way around the world. Not as “green” as people want to believe. Nor is it a very good for growing stuff as far as I’m concerned!

    I like adding my potted veggies into the ground because im adding lots of peat that way
    To build my soil for next year
    Me and my mom usually take free plants home even if they are dead because of the peat lol

    On the subject of soil ,I tried some new poting mix , anyway planted my plants in the soil and the plants didn't look healthy slow growth, and then after 3 weeks started wilting and going yellow, anyway I worked out it was iron proplem, so sprayed them with chelated irons and in 5 hours thay were pretty much green again and looking healthy, so maybe the ph is out causeing a lockout, anyway just thought I would share

    It makes me chuckle that many companies seem to be taking on 60’s inspired retro 80’s flavored names, like Premier Tech and Ingredion. Having lived trough most of the 60’s myself, as well as the 70’s and 80’s obviously, they just sound so silly and dated. The Jetsons come to mind.

    What effect are the synthetic material weed clothes having on soil? Are there any studies on this? They remind me of recycled tires which are known to leech carcinogens into soil over time.

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only studies I have seen are on the soil temp effects but nothing to date when it comes to chemical leaching. I am confident it is leaching because everything has an effect.

    • @tagladyify
      @tagladyify 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GardeningInCanada that has been my opinion for some time. It is so tempting to do to keep the weeds in check, but not worth it if the soil becomes toxic. That kind of defeats the whole purpose of growing our own food.

    • @bounjamin
      @bounjamin ปีที่แล้ว

      Best just to use a 3-4 inch deep layer of wood mulch for weed suppression

  • @tagladyify
    @tagladyify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If we think about how peat was actually formed, by the decay of vegetation, we can recreate that scenario on a small scale in our own gardens, regularly. One way is to chop and drop and another is to leave weeds where they lay after weeding a bed, as long as they haven’t gone to seed, to return what they have taken from the soil.

    I think a lot of the reason some people are triggered by the use of peat is they may be european where they have been using and harvesting peat for thousands of years and they may have a real problem with disappearing peat lands. Just a theory.

    • @GardeningInCanada

      110% there is a definite disconnect between Canadian and European Operations

      The world has a problem with disappearing and mismanaged peatlands. They store 25% of the world's carbon. Twice as much as the worlds forests. We need to stop digging it up.

    Hello, many scientists and gardening professionals in Europe have explained that peat moss is not necessary in the garden, and that it can easily be replaced. So I think what is true in Europe is also true in Canada... I think that if a gardener uses peat moss today, it is because he does not know that there are alternatives.

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Peat in Europe is a different quality because its not the top layer its from deeper in the bog. He does mention the alternatives promix has looked at such a coconut coir and future fibre technology.

    • @easyasorganics
      @easyasorganics 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GardeningInCanada Not true. Far more nuanced than that. I manufacture potting soils and use Lithuanian Peat. They manufacture so many different peat substrates from many different layers. I actually found it to be of a superior quality to Canadian peat. I'm in Australia though
