My First Part-Time Job in University
When I started university, I knew I wanted to have some extra money to support myself and gain experience, so I decided to find a part-time job. My first job was working as a cashier at a small bookstore near the campus. It was not only a way to earn money but also a chance to learn new skills and meet interesting people.
I remember the first day vividly. The manager showed me how to use the cash register, organize books on the shelves, and assist customers. At first, I felt nervous about making mistakes, especially when handling payments. However, my coworkers were very kind and supportive, helping me whenever I needed it. Gradually, I became more confident in my work.
The job had its challenges, such as dealing with long lines of customers during busy hours and remembering where specific books were located. Some customers were impatient, but most of them were friendly and understanding. One of my favorite parts of the job was talking to customers about books. Sometimes, they asked for recommendations, and I enjoyed sharing my thoughts on the novels or academic books I had read.
My shifts were mostly in the evenings after classes and on weekends. It was tiring to balance work and studies, but I learned how to manage my time effectively. I would complete my assignments during breaks or early in the morning before going to the bookstore. This routine taught me the importance of being organized and responsible.
One day, a customer left a kind note saying they appreciated my help in finding a book they needed for their child. That small moment made me realize how rewarding it can be to assist others. It motivated me to work harder and always do my best.
In addition to improving my communication skills, I also learned how to handle stress and solve problems quickly. For example, when the computer system broke down one evening, I had to manually calculate the prices and give correct change. It was a stressful situation, but I felt proud of myself for managing it well.
Looking back, my first part-time job was more than just a way to earn money. It gave me valuable life lessons, helped me grow as a person, and made my university experience even more memorable. It also inspired me to keep looking for opportunities to learn and improve in every job I take.
