Top Picks For You is like an otherworldly sadness, just imagine going on a recently deceased loved one's TH-cam page and being smacked in the face with a reminder that the world is just continuing on without this person. There is no more "You" in the "Top Picks For You". Just content fed into a void. The synth lead makes me shiver every time, I hate and love it.

I understand the context of Top Picks For You. But I heard this album very, very shortly after my brother passed and how his six year old son watched him die. And how closely he looks like him. And everything that he does is so reminiscent and every time he says “He looks just like you, he looks just like you…” fucking. Kills. Me.

I listened to this album when it came out and appreciated how different it was, liked a few songs quite a bit, but ultimately left it alone for a while. Some time after, shortly before they were going to perform in Phoenix, my uncle died of covid. Everything about this album suddenly clicked. I've never cried so at a concert before and felt so deeply moved. At the end of the show everyone got together for a huge group hug and chanted "RIP!" I know it was for Groggs but for me it was also for my uncle. I don't think anything will top how I felt at this show, as far as live performances go. I'm so glad this came out when it did. RIP Tío Jay.

If you're down for another intense set of listens similar to this, I STRONGLY recommend the last two Lingua Ignota albums, Sinner Get Ready and CALIGULA.
Though they aren't in the hip-hop genre you've been covering lately, these records dive heavily into the grief-heavy themes similar to this one. It shows someone's intense personal experiences with abuse through a lens of biblical proportions, and, especially with sinner get ready, is some of the most painful music I've ever heard.

Hey bob. First time I listened to this I was tripping off 1.5 tabs of acid. Needless to say I have a very strong connection to this album. I really connected to the first track especially with how kind of open ended the lyrics are it’s really easy to project your own shit onto it and that’s exactly what my tripping brain did. You kinda helped me dislodge some of the delusional interpretations I’ve had of some of the songs meanings. I still think the general vibe I got from the first track is valid though. Just this ruthless aversion to avoidance. Someone being sick and fucking tired of people ignoring the clearly wrong acts sitting right in front of their fucking face. Absolutely connects with me, and that epic ass outro gets me every time. You were spot on with that top picks for you analysis. And I think the lyrics in “bye storm” really help to alleviate the need to pick each lyric apart with Ritchie saying that he won’t “show everything” some stuff is just for their understanding and I think that’s okay. Another thing I absolutely adore about this album is how some tracks foreshadow others with some of the soundscapes or lyrics while others can use the same process to call back to earlier tracks on the album. It really makes the whole thing feel insanely cohesive and as someone whose listened to tons of different music I can concur with your “I’ve never heard anything like this” statement. This is truly next level one of a kind and art like this makes me feel blessed to live in the era of the fall of capitalism even with how shit everything is. One last thing, I super heavy feel Ritchie on SS San Francisco with his verse, the overwhelming fear of having children (I’m 21 turning 22 in a week) in a time where every year the climate drastically worsens, yet our society expects us to push out more worker bees for their factories with a complete disregard to the emotional trauma my generation will feel when our children are pumped full of micro plastics, have no nourishing food, have no stable future, and aren’t even guaranteed a safe home, all under a system that dosent give a fuck about us. “Nah you can’t force me through that shit” really fucking connects. Loved this video and love you bob, hope for nothing but good things from you.

Love this album for how vividly it portrays a mindset, it does not always tell a cohesive story as much but instead the production, lyrics and vocal performances come together to suck you into their brains. Tragic and overwhelming but also incredibly impressive.
edit: now seeing the reaction, I love how it fades in and out of clarity around Top Picks for You, having one of the most rational moments during that track and then jumping immediately into probably the most unhinged track of all (wild wild west). That manic energy is powerful

Fantastic reaction. Fantastic album. As I'm sure you've noted from the comments and your own research, a lot of people consider this album "post-rap" as in an atmosphere/sound focused rap album in the same vein as post-rock. I would love to see you react to some post rock if you ever feel up to it and comfortable with taking this channel outside of the rap genre. Bands like Swans and Slint are mind blowing post rock groups.

A big inspiration for this album was an artist called Slauson Malone. Much like this album ‘a quiet farewell’ is something unlike any other I’ve heard. A mixture of lots of guitar and soulful sampling stuck in a void of glitch and chaos. Is right up ur alley Bob would love to see a reaction or for u to check it out in ur own time👍

Easily my favorite album of the decade so far and I'd be really shocked if anything beat it for me. I have listened to these guys for such a long time (dating back to Cooler Colors for those that know, props) but the death of Groggs fucked me up. They essentially created a genre with this album. But more than that, this is exactly how depression and anxiety and the absolute depths of hell sound like. The way Silent Hill as a game captures that, this album does. Its fucking staggering. But also comforting? I just think it's the best shit I've listened to since at least Blonde by Frank Ocean, but it's certainly a top 10 album all time for me. Sorry for the long winded answer. Also that dude had a whole bottle with him every single time I ever saw him in person after a concert and I'd see it open up, and it did not take long for that shit to be empty or glance over and a portion is gone quite quickly. Love these guys to death though and RIP Groggs. Forever.

I love Wild Wild West so much in retrospect. It reminds me of a part of this movie 24 Hour Party People, this biopic/mockumentary of the Manchester music scene, and it deals with the suicide of Ian Curtis and the end of Joy Division, but after there's a scene where they emphasize that he wasn't just a sad person, there's more to him, and it was a scene depicting them all at their happiest, and it felt like this song was inserted where it was to be like, remembering a person passed isn't done best by focusing on their downfall, but by remembering the great things they brought to everyone while they werewith us, and they do that by letting him take center stage for a whole song and casually spitting one of the most intense and creative verses on the whole album
