We got to smoke cigarettes in High School as long as we were outside. That was an actual rule. So you wouldn't get in trouble for smoking, just smoking inside the building of the High School! And if you ever ran out of smokes, the tobacco store with all the great nudie magazines was located directly across the street from the school lol. Cause every 13 year old needed at least 3 Hustler magazines. It was a magical time, when a concussion protocol was getting made fun of by your coaches and teammates because "you got your bell rung". There's no exaggeration there, one game on the opening kickoff I got into a collision with another player, and we were both knocked out for a few minutes as a result. Both of us had a good 40 yard head start in order to build up enough steam to knock the other out when our helmets hit. I went right back into the game too, well right after my coach screamed at me for a good 5 minutes straight for hitting "like a girl" . That's because I led with my helmet and not my shoulder (something girls usually did I guess). And there's nothing like getting screamed at by 60 year old High School gym teacher, who's only still coaching because he REALLY needed that extra $2000 dollars of coach money. To this day, over 20 years later, I still have no memory of anything that happened after the kickoff that whole day. My coaches teased me that they were going to ring my bell before every game, because I apparently played better than usual while my brain was banging around the inside of my skull! It sounds messed up, but honestly it was nice to be able to joke around like that back in the day, which you can't do anymore cause everyone is soo worried about getting sued. What really makes it funny was that this was a High School football game we're talking about, not college, not the pros, just a High School football game. Literally, nobody can remember that game, that's how little it mattered, but because it was the early 90's, we played right through that shit. Now kids get permission from their teachers to take the day after Election Day off, because if their chosen politician lost, the stress would be too much for their mental health... It's just amazing how much things have changed these past 30 years. The 80's and 90's really were a magical time. Back when only good players got awarded a trophy; and nobody cared about your feelings! That might sound cruel, but things were actually better off that way when compared to now. Now all the kids get trophies, and just like the villain said in that movie The Incredibles, "Once everyone is special then nobody will be special". And that's exactly what we got going on today. You even had to memorize all your friends phone numbers, and just hope they were the one's who answered when you called, and vice-versa. Nothing worse than having your dad make stupid dad jokes to your first girlfriend whenever she called you! Then he'd yell at you in the background for always tieing up his phone line. Hell, even being lazy was harder back then due to the lack of technology. For example, it took me a good 10 years to watch every episode of Friends. My son knocked that accomplishment out in only 1 weekend! You can get McDonalds delivered to your door... McDonalds!!! Back then you could ride your bike anywhere, as long as you got back home by dinner time. Having your dad give you money, and a note, so the clerk at the store would sell you cigarettes and beer for him wasn't a punishable offense. And you could even ask your dad for a beer, and he'd probably give you one (just so long as mom wasn't around to see). In conclusion to this long ass diatribe that nobody is gonna read, I'd rather be in my 40's with graying hair now, then a 21 year old, cause soo much has changed in such a short frame of time, and not necessarily for the better. Things were just more fun back then!
