yargle dies to too many important red spells....lightning strike abrade harnessed lightning.... torment of hailfire is prolly the best finisher for a MBC variant
Yeah, I was a skeptic at first too until I made a Jaya / FwF deck last week and was pleasantly surprised at her performance. People dog her because she can't defend herself, but I've found that adding RRR works pretty well for defending her.
Its hard for people who don't play red regularly to evaluate a card like Jaya outside of the vaccuum. She is a pure resource train, whether discarding and drawing or adding mana in perhaps the most resource-hungry slice of the color pie. She just requires the proper methods of utilizing the extra resources, which Fight with Fire does exceptionally. It does make me curious if perhaps there are other applications that are as potent. My personal thought is that it would likely require filtering the mana, which can dilute the gameplan. The comparison to Chandra is apt. I think they are very similar in play but differ in the construction of the decks in which each excels. Chandra is better in decks where your win condition is board-dependant. Spell dependant builds do better with Jaya. I think that Jaya's lower level of play works to her advantage as many dont realize her power right away, giving you a turn or two with those resources.
Straight up think you're one of the best mtg content creators around!! Super informative, entertaining and interesting, plus you have a great vibe, straight up think you're hilarious dude. Always got me in stitches!!!
I wasn't implying this is budget I was using an example of a deck with a simple concept which happens to be an episode of budget magic. and in the scheme of control decks it is very simplified in my opinion.
I’ve been playing mono-Black and I found this video helpful. I definitely want to adjust some stuff in my current list after watching the video. Thanks for making this video!
That was very entertaining to watch. I really like the deck. Tough luck in that last match -- the opponent just had great draws. I am thinking you might want to add a couple more Bontu's Last Reckoning into the sideboard, maybe in place of the two Golden Demise? I don't know, maybe. Seemed there were a few spots even in games you won where it would have been easier if you had a sweeper. Thanks for the video!
More sweepers could be good. I wish black had a less downside version, but with Lyras and Shalais running around another Bontu's Last Reckoning or two seems like a great idea.

I play it in my build mainboard and its really good it has a target 90 of the time and it can get cards out of control and worse case senario you get to see there hand
Any chance you could go back to the non-faded cuts when dead space is taken out of the gameplay footage? The fades feel really unnatural, I thought it looked perfect before
In game 5, round two, I am not sure how bad Gifted Aetherborn is in post-board, the lifelink helps stabilize against the aggro and sustain into a longer game so that you may drop your big ol Josu more often. Walking Ballista and Vraska's Contempt are pretty much your only outs against planeswalkers if you cut your low curve creatures on games that you are having issues either finding your fourth natural land or a treasure map. I would definitely think about using Walk the Plank for dealing with rampant 5-drop creatures. Does Kitesail Freebooter help the deck out? It is lower on curve than doomfall, but is only a temporary answer to non-land, non-creatures, but it could be just what you need to get an upper-hand on control or planeswalkers coming out on turn 3-4.
You missed a couple of triggers for Walking Ballista. For example, you blocked Champion of Wits with it, and forgot to ping Karn on combat step. Even if you remove the last counter on Ballista during Combat damage step before combat actually resolves, it still does its damage since the combat resolution is on the stack and damage dealt won't change.
In game one of the last match I feel spending two walking ballistas to kill shalai was overeager. Ballista is an incredible mana sink for cabal stronghold, a removal engine, and waiting one turn would have been painful but tolerable. Essentially you would be trading three life to keep two walking ballistas. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Jack Buttery I would agree usually, but from what I've noticed, at least the list i play cant really afford to lose that much life. That could just be my local meta though, but right now it seems like i have the perfect amount of life gain to stay alive, or even better depending on the matchup. There have been a few times where I just resolve a walking ballista for 20+ and just win like that, and azors gateway adds to the life total too, to make it that much better.
Carter Braun I would agree. This deck often plays from behind, then stabilizes (like a lot of control decks), & can quite often not leave u much life for drawing cards. I've found that even just using the Gateway to loot through land pockets is great.
Control usually runs more creature removal and hand destruction and only a few creatures, where as midrange runs more creatures with hopes they will win through board control as apposed to card advantage.
m Douet hmmm... in that case it's a very thin line, but they are losing quite a bit removal it just seems that most of their creatures double as removal or card draw or whatever reason. The Demon Lord Drew him out of a loss, and he is walking ballista as both removal for small creatures as well as a finisher. Treasure map did a huge amount of car drawing. I think this is undoubtably control, it simply has more in common with the classic mono black control, then with mono blue control because of the massive Mana production
While this is true, this is a pretty high creature count compared to a traditional control deck. The fact that you can win through creature aggression makes this a mid-range deck.
First time seeing the deck, but I played an almost identical deck last FNM (except I only have 1 Karn). I kept getting color screw in my mono black deck! Always had 2 swamp and a stronghold so I could not cast the shade, then drew my 3rd and last stronhold. It was sad. Got destroyed turn 4/5 by a hearth of Kiran/Ghalta deck, then I was dealt 50 dmg buy Aetherflux Reservoir that I could not stop. I did manage to win against a new player playing Hazoret Aggro challenger deck :P
Match 2 game one you punted so hard. You should’ve let the Gahlta hit the board and vraskas contempt it at your end step! He would’ve tapped out for ghalta and you wouldn’t have gotten blown out
You know it's really a lot easier to F6 rather than SPAM THE FUCKING BUTTON BECAUSE IT'S ANNOYING IN EVERY SINGLE VIDEO. You can always turn back off auto yields in case you need to cast something. Magical!!
For the next fish bowl deck tech can u go over the power stone cloning deck that strictly better mtg posted I’d love to see it in an against the odds vid
Just to clarify, IN THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION, it would be two S's. I'm aware of words that have two S's that DON'T make that sound. Just to clarify AGAIN, I was talking about THIS PARTICULAR SITUATION... Since some people have a hard time reading, and some other people read only what they want to read.
do you think karn goes in every deck? cause i feel he could fit in almost any deck, even in aggro you can defend karn, i just feel i think everyone should invest in 2 karn because hes gonna be played from now till forever
Karn goes in almost every deck. Unless it somehow because some popular that it gets banned picking up copies probably isn't the worst idea, you'll get a lot of use out of them.
MTGGoldfish On the later games it kinda, my question is kinda more: how important is ramping into Josu vs card draw. The deck is neat, I was trying to figure out priority of threats
This definitely isn't MBC. At least, not in the classic sense as you'd be running Phyrexian Scriptures, Golden Demise (or Bontu's), and discard main board to trade up in raw numbers and general disruptive value. Beyond that, you'd also be rocking WAY fewer creatures. This is more-so a slowed version of Suicide Black. So, it would be vastly more appropriate to label this Black Midrange.
Diogo V. Kersting I hope they don’t ban Karen just cuz standard bans suck. Also Karn is available to every deck so I don’t think he’s stifling creativity even if he is powerful
Its more that because walking ballista and karn are available to every colour it stifles creativity of most decks that play midrange and some aggro. exactly how smugglers copter did.
Yep, Smugglers copter is the card that came to my mind when I fist commented. See cardboard-crack.com/post/151475983541/standard-deck-building That said, I think it's early to call bans.
Mattlovesstuff yeah, karn may not let you "loot" per say, but imo getting a card put into your hand and getting a card you can cast from exile is probably better than that?
This video needs music. Have you considered recording two separate videos, one without music (that can be put in later) and one with twitch friendly music?
I appreciate that you edited out the wait time while the opponent tanks.
Alex Cody yea it seems smoother and much different!
They've always done that, before they made it so you didn't notice and now they have those fades that make it obvious when something was taken out
Missing Yargle. That can't be good
It has 9 power, nothing more control than that.
Chris Gaus literal power 9
Yargle will get his turn.
Chris Gaus face control
yargle dies to too many important red spells....lightning strike abrade harnessed lightning.... torment of hailfire is prolly the best finisher for a MBC variant
"Jaya Ballard sucks" as she's looting through opponent's entire deck then kicks a Fight with Fire. lol
Yeah, I was a skeptic at first too until I made a Jaya / FwF deck last week and was pleasantly surprised at her performance. People dog her because she can't defend herself, but I've found that adding RRR works pretty well for defending her.

oh look its karn...again
games start at 4:30
This looks like it was edited heavily with small cuts. I like it alot tbh
Dare Gamo he has always done this he just added cross-fades now
>Josh-u Vess
AHHHHHHHHH
Joe-sue
He totally does it for fun at this point. The only option is to start typing / pronouncing things worse than him and one-upping him.
Joshoon Vestpa
Georgie Vespa
You gotta separate out the ones he does on purpose from the ones he legitimately gets wrong
Pronunciation aside, this is a sweeeeeet deck. Very entertaining video.
Joshua Vess, brother of Liljana Vess.
2 hours? Damn that’s some good control. (Not complaining I love longer videos seth)
Bradley Kirsch If you aint getting TIME called, you aint controllin right
Oh, just wait until tonight's Budget Magic comes out, you'll change your mind about long videos :)
MTGGoldfish oh boy that’s ominous. I’m hyped now
Straight up think you're one of the best mtg content creators around!! Super informative, entertaining and interesting, plus you have a great vibe, straight up think you're hilarious dude. Always got me in stitches!!!
oh man, watching the deck get pancaked like that in the 5th round was brutal. much condolences.
man when belzenlok actually hits he hits. 4 cards is insane!
1:17:07 the Soundgarden reference made my day
Scooping without letting your opponent find the line is doing half the work for them. They won't tell you when you have lethal, you know.
I think it depends on the line and how easy or hard it is to find.
game 1: Opponents deck is missing Jaya's immolating inferno.
Edit: literally commented this right before they cast it.....
That level up moment in mtg... when you realize the game is actually about who gets more karn advantage faster
At 1:34:09 if all his karns we're hedron allignments he would of won
Zackkery Winegrad After hearing the commentators say the same thing at gp birmingham I hope this becomes a meme.
I can appreciate the simplicity, my favorite budget magic to date is still GW Little Kid. Sometimes simple is better.
this is neither budget nor simple tho '^'
Well, 95 dollar for modern is kinda budget ^^
SadaParkour *this*
its 500 so i dont know what you consider budget... although i did make an 18 ticket version of mono U contro that works pretty well
I wasn't implying this is budget I was using an example of a deck with a simple concept which happens to be an episode of budget magic. and in the scheme of control decks it is very simplified in my opinion.
I’ve been playing mono-Black and I found this video helpful. I definitely want to adjust some stuff in my current list after watching the video. Thanks for making this video!
Sweet!
35:14 if you know they're getting down Galta then just hold contempt and use it on that while they're tapped out
+1 for the Soundgarden reference
I STRONGLY support you optimizing IDT decks before playing them.
Sweet! Maybe I'll do some more of it in the future.
For the game that ended around the 37 min mark, if you Contempt'ed the steel-leaf on your turn instead of waiting for their turn you could've won.
Even better, he could have let them resolve Ghalta the turn they played and then they wouldn't have blossoming mana so he could contempt it.
That was very entertaining to watch. I really like the deck. Tough luck in that last match -- the opponent just had great draws. I am thinking you might want to add a couple more Bontu's Last Reckoning into the sideboard, maybe in place of the two Golden Demise? I don't know, maybe. More sweepers could be good. I wish black had a less downside version, but with Lyras and Shalais running around another Bontu's Last Reckoning or two seems like a great idea.
MTGGoldfish I've found that the deck can produce so much mana with the Cabal that the downside is minimal.
I love this type of deck, it has great creatures, great answers, and some spice as well! This looks like fun (if you have the money XD)

one thing u got right here was the strentgh of cabal stronghold in mbc.
please, swap 4 gifted aetherborn(should be in SB) for 4 glynt sleeve syphoner and of course 1 swamp for 4th cabal stronghold,
1 torment should be MD
then, after following changes u got a superb deck:
-2 map -3 (or -4, u dont need it) dread shade -2 vraskas contempt -2 karn -1 ballista - 2 fatal push (to sb) -1 arguels (to sb) -1 battle
+3 gonti +2 (or +3) yawgmoths vile offering +2 liliana + 2duress + 2 bontus last reckoning +3 doomfall

"We didn't find a way to kill heart" when he just vraska's contempted the servant of the conduit rofl !!!
You open Treasure chests so we don't have to. Thank you for your service.
I'd put in Divest in the sideboard. You seem to have had a lot of trouble against creatures, and Divest could help that deck quite a bit
Divest is interesting. It seems like it has fairly high whiff potential, but from the sideboard for creature decks it could be good.
I play it in my build mainboard and its really good it has a target 90 of the time and it can get cards out of control and worse case senario you get to see there hand

2 hours!?! You're lucky I like Magic so much, Seth.
Have you ever noticed that Seth's voice gets higher the more he likes a deck?

This was fun to watch. Even in the rare case of a game 1 Ensnaring Bridge, you can tutor the Torment out of the sideboard. Bases covered haha.
Mastermind's Acquisition is a super fun one-of!
I think he will very rarely encounter Ensnaring Bridge with this deck since it is not legal in standard.
lol good point.
Hey Seth Amazing deck and games!
What do You think of Sunset Pyramid? Its a playable card? It can be good in an monoblack control?
Really nice deck, I'm using mono-black too. Its really slow but so much fun!!
This deck has more creatures in it than I'd expect from a control deck. I'd probably call it a midrange deck with more card draw than usual.
Ooh, another video by SaffronOlive, good. Let's just get to- Did that say it's two hours long?! Hell yes!
The kids are eating tonight!!!!
I play three Azors Gateway in my list, it REALLY does work, honestly better than blood fast in this deck imo.
Carter Braun eh. Looting is usually worse than card draw. Flip side is nice but this deck has other ways to generate tons of mana.
Azor's Gateway sounds sweet!
Jack Buttery I would agree usually, but from what I've noticed, at least the list i play cant really afford to lose that much life. That could just be my local meta though, but right now it seems like i have the perfect amount of life gain to stay alive, or even better depending on the matchup. 1:17:47 is the most frustrated "oh my god" I've ever heard
Correct me if I'm short sighted but 26:39 Did the 4 attack Josu Vess just take down a 5 loyalty Chandra?? Uhh...
This looks more like Mid-Range than Control.
m Douet Absolutely agree
Can you tell me how you guys Define the difference?
Control usually runs more creature removal and hand destruction and only a few creatures, where as midrange runs more creatures with hopes they will win through board control as apposed to card advantage.
m Douet hmmm... in that case it's a very thin line, but they are losing quite a bit removal it just seems that most of their creatures double as removal or card draw or whatever reason. While this is true, this is a pretty high creature count compared to a traditional control deck.
The fact that you can win through creature aggression makes this a mid-range deck.
Bro! This is my deck, slightly different but very much close to the same.
First time seeing the deck, but I played an almost identical deck last FNM (except I only have 1 Karn). I kept getting color screw in my mono black deck! Always had 2 swamp and a stronghold so I could not cast the shade, then drew my 3rd and last stronhold. It was sad. Match 2 game one you punted so hard. You should’ve let the Gahlta hit the board and vraskas contempt it at your end step! He would’ve tapped out for ghalta and you wouldn’t have gotten blown out
In the 2nd match Game 1 I do think it was a misplay to not go T2 Balista X=1 to T3 Shade.
How would you modify the deck for the MTG arena format? Replacing the whole bottom part of the curve seems tough.
Great video though, love this archetype!
In match 2 game 3 you actually missed lethal at the end with acquisition for hailfire
29:50 I've done this on arena using Teferi and Raff in my end step
It was fun.
At 1:12 you could probably use cabal, mastermind for lost legacy and take all 3 scarab gods from their hand
Is it just me or is this the longest Much Abrew we've had?
I really wanna see someone build a legendary creature tribal deck with arvard. Im currently working on that deck, its coming around nicely
Chaotic Revenge I'm currently considering abzan, but I'm not sure
So awesome. Thanks for the video
With Seth's pronunciation I'm amazed that he doesn't say "fetal push"
i think a few more board wipes would be good because the removal cant get all of the small creatures
You know it's really a lot easier to F6 rather than SPAM THE FUCKING BUTTON BECAUSE IT'S ANNOYING IN EVERY SINGLE VIDEO. You can always turn back off auto yields in case you need to cast something. Magical!!
Match 2, game 1. Should've contempted on your turn, to not allow opponent an additional draw step. He might have top decked it on his draw step.
For the next fish bowl deck tech can u go over the power stone cloning deck that strictly better mtg posted I’d love to see it in an against the odds vid
Hi Seth can you do a solemnity demonlord belzenlok deck?
Remember when you said Cabal Stronghold wasn't that strong during preview season? Yeah, you were dead wrong on that one.
Game 1 in round 5 could he have not made a really large Dread Shade and sacrificed it to gain a bunch of life and live ? Or did I miss something.
Nice Soundgarden reference haha
Just got a home equity line of credit on my house to play this deck.
So... at 1:11:30 or so, why not masterminds for lost legacy and make them discard three cards?
the video is two hours long
this is gonna be good
Gonna top 8 a GP with this deck, except instead of Karns, I'll run Yargles.
Putting 3 counters on ballista in 1 turn with 2 mana left over feels tron-ish
1:03:39
Why didn't you fatal push the champion of wits? Eternalized creatures have no mana cost.
If a creature comes back with Scarab God it does have the CMC :(
MTGGoldfish also belzenlok died, so you had the revolt trigger.
MTGGoldfish still could have hit the Champ, since they Contempted your Belzenlok
Joshoo Vess. Definitely not Joe-Su... That wouldn't make sense.. AT ALL!
Jah-Su would have two S's. Like the word "Moss". Josu uses the 'OS' in "Most". There's no 'H', so idk why you pronounce it like "Josh"...
Dont forget ARGOO's Blood Fast!
that's not true about two S's but I get your point.
I mean, the word josh has 1 s so...
do you think karn goes in every deck? cause i feel he could fit in almost any deck, even in aggro you can defend karn, i just feel i think everyone should invest in 2 karn because hes gonna be played from now till forever
Karn goes in almost every deck. Unless it somehow because some popular that it gets banned picking up copies probably isn't the worst idea, you'll get a lot of use out of them.
its gonna be a 100 dollar card by the end of the year
Anyone else having some wierd audio issues towards the end of this one?
I wonder is Seth ever used Karn's second ability to get what he wants instead of digging of it : D
Why didn't you exile Lyra and exile teferi instead? You can fight more easily out of the teferi lock than the Lyra with your deck.
Imagine if crypt ghast was in standard right now ;)😎
When you play treasure maps, why don’t you use its second ability more often to draw cards when your ahead on lands once it flips?
Didn't we use the card draw ability a lot?
1:11:38, you could have searched up and cast lost legacy, you had 7 mana, could have stolen all his scarab gods
Yay...Karn.
awesome deck
Demonlord Bells'n'Lock
Is Karn risking getting banned?
See cardboard-crack.com/post/151475983541/standard-deck-building
That said, I think it's early to call bans.
i think the main reasons they likely wont be banned is that they dont offer the consistency of being able to loot each turn
Mattlovesstuff yeah, karn may not let you "loot" per say, but imo getting a card put into your hand and getting a card you can cast from exile is probably better than that?
Walk the plank in the sideboard instead of cast down could kill ghalta Lyra etc
Hmm, this is a good idea. Or maybe Ravenous Chupacabra.
That guy from Match 2 got bambooooooozled by demonlord
Demonlord is pretty crazy when you hit three or four cards with it.
I really don't enjoy that fade-in transition. It is a little distracting at times.
i can't stand them, had to stop watching, but i did finish the vid
This video needs music. Have you considered recording two separate videos, one without music (that can be put in later) and one with twitch friendly music?
Great video.
Am you let. Am like "I am unable to speak English".
This comment is made with the most affection.
1:35:40 crews heart of kiran ............ hahahahahah
Demon Daddy and Karn Father.
