    I have ridden Beartooth Pass 4 times over the past 10 years. The 3rd time I rode it they were still doing snow removal. Since it was Sunday the snow crew had a day off. The gate was closed the first week of June. But since my friend had came from Texas to ride the pass we decided to go around the gate. We were not the only ones to do this. Coming from the west headed east we made it past the lake. We wore able to take photos with our adventure bikes with the snow banks about 10 -15 feet tall. My friend has never got to come down the east side due to the snow. A great reason for me to plan Trip 5.

    My best friend moved from Florida to Wyoming a few years back. He asked me several times when I was coming out to visit. Last year he said "I've got both bikes running" and I was on a plane two weeks later. We rode his 96' road king and 98' springer from his place in Sheridan over the Big Horns, across the desert and over Bear Tooth.
    I've ridden everywhere in the East US, parts of Europe, Colorado and Arizona. Wyoming/Montana was possibly the best ride of my life. Didn't think I'd like the Springer but found it to be a good ride that performed admirably. No matter what you ride just get out and ride.
    Thanks for sharing this excellent video.

    Makes me happy every time I get to stop what I'm doing and watch another episode of this series. I so love your style of travel, Sterling, and your aesthetic rendering of the Beartooth Pass is the best I've seen. The sequence of drone footage on the hairpins is a visual work of art that feels something like abstract impressionism. Awesome work!

      Try living in NYC and the party in power is obsessed with a "densify" mantra as they're overdeveloping everywhere. We used to get a break from all that with various areas having different population densities but oh well now.

    Wife and I + kids stayed in Red Lodge back in 2004. Rode our bike and kids drove the car so we could all have one experience. Being from N. Calif it was a fantastic route and great place
    to stay. Especially enjoyed the fact that Red Lodge does not allow fast food like McD or Taco smell. Road Beartooth Pass and enjoyed one of the best rides in my 60 years!

    Rode Beartooth pass twice, first time 2 years ago and just this past June. It’s so amazing so far my favorite scenic ride. Only been riding two years and learning as I go, I’ve gone on three long distance trips with friends but my favorite riding is solo this past June from Texas to Montana and back with stops thru New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming.
    Your drone footage is simply beautiful what a perspective! I don’t know how that thing goes up and gets back to you from so far away very cool!

    • @JoaquinChea
      @JoaquinChea 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanielTroconisC I was there June 2020 the weather was warm most of the way there but got pretty cold and windy the closer you got to summit of the pass. Definitely not shorts and T-Shirt weather. There was still snow on the ground. But it’s a fantastic ride don’t miss it.

    The struggle is REAL isn't it? As you're setting out, you ask yourself, am I doing this for me or for my audience? If you're anything like me, you do it for both. You MUST take time out of the journey to create the beautiful shot for your viewership because if you don't you won't have any viewers. But you also MUST give to yourself to just enjoy the experience of the ride and the vistas because if you don't you'll run out of "gas" emotionally, psychologically, mentally, right? The trick is always trying to strike this delicate balance while trying to time things like weather, lighting, bio-breaks, etc. I just want to say "thank you" for sacrificing your personal time for us Sterling! This series has been phenomenal to watch.

    I used to ride up to this area as often as possible from my home in Kansas. I love Red Lodge and always tried to stay there and then go up over Beartooth Pass and stop at that restaurant In West Yellowstone, where they used to have the most wonderful pies. Thank you for the stunningly beautiful video! Beartooth Pass is a very special place in so many ways. The pass was also the high point of Robert Pirsig’s 1968 journey in the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. In July of 2008 I retraced his route from the twin cities to the Pacific Ocean. That was my first time to the pass and I was stunned by the beauty. While riding up the Beartooth highway he talked about the “high country of the mind, the most general and abstract considerations where one has to become acquainted with the thinner air of uncertainty”. The Beartooth mountains are not just any mountains. They are an island of granite that is according to geologists up to 4 billion years old. They are some of the first rock to crystallize on planet Earth. Your video heading up to the Rock Creek overlook shows some of the 4 billion year old rock. The island of granite moved across the face of the earth to where it resides today. The rock was sculpted over thousands of years by massive glaciers of an inland sea to form their current shape. As your video shows, the glaciers created a bridge to the summit, the only way to cross the mountains with just enough room for the highway to snake to the pass. I wanted to create a beautiful video like yours in 2008 but lacked both the equipment and the talent. You have put both to excellent use! I discovered I did have a strange talent. 4 years after setting off on my journey in 2008 I discovered a hidden, invisible beauty of the Beartooth Mountains no one else knew about. Where you were sitting at the pass next to the highway is where meridian 109.47122.... passes precisely through the summit at 10,947ft! 109.47122... is the tetrahedral angle, the angle that underlies all of creation. It also underlies all of sacred geometry. You are sitting on or are very close to that angle at the pass. That is a pretty abstract consideration considering Robert Pirsig had no idea either when he crossed the summit in 1968. Since you shared something beautiful with us that can be seen, I thought I would share something beautiful that cannot be seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled. It requires intuition. Robert Pirsig said in the book “all reality is Quality” and that facts are pre-selected before we are consciously aware of them. I hope you return to the pass one day with a GPS receiver and stand in the middle of the highway at 109.47122 degrees west and look over at the sign that says 10,947 feet. Feet comes from an old English measurement of 12 inches. An inch was defined as 3 seeds of barley. You can find the official reference for an inch at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the reference for all meridians and time. Water and barley set the altitude, the measure of the pass above sea level. Water and barley are the primary ingredients of beer, the wildest beverage in the world with origins at the dawn of human civilization. I hope I added in some small way to the beauty of your video. I wish I had your talent but I appreciate what I was blessed with. Thanks for sharing your journey! What I described can be easily confirmed with google Earth and a few internet searches.

      @77llg,
      Thanks for the ZAMM reference.
      You’re very entitled to make your observations about your trip to Beartooth Pass, just like Robert M Pirsig did. There are others though, that just want to enjoy that bit of road for what it is, a moment of riding perfection, and nothing more intellectual or complex than that. Hopefully one day I’ll get to ride Beartooth Pass, and get around to reading ZAMM for a second time.

    I take a nap first to rest my eyes, then brew the coffee before heading back out.

    I haven't done Beartooth on my dual sport yet, but at some point, I'll definitely make my way out there on the bike. It is my favorite drive in all of America, so it most definitely needs to be done on the motorcycle! Great content, Sterling! I'm very much enjoying this series and it's neat to live vicariously though you since I only just started riding dual sport this August. Thankfully, I live in an amazing place (Southern Utah), but the I'll have to scratch the itch of venturing out much further at some point in the near future. Looking forward to some more of your adventures, dude.. Cheers!

      You live in one of the best parts of the country for adventure riding. Good luck on your travels!

    The one thing that keeps me from "camping" in MT or WY is the fact that it's Grizzly Country. I've been through there twice and each time stayed in Cooke City, then road Bear Tooth and into Red Lodge. Locals in Cooke City warned me about the bears and referenced a mauling, 3-4 years ago now, where a woman was mauled, in her tent, in a well known camp ground. No Thank you. Not without an appropriate firearm and light sleeping dog. I stayed at the Motel 8. Nice place and safe. But I envy you guys that can do this with no concern.
