  • The Zombies finally get their due in the documentary film "Hung Up On A Dream," which tells the story of one of the most influential bands of the British Invasion music scene. Directed by Robert Schwartzman, the film follows the band's journey from their teenage years to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Rick Krim, and featuring a talented team of producers, cinematographers, editors, and sound designers, "Hung Up On A Dream" is a masterfully crafted documentary that takes viewers on a journey through the tumultuous music industry.
The film centers around the making of The Zombies' iconic album, "Odessey and Oracle," which features the hit singles "She's Not There" and "Time of the Season." After years of touring and many missteps in the 60s, the band finally achieved mainstream success when "She's Not There" became the first British song after The Beatles to reach #1 in the US. However, it was their later hit, "Time of the Season," that truly cemented their place in music history, inspiring new generations of musicians each year.
As the band members look back on their journey, viewers are treated to an intimate look at the highs and lows of the music industry. From the challenges of touring to the pressures of fame, "Hung Up On A Dream" delves deep into the emotional journey of The Zombies. The film is beautifully shot by cinematographer Michael Rizzi and expertly edited by Meryl Goodwin, capturing the band's story with a raw, unvarnished honesty.
Featuring interviews with the band members themselves, as well as rare archival footage and never-before-seen performances, "Hung Up On A Dream" is a must-see for any music lover. The film is a testament to the power of true friendship and the enduring legacy of one of the most influential bands of all time.
Tomorrow, on March 18th, Dana Gillespie is set to make her debut at SXSW with her London Blues Band at the Continental Club. The performance will be captured for a documentary that will tell the story of her incredible six-decade career in the music industry.
The film will take viewers on a journey through Gillespie's early years, beginning in 1965 when she was signed to Pye Records. At just 16 years old, she accomplished something truly remarkable by composing and recording her own songs, including the B-sides to her early singles such as ‘You’re A Heartbreak Man’, ‘It’s No Use Saying If’ and ‘Adam Can You Beat That’. Along with her contemporary Twinkle, Gillespie was among the first female artists in the UK to write and record their own songs while still teenagers.
One of Gillespie's most notable collaborations was with David Bowie, who wrote the song "Andy Warhol" specifically for her. Although her version of the song was recorded in 1971, it wasn't released until 1973 on her album Weren't Born a Man, which also featured Mick Ronson on guitar. After performing backing vocals on Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars track "It Ain't Easy," Gillespie went on to record an album produced by Bowie and Ronson in 1973, also titled Weren't Born a Man.
The documentary will capture Gillespie's musical journey up until present day, including the recording of her 73rd album, "73:Live At The Tam," which is set to be released as an NFT first at SXSW ahead of other platforms and media in the summer of 2023.
Overall, the documentary promises to be a fascinating look into the life and career of one of music's most talented and influential figures. It will celebrate Gillespie's groundbreaking achievements as a songwriter and performer, and showcase the enduring power of her music. For fans of blues, rock, and pop, this film is not to be missed.
