I’ve actually always appreciated the arrangement of you’re body is a wonderland. It’s got a really cool bridge, and he nailed making a sort of sweet, 2000’s pop song.
Thanks Tom I love watching this channel! ❤ I love how you show us and explain all the really cool parts of Johns guitar playing, very nice! The first time I saw John was at Northerly Island Chicago (it’s a small venue, but my favorite, it’s super chill) it was a long time ago, I’ve been a huge fan ever since. He’s great! ❤
Yes it was the old meigs field, it’s right by the field museum and right on Lake Michigan (Burnham harbor), soldier fields right there too. Super cool super chill venue! Love it there I love your channel Tom it’s very cool and fun!
lol how cool! I love planes! I used to go downtown to the air shows all the time! My mom and stepdad had a boat in Burnham Harbor(The Delila Sue) we’d go down there all the time to fish or see the air shows and the fireworks. I love it down there, I spent 40 years of my life hanging out down there on the boat! Lol now I’m giving away my age 😂 I have some of the best air show pics! Being on the water you get some really great pics! Lots of fun down there! How was the flight sim landing on Meigs? It’s not a very big landing strip 😮 That had to be like landing a plane on a ship! That would get your heart pounding I bet! lol
Its a shame they stopped working together for some reason Im also a big fan of David and this setup here. This must be my favourite version of Clarity, seen it probably 100 times by now, and Davids bass during the bridge is just so good!! th-cam.com/video/GkeUum1cMpQ/w-d-xo.html
He hinted at why he originally used the breathy style on a COVID IG Live. He has naturally very deep voice and it was a way to cut through the mix in a higher register. Was also a fan of Jack Johnson who was the other huge acoustic artist at the time. As noted by others, it led to surgery…but this is also the raspiest I’ve seen him.
It was definitely his drinking habits which caused reflux and damaged his esophagus. He has mentioned this in several previous interviews. Breathy delivery is simply a product of poor chord closure. Just poor technique…not dangerous to chord health, generally speaking.
tbh the overall quality of the video is surprisingly good in comparison to the attention that it gets, feels like the top tier of youtube reaction type sh1t, but in summary he's an underrated youtuber for sure.

Could not agree more about Sterling and Pino on wonderland. When I saw them do it live, I wanted to curl up in that pocket it was so deep. A surprise show highlight.
I could definitely see that being the case as well, or just taking time to really find his voice in a live setting. He’s just very intentional and incredibly talented with what comes out of both his playing and singing, so I doubt it’d be completely uncontrollable for him.
The H&K rotary is a nod to Charlie Hunter who introduced the fanned fret guitar to John. Heard that in an interview somewhere. Come to think of it, Charlie Hunter probably inspired the riff (though I have no direct evidence). But using that H&K and that guitar together on this song seems like some pretty strong circumstantial evidence in my mind.
Well, we know he's a big Charlie Hunter fan. I think what you're saying definitely makes sense. The Rotosphere is such a fun effect. Most convincing Leslie emulator I've ever heard. I had one and sold it! Maybe I shouldn't have...
Any Given Thursday's NEON was a GEM to come across and best live band version ever. Love the content, and you're now my fav John Mayer fan channel. You have the same mind and reaction to a lot of his music that I love. Keep it up bro!
For some reason even though I wasn't a fan yet during his Room for Squares and Heavier Things era, I really liked that phase of John. His guitar playing was more "energetic" and seemed like he had a lot to prove during those times. Was very fun to dig up old performances and just listen to how he performed back then. WTLI is still is greatest IMO, but there's just magic during his younger days. ALSO! I was wondering if you can find the Waiting on the World to Change version of John where he plays the typical song but at the end, he switches guitar to his L5 and plays a jazzy outro
There's absolutely magic in the early days of an artist's journey. Tough to match, but luckily in JM's case, he's reinvented himself so many times (successfully) that we get a bunch of different eras to enjoy. I remember when he'd do that on WWC! I'll search for a good example and maybe we can do a reaction to that!
@@EverythingMayer I found it! It's the "storytellers waiting on the world to change" version. It's a japanese video and it's the only one left. For some reason I can't link youtube but there it is! Waiting for your reaction for sure!
Was this before or after the Hampton Sydney show 2/8/02, the all male college in VA? Met him there and have signed setlist and R4S cd book. Was definitely a different guy back then! 🎉😂
What's crazy is how john at this time could really play the shitnout thr guitar but he had to get on the commercial map. Then it was no looking back. Even that he was so good then even on the commercialism vibe initially he showed out
Definitely appreciate you in analyzing and bringing up these slight nuances in his music. Really makes you appreciate his music that much more.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the deep dive!
This video was so fun to watch. I’m here for all the old Mayer vids!!!
We’re gonna do more!
I’m listening to only John Mayer right now and I just found your channel…
Amazing!
Such a great video!! Love you you just casually just play along on some of the songs
Really appreciate that. Should I do more?
Yee!!@@EverythingMayer
this is for sure my favorite TH-cam channel out there
Huge compliment. Thank you! Big plans for this channel!
Havent watched the full vid yet but what a gem of a channel to watch after a long day at work in 40 degrees Celsius 🤩🤩
Glad to have you on the channel! Hope you can check out the whole video and subscribe. Get ready to go deep on JM stuff!
@@EverythingMayer im ready

The bridge is absolute 🔥🔥 and the Pino/Sterling live groove is just incredible on it.
dope video dude! love the commentary
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. More on the way!

So glad to have you and that you enjoyed it! There will be more. Is Northerly Island the venue built on that piece of land that used to be an airport?
Yes it was the old meigs field, it’s right by the field museum and right on Lake Michigan (Burnham harbor), soldier fields right there too. Super cool super chill venue! Love it there
I love your channel Tom it’s very cool and fun!
I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Fun fact: I’m a total aviation dork, and Microsoft Flight Sim used to default to Meigs Field. Showing my age here lol

I appreciate that and I’m glad you got something out of it! Thanks for watching. Hope you’ll stick around for more.
Great songwriting and performances - true dat!
… from a distance girls were shoving in the front row 😂
I just love the way neon sounds in full band ! 🎸 enough of the acoustic version
Bring back full band “Neon”! I agree.
Totally agree with your statement with David LaBruyere! I’m a Pino fan but David’s bass lines are 🔥🔥🔥 he compliments well with Mayer.
LaBruyere is so, so good. RFS is a bass master class.

His breathy style of singing lead to him having surgery on his vocal cords...
i think it was his drinking habits.

4 years before Continuum and already full of perfectly built songs and live presence. And it only got better till these days with Sob Rock
Isn’t it incredible? RFS was so good he could have stopped there and made a whole career around only that album.

My dream song at a John Mayer concert would be Neon on electric with the full band.
He’s GOT to bring it back. Such a jam.
Could not agree more about Sterling and Pino on wonderland. When I saw them do it live, I wanted to curl up in that pocket it was so deep. A surprise show highlight.
Surprise show highlight, indeed. That pocket was DEEP.
I think John said on the commentary to AGT that the breathy voice comes from nervousness on stage. Could be wrong though
I could definitely see that being the case as well, or just taking time to really find his voice in a live setting. He’s just very intentional and incredibly talented with what comes out of both his playing and singing, so I doubt it’d be completely uncontrollable for him.

I remember illegally downloading that performance on Ares when I was a freshman in college back in ‘03…those were some good days!
Those were the days, man! So much fun. What a cool era of music and artists who broke at that time.

Does anyone know specific bootlegs where JM is imitating Clapton’s vocals?
Check out the upcoming episode! Drops tonight and I talk about it.
I never knew thats why guitars had the non linear frets. (The neon explanation)
Super interesting concept!
It’s a d35 he’s playing. I believe his sig Martin wasn’t out yet
The Dave Matthews sig he played or JM sig?

Have pics and probably some video from the HSC show thanks to my canon elph! 😂
I'm not sure! I think after? Awesome you met him at a show so early on!
Wish I was as cool as Mayer
Me too
what strings do you use on your Acoustic? sound nice and warm!
Stringjoy Foxwoods and an LR Baggs HiFi pickup!
John Mayer, Dave Grohl on drums, Flea on bass Alecia Keys or maybe even Jon Deas on the keys would be interesting.
Dig it. I’d go to see that band!
John makes it look easy 😂
what guitar are you using in this video?
Martin 00015M with a LR Baggs HiFi pickup!
Still hoards of women attending John's gigs as of to date. 😁
The *only thing* that hasn't changed! 🎸
Don’t forget all the Grateful Dead fans now too! Lol
