I started watching around 1996 and had seen the crash of Jeff Krosnoff live too which was eerily similar, although on a street course. The catch fence shredded the car and the monocoque ended up on the opposite side of the track. Kenny was "lucky" in the sense that he suffered no blunt force trauma to his head from the fencing poles, but to survive those forces on his brain and heart too was nothing short of miraculous!
Catch fence crashes in indy cars are far more likely to injure the driver than crashing into a catch fence on a stock car. Infact in every nascar catch fence crash the driver has walked away.
The worst part was when Tony George was interviewed after the race and claimed how great a race it was as the medical team was still attempting to extricate Brack from the car.
I was 12 and saw it live, and even at that age, I was expecting the worst. As a child, a crash was exciting, but certain ones were easily understood to be potentially tragic, and this was certainly one of them
I was at the race when this happened. It was pretty wild because his engine ended up in the stands. Fortunately this was on the backstretch because it would've seriously injured fans in the grandstands.
One correction, he was not CART Champion. He won the 1999 Indy 500 which was on IRL's side. He then went to CART when Gil de Ferran was champion, in 2000 and 2001.
This crash is thought to be the most G-forces sustained by a human that survived. At the peak of his spin in the air, it was like 600 Gs or something with an average of 210Gs for the duration of the crash.
210g was the peak of his crash.. You realize that if he weighs 180lbs, 600g would put him over 1/10 of a MILLION pounds, I don't buy that. That's probably just short of ripping the Iron Man suit off of Downey Jr. lol
I was there. Been to a lot of Indy car races and this was eerie. Packed stands and when this happened the place went perfectly quiet. They redflagged it and told everyone to go home. Completely silent.
Kenny also had, at least for a while,a pretty awesome band as well, need to check if they released more than one song, even if it is a really really really good song. Also Kenny's crash made it onto the main news over here. for context, when Dan Wheldon won the Indy 500, it didn't make it on, either time. When Dan won the 2005 IRL title, all we got was a small writeup and a photo. This crash? Made the main BBC news, as did Newman's insane flip in Feburary 03 as well, both with the race coverage.l
I have a funny little anecdote about this. After Kenny's wife gave birth to a daughter in the same hospital that he was recovering in, the family moved to the UK. How do I know this? Well, I had the insane fortune of going to primary school with his daughter, Karma! She was a lovely kid, although quite shy, and I remember racing her around the playground once when she asked to join in my F1 roleplay. Unfortunately I didn't know much about Indycar at the time, so I was never able to discuss racing with Kenny.
You know youre the shit when AJ Foyt, Bobby Rahal and Chip Ganassi come a callin for your services. Then you survive what he did. Dude is built different. What a legend.
Looks just like Austin Dillon's crash at the finish of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. Same lift and spin, same speed, catch fence stopped him on a dime and ripped his car in half. ....AND Austin walked away.
I imagine that finishing your recovery from a crash that should have killed you, while your wife is having your child three floors below, makes you think maybe you need to direct your energy elsewhere.
Chuck Norris has a Kenny Brack poster in his workout room.
That man didnt just cheat death, he told the grim reaper he slept with his mother
😛🤘❗
He *won* the rallycross event at XGames, and that was his first race behind the wheel after his final Indy 500. The man is amazing.

Catch fence crashes in Indy Car are always absolutely terrifying. It’s bad enough in a stock car but in those cars, it’s even scarier.

Man is a walking miracle ❤
214 G's... and he survived it. Unthinkable.
I just can’t imagine how worried sick people were when they saw that crash
Its one of those wrecks where you just think the worst, because how the hell do you survive something like that... insane.
It looked very similar to Robert Wickens wreck too. Crazy.

I was at that race, and it was an awful sleepless night and a somber way to end the season.

@@joshleyva2249 this is true, those engines are not light by any means…
I was watching that day and the feeling of dread was strong.
Great piece
Great Kenny! I wish him a very happy life!❤❤❤

Absolute legend
How the commentators went silent and became instantly serious showed how bad everyone thought it was
they had to put his nerved inside his spin back in place, because of the force and the spinning motion of the crash, they ”slipped out“
Kenny also had, at least for a while,a pretty awesome band as well, need to check if they released more than one song, even if it is a really really really good song.

Did he play the lottery after that crash? Dude must have a big time guardian angel watching over him.
I was at this race with my dad! everyone in the stands feared the worse for a while!
This is why he's the Human Beyblade, he really let it rip!

Kenny Brack-d the catchfence!
*drum noise*
No shit
He broke a caution light too.
I always have a slight but constant fear of seeing someone spearing THROUGH the catchfence and out of the track, hopefully this never happens
Not to bring religion into this, but God had his hands over Kenny that day.
Amen to that brother
Death tried to take Kenny, but Kenny told him up yours buddy.

Brack was an IRL champion not CART
Worst accident ever
Gordon Smileys crash makes this crash look like a fender bender.
In terms of g-forces experienced, yes.
