What a fine rendition of this classic march! And what a powerful trombone section. I like the contrast with the cornet solo. I have an iTunes recording of The Washington Grays performed by The U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band that I have listened to 68 times. They have woodwinds, of course.
When I was at Craiglockhart primary school in Edinburgh, we used to line up in pairs in the playground and march up and down the stairs to and from out classrooms to records of military music. This was one such march. Others included " With sword and Lance", "Under the Double Eagle", Blaze Away", and "Semper Fidelis" with its famous drum roll. This march like "El Abanico" and Sousa's"El Capitan" resembles a concert march. I love rousing marches played by good brass and military bands.
Yes....8th Regiment of the New York Militia...aka the Deutsche Jaeger....German Rifles! hammered at Fredericksburg and held at Gettysburg...long live the 8th!! ALSO held at Bull Run...in GRAY UNIFORM...they were militia. This is a GREAT Version...great musicianship and nor rushed!!
Great rendition. I like this one better than the Fennel version. Big fat triads, great brass and the tempo is just right. Love the climactic slow down for the last chorus. This bring back some great memories from college brass band.
Solo cornet pianisimo part a bit flat at times, I'm sure others noticed as well, but otherwise, great. Love the 'retart' treatment there at the end and otherwise.

Awesome march and great rendition.
Sad to hear of Richards passing on Friday.
RIP "Dick the stick". Nobody does a march better.
