On your 1st aid kit-I’m an 8 year vet of the Marine Corps and I don’t pack much more of a kit than you do. I do make sure I have a tourniquet, super glue (better than butterflies for deeper cuts), alcohol and peroxide (because river water is full of critters-kept in small plastic squeeze bottles), tweezers and a small razor), cortisone cream, and Tylenol PM-kills pain and induces sleep. Nothing larger because I don’t expect incoming fire and sucking chest wounds! Always bandaids and yadda yadda.
I am in year two of predominately canoe camping, but we will be expanding more into kayak camping this year. This has been an absolutely fantastic activity that I have been able to share with my teenage son and his friends (with their dads). We are all investing our time into getting these kids to fall in love with the outdoors with the hopes they are going to plan float trips for spring break instead of booze binges on Florida beaches as they get older!!! As long as I am able to keep going, this is going to be a part of our lives!!! We started with having to buy a lot of gear for year one, so I was TRYING to be budget minded. Now, I am going to plan to upgrade one or two items at a time to improve on gear I use frequently and also give me diversification to have different gear set ups. As always, thanks for the videos! You’re doing great work by getting the next generation into the great outdoors! They’ll be thankful for that many years down the road. And they’ll do the same with their kids! Yep, upgrading a couple main leaves a year is key because gear is expensive! I started out completely budget and now have a nice line up but it is important to just start with whatever means you can allocate for this hobby.
@@shawndearie5439 One cool thing about buying new gear (other than it feeling like Christmas morning when it arrives, of course), is now you have an extra. While it's always good to have backup, I try to utilize the extra gear by bringing a new friend along whenever possible. The more the merrier!
Just got back from a 2 day kayak trip at horseshoe bend AZ it was epic! Me and another in our group had your dry bags and man what a game changer. Super high quality and didn’t leak a drop. Can’t wait for the duffle release!
Whoa that’s an epic trip! Horseshoe bend looks so pretty from above. I bet it’s even better down at river level. So cool to hear the dry bags worked well too!
As an alternative to the hot hand, just bring a pair of cheap leather work gloves. Might not be quite as insulated but a decent pair costs like $10 and I regularly stick my hand in raging fires to adjust the log with one on without worry so long as I don't dawdle.
It's nice to see how your loadout evolves from year to year. Change can be good! One thing you might think about changing is loose ice. Freeze 500ml water bottles ahead of the trip- they last longer, don't leave slushy water to ruin food, are drinkable after they've served their cooling purpose, and as long as we pack them empties out.... 8^) Keep up the good work!
Change is definitely warranted! Lots to be learned over the years and I feel like my kit is dialed at this point. Still some changes I’d like to do but we have the future for that

Dude, we look like the Clampett's rollin' into to Beverly Hills when we go on long cane camping trips. My buddy Poe has even been known to pack his zero gravity lounge chair on trips into the Okefenokee Swamp! I have a pic of him napping in his chair with an alligator sitting in the water behind him, just waiting on him to fall in! LOL!

Hey how's it going . So glad Spring is here now . I got a new car after we had the bad wreck in one of our Dodges . I got a Subaru Impreza hatchback AWD 4X4 and I bought a set of saddles for my kayak can only carry one kayak but 90% of my paddling is by myself anyway . About head lamps if you haven't looked at the one at Harbor Freight with the adjustable beam for the camp you should I don't know if it is waterproof but I try to be off the water by dark anyway . It is SUPER bright and goes from flood to tight beam simply by pushing the lens in or out . And it is not bad on batteries , I love it .
Setting off with my oil-geologist son in law from Montrose in Houston this Saturday morning on an adventure up here in Kansas. Kayaks and Aqua Bound Manta Ray paddles for the trip. I’ve got the Remote Designs back pack loaded and ready. Also using the Jet Boil system and an Aero Press for the all-important coffee on this trip. We will be rocking some Townes Van Zandt tunes during the stops (with the coffee). You have a great list on this vid and it’s good for thought! Thanks for keeping us stoked!

I got that grill 2 years ago when you first posted about it. Mine has been amazing... but I don't dare take it apart because I always forget how to put it back together and waste a good 45min figuring it out again. Super great product.

Hey buddy how's it going. Man that was a good gear list for 2022. This is perfect timing cuz I need to go figure out what I need to upgrade this year too besides Footwear that I cannot find wide enough to fit my foot. The grill is definitely one thing I need to get. Cooking my hotdogs , Burgers , & bratwurst on a pan for now. It's working for now though but it will be nice to have a grill that would set over top of the fire. I'm hoping and praying that the weather won't be severe this year so I can take the family out kayak , kayak camping a lot this year now that my wife has a friend/co-worker that does a lot of kayak camping she can go out with. My wife did not like river water until her co-worker talked her into doing it one time with her to see what the experience was and my wife fell in love with it. As far as a headlamp goes a rechargeable black diamond is the best I’ve used so far, dimmable light with a flood/ spot beam and the red light for early morning or late night when everyone is winding down. And you can check the power level so you don’t have to bring extra batteries

Hey Gatewood...great video. To protect your Paddles, go to an auto parts store and buy some black door edging, the one for vans works best. Wrap it around the edges of your paddle. You can probably see how looks if you watch one of Pete's videos and look closely at his paddle.
I have had great luck with the Milwaukee rechargeable head lamp. Little heavy but has 4 light settings. I also prefer using a biolite stove to any of the one that require liquid fuel. Can always find sticks and branches to burn in it and no worries of spilling/ leaking fuel onto other gear. I also have the grill attachment for mine. Try using an under quilt for hammock camping when it gets cooler
Black Diamond Spot has worked well for me the last 4-5 years in the headlamp department. Looking for something rechargeable for my next. Been eyeing this 1500 lumen Fenix. I dig your videos man. I'm from Michigan so its fun to see your guys rivers down there. Sand dunes for Cypress! So cool.
Hell yes, this was great! This is just what I needed to start kayak camping. Might need a hammock too. I've hear the winter hammock is the way to go so... figure that out for us will ya!😀 The air pump and jet boil are super nice to have, super easy.

I have a Fenix HL18 headlamp that i use at work. Rechargable lithium battery, and if you somehow drain that you can use 3 AAA batteries. Flood and spot modes are nice to have.
I’ve started grinding the coffee beans at home before we leave and use an old fashioned percolator. My main piece of gear is an Orion cooler that matches my Jackson coosa HD perfectly.....full of beer of course.
Haha I like that! Seriously consider picking up the portable grinder. Such a game changer and pretty dang cheap. Cooler full of beer is always good on the river!
I keep my cooler light by leaving it at home! I've taken the philosophy that I'd rather learn to cook lightweight food, even if it's not as good, than haul the extra weight. I don't do the foil pouch backpacker meals though. The quality of my river cooking has definitely improved with additional practice though.
Hey Greg, What kind of light weight food? Mountain House meals are about as light weight as I can imagine, and taste pretty darn good. Curious to know what you like instead.
@@paddlepedalproductions5452 I'm a vegetarian, so my choices are more limited than most people's. Most of the backpacking food on the market is not vegetarian, so that's a limiting factor for me. One advantage of going lightweight and non-perishable with food is that you're not limited to 2 or 3 day trips. If you're used to going with non-perishable food, then you don't have to change anything to do a week long trip. I do have some stuff, like Casa Corona dehydrated refried beans, that I have to order online, but there are options at the grocery, like some stuff called Right Rice, which is a vegetable "rice" that's fast cooking, tasty, and high in protein. Generally a high protein oatmeal for breakfast, various snacks including nuts, dried fruit, clif bars, crackers, peanut butter, etc. I'm working on my own couscous blend with spices and sprouted lentils (far faster cooking than most lentils). I do have some non-perishables that are not that lightweight, like Clif bars, Peanut butter and Nutella.
Also, there are other things at the grocery, like Uncle Ben's rice or something equivalent or Lipton sides, which are quick cooking options, some of which do not require milk. So that's a dehydrated TV dinner, in essence, but then some of the time I'm cooking my own stuff, and the key to that is that you have to test it out at home first.

I’ve been trying to take some inspiration from You and other backpackers with regard to gear. I’ve had so many trips with a heavy kayak and you all prove all the stuff isn’t necessary!
As for headlamps I have been really impressed with the led Lenser h7r core. Excellent headlamp. It's a good all-rounder with both spot and flood focus. ip67 rated,Good battery life. Adjustable dimmer. No flickering which helps with filming. Also my rechargeable Milwaukee headlamp isn't bad either if your not a fan of having a battery pack mounted on the back like the Lenser,
I can say they have both held up pretty well so far. I work on an iron ore mine in Western Australia and have used both for extended periods of time and they have been worked hard. Wet all the time covered in thick dust, banged up regularly, they have survived pretty well. Really impressed with how robust the Milwaukee was to....it accidentally got dropped from a considerable height and ran perfectly after 😂 highly recommend both as rechargeable options!
I'm stoked for that sleeping duffel! I've been trying to get a dedicated dry bag for my sleep gear and the roll up bags have been too narrow. Can't wait to snag one! Also, for winter hammock camping, I wasn't a fan of the quilts, so I had a double layer hammock made by dream hammock. You can fit warming layers inside the gap in the bottom and slide a thermal mat if wanted. Works great

@@GatewoodBrown I absolutely love the quality of the hammock they made for me. Like you, I started with the Ridge and loved it. I did get cold in it and refused to go the quilt route for various reasons. A bit of research on some forums led me to discover double layer hammocks. Even by themselves, it cuts back on some of the wind since there is a second layer. And being able to store spare clothes etc in the gap makes it versatile. Some people even use emergency blankets in between the layers. It's an ultralight option. I personally use my woobie. Also, if you are set on keeping the ridge, there are tie down points inside the hammock along both sides. Woobies have chords around the entire blanket. I tied mine down and slept on it and it worked great. The ties prevented it from sliding and it covers the whole hammock perfectly creating a warming layer. Might be worth checking out!

As for wider and comfy sleeping pads, i've been eyeing Klymit's "Klymaloft" XL pad for quite a while now... that thing looks SO darn comfy, but I just cant justify buying a new pad when my current one that came with my Haven hammock tent still works perfectly well lol.
Haha! They successfully did that last year. Fond memories of the ascend though! I suppose I still need to do a review on that kayak lol. Really enjoying the sit on top life. I’ll check out the klymit pad and compare it to some other options I’m looking at. There’s a lot of good gear out there these days!
@@weatherornotheresmike9303 I hear ya. At the end of the day you really don’t need much other than a kayak, paddle, pfd, tent/hammock, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (tent), lighter, stove, fuel, water, food, medical kit and a camp chair.

Love the vids, GW. In terms of headlamps, can't recommend a Black Diamond enough. $35 or so through REI. Many come with a red lens option which is nice because it inhibits losing dilated/night vision relative to the white light. Catch you out on El Rio one of these days.

I've been binging your videos, they're so good and really makes me wanna get out on a river and spend a few days away. A question I've had is how you confirm you're not setting up on private land and potentially trespassing when you're camping? Is there a resource on the web you check before you head out?
Thanks, BP! That's the age old question and it all depends on your state. Certain states dont allow any camping in the riverbed if both sides are private land. However, your best rule of thumb is to stick to islands. Hard to go wrong there until you're more familiar with your states navigability laws.

I have that Coleman burner I keep it in my boat and I love it. On the other hand it only works perfectly in the summer time. When it’s cold the butane does not work as well so you have to take the can out and shake it a bit then put it back in and finish cooking.
Great video as usual. Gonna take a look at some of that gear. Funny when I went out hiking I was hauling along a Coleman stove and other people was like...wtf. The jetboil is a game changer. I've also done the oven mit idea. It works great but now I usually just do dehydrated meals. Always fun to take a home cooked meal and freeze it. Will be perfect at camp. 👍

@@GatewoodBrown yeah it was heavy. I like premaking a meal and freezing it and putting it in aluminum foil. That way at camp just toss it in coals or ur jetboil and you're good to go.
You actually got me into some of the gear in the past like the head lamp. made putting stink bait on a hook so much easier but here's my kayak/camping gear of 2022. kayak. (Intex K1 challenger) perception kayak paddles. Quantum headlamp. a couple of swimming shorts. sea to summit 20LT drybag. Body glove water shoes. my 2 fishing poles. 3 or 4 tacklebox. food and drinks. -20 degrees sleeping bag and a tent. also don't forget hygiene like toothpaste, toothbrush and deodorant.
@@GatewoodBrown No problem don't know the product of my Paddle glove since their in my tacklebox nore my fishing poles since those are in the garage and I'm not planning to drag those out so those I didn't put the name of them on my list.

Great video as always. I really enjoy the way you shoot/ edit your videos and you have inspired me and my friend to start kayak camping. In regards to a good headlamp, I recommend the Nitecore NU25. I have used it on a few camping trips this year and have been nothing but pleased with it. Give it a a gander and hopefully it will suit your needs.

Look up the brand Coast for headlamps. I'm very impressed. Very bright, several settings and the one I have has two battery options. Comes with a rechargeable and can fit regular batteries in as well

An Air Pump is an absolute must as by inflating your sleep mat by blowing with your breath causes condensation inside the mat which WILL lead to mould and next time you blow the mat up you WILL ingest some of the mould spores - not recommended - so ALWAYS use an air pump and as they are lightweight and rechargeable they add little weight and are easy t use - get a GIGA Pump 2 👍

I have a Black Diamond Spot 350. 350 lumens is plenty bright. Pretty small and light though not as small as some rechargeable ones. Takes three AAA batteries.
Ya the jet boil seems good. I had my hands on one then looked at the price and saving up now. You can make drinks or use it for dehydrated meals. Have you ever tried a twig stove?
@@GatewoodBrown some guys here is the Bush buddy folds down pretty small. Keeps fire off the ground and you just use twigs and sticks to heat your pot or whatever.
I was just wondering if you found any hammocks for winter camping? My buddies in college would put their sleeping bags inside their hammocks on salmon fishing trips. It seemed to work well for them. I am new to your channel and really like it. I hope to maybe start making content one day with similar interests
Just wanted to echo this comment here and recommend at least a CAT7 tourniquet and a Stop The Bleed kit. Often you can find these in a waterproof or vacuum sealed pouch and hopefully you'll never have to break the seal. The tourniquet, I would keep on my pfd or on my kayak. Again, hopefully something you'll never have to use. I would also add to that a HAM radio or a GPS beacon device of some sort to get the SOS out when you're in zero service, but that may be for a diff comment altogether, lol. Loving these videos as always and glad you are spreading great info, great content, and great footage to kayakers everywhere. Let's paddle sometime. I live on the Llano river!

Retyping my comment, some reason it didn't save :P Very timely video GW!! A couple of questions and a suggestion. Will you be using the camp chair that you've featured in the past on trips this year? Is it worth the weight? Can you sleep on your side in the hammock? Or just on your back? You should really look in to the Katadyn Hiker Pro Transparent Water Filter or similar products, and have the Lifestraw as a backup. The Katadyn is really impressive, I've been using one for 3 years now. It works great and is designed to fit the opening diameter of standard Nalgene bottles. Especially in the quality water you tend to paddle, filter as you go instead of carrying a lot of bottled water. I can't wait to use your Remote Designs pack on my upcoming Devils River trip!
Hey PPP! I do plan on bringing the high back chair whenever ‘luxury weight’ is allowed for. So flatwater and calm trips where dragging isn’t necessary. I’m definitely a side sleeper and I find the hammock to be comfortable that way too! Alright I’m buying a katadyn. I’ve had my eye on it for years and need to just pull the trigger. Life straw has been great and a budget option but not as good as other options
Yes! I anticipate a 2023 release. Right now just thinking of features and design (in my head lol) but that’ll definitely be something I bring to market
@@GatewoodBrown I have a Coleman single burner that uses the 1lb propane tanks. I don't use it anymore because it the assembled height plus the pot makes it very easy to tip over.

Great question. For my local rivers I nearly always hit the rock bottom which chews up paddles pretty good. Thus I use a fiberglass blade in skinny water and the bending branches when I know it won’t touch anything but water
Unfortunately you can’t buy the hammock on amazon anymore. It’s discontinued it looks like. Maybe Remote Designs should make a hammock ;) and pick up where they left off.

They’re both low right now! Check with outfitters along those rivers to get an idea of rentals and good launch locations. It can easily turn into a long hike under bad conditions!

I’ve noticed large cockpit and open design boats on a lot of kayak camping videos. I’ve got my 13 ft azul vision coming soon. It’s cockpit is fairly small. Thank you! Mine is a grosche 6 cup. Should be linked in my gear list in the description! You can kayak camp in anything but generally it all depends on the type of paddling you’ll be doing. Long touring sessions will be small cockpit with many small places to store gear, like yours. I prefer shorter miles and sportier swift water like in my videos so a sit on top is great.
One thing not many people bring but I like to is a poop sample- for when the doctor needs one or whatever. Try to bring a fresh one, because it will have the most current contents of what you've eaten. You never know when you'll need a poop sample, so it's better to be prepared.
Targeting this fall! Getting close on finalizing design then it’ll be time for production. I can guarantee this is more useful than the panga 50L. Although the panga is rad!

Yeah it was RPC3 paddles is what you're thinking of. Aquabound sent me the whiskey and bending branches to try out and wow, completely amazed with the performance. Just an incredible design and durability to their products. For budget carbon the RPC 3 is good though

On your 1st aid kit-I’m an 8 year vet of the Marine Corps and I don’t pack much more of a kit than you do. I do make sure I have a tourniquet, super glue (better than butterflies for deeper cuts), alcohol and peroxide (because river water is full of critters-kept in small plastic squeeze bottles), tweezers and a small razor), cortisone cream, and Tylenol PM-kills pain and induces sleep. Nothing larger because I don’t expect incoming fire and sucking chest wounds! Always bandaids and yadda yadda.
That’s great advice and something I’ll add. Ours is basically bandages but that’s not enough for a serious incident.
I've found I don't need much of a pillow in a hammock, but when on the ground a real pillow is the best thing you can do for a good night's sleep.
Agreed. I don’t use a big pillow for hammocking which is nice for packing space

I am in year two of predominately canoe camping, but we will be expanding more into kayak camping this year. This has been an absolutely fantastic activity that I have been able to share with my teenage son and his friends (with their dads). We are all investing our time into getting these kids to fall in love with the outdoors with the hopes they are going to plan float trips for spring break instead of booze binges on Florida beaches as they get older!!! As long as I am able to keep going, this is going to be a part of our lives!!!
We started with having to buy a lot of gear for year one, so I was TRYING to be budget minded. Now, I am going to plan to upgrade one or two items at a time to improve on gear I use frequently and also give me diversification to have different gear set ups.

Yep, upgrading a couple main leaves a year is key because gear is expensive! I started out completely budget and now have a nice line up but it is important to just start with whatever means you can allocate for this hobby.
@@shawndearie5439 One cool thing about buying new gear (other than it feeling like Christmas morning when it arrives, of course), is now you have an extra. While it's always good to have backup, I try to utilize the extra gear by bringing a new friend along whenever possible. The more the merrier!

Just got back from a 2 day kayak trip at horseshoe bend AZ it was epic! Me and another in our group had your dry bags and man what a game changer. Super high quality and didn’t leak a drop. Can’t wait for the duffle release!

In addition to a first aid kit, I usually carry some kind of boat patch kit just to have in an emergency.

As an alternative to the hot hand, just bring a pair of cheap leather work gloves. Might not be quite as insulated but a decent pair costs like $10 and I regularly stick my hand in raging fires to adjust the log with one on without worry so long as I don't dawdle.
That’s actually a great idea! Plus the leather won’t absorb water like a hot hand does. Leather is much lighter too
It's nice to see how your loadout evolves from year to year. Change can be good! One thing you might think about changing is loose ice. Freeze 500ml water bottles ahead of the trip- they last longer, don't leave slushy water to ruin food, are drinkable after they've served their cooling purpose, and as long as we pack them empties out.... 8^) Keep up the good work!
Change is definitely warranted! Lots to be learned over the years and I feel like my kit is dialed at this point. Still some changes I’d like to do but we have the future for that

Dude, we look like the Clampett's rollin' into to Beverly Hills when we go on long cane camping trips. My buddy Poe has even been known to pack his zero gravity lounge chair on trips into the Okefenokee Swamp! I have a pic of him napping in his chair with an alligator sitting in the water behind him, just waiting on him to fall in! LOL!
Ha! If you are happiest with a certain piece of luxury gear then always bring it along! A good chair is key after a long day of sitting haha.

Hey how's it going . So glad Spring is here now . I got a new car after we had the bad wreck in one of our Dodges . I got a Subaru Impreza hatchback AWD 4X4 and I bought a set of saddles for my kayak can only carry one kayak but 90% of my paddling is by myself anyway . About head lamps if you haven't looked at the one at Harbor Freight with the adjustable beam for the camp you should I don't know if it is waterproof but I try to be off the water by dark anyway . It is SUPER bright and goes from flood to tight beam simply by pushing the lens in or out . And it is not bad on batteries , I love it .

Setting off with my oil-geologist son in law from Montrose in Houston this Saturday morning on an adventure up here in Kansas. Kayaks and Aqua Bound Manta Ray paddles for the trip. I’ve got the Remote Designs back pack loaded and ready. Also using the Jet Boil system and an Aero Press for the all-important coffee on this trip. We will be rocking some Townes Van Zandt tunes during the stops (with the coffee). You have a great list on this vid and it’s good for thought! Thanks for keeping us stoked!

I got that grill 2 years ago when you first posted about it. Mine has been amazing... but I don't dare take it apart because I always forget how to put it back together and waste a good 45min figuring it out again. Super great product.

Hey buddy how's it going. Man that was a good gear list for 2022. This is perfect timing cuz I need to go figure out what I need to upgrade this year too besides Footwear that I cannot find wide enough to fit my foot. The grill is definitely one thing I need to get. Cooking my hotdogs , Burgers , & bratwurst on a pan for now. It's working for now though but it will be nice to have a grill that would set over top of the fire. I'm hoping and praying that the weather won't be severe this year so I can take the family out kayak , kayak camping a lot this year now that my wife has a friend/co-worker that does a lot of kayak camping she can go out with. My wife did not like river water until her co-worker talked her into doing it one time with her to see what the experience was and my wife fell in love with it. As far as a headlamp goes a rechargeable black diamond is the best I’ve used so far, dimmable light with a flood/ spot beam and the red light for early morning or late night when everyone is winding down. And you can check the power level so you don’t have to bring extra batteries
I'll check that out! Rechargeable is definitely high on my priority list since I'm sick and tired of regular batteries haha.

Hey Gatewood...great video. To protect your Paddles, go to an auto parts store and buy some black door edging, the one for vans works best. Wrap it around the edges of your paddle. You can probably see how looks if you watch one of Pete's videos and look closely at his paddle.

I have had great luck with the Milwaukee rechargeable head lamp. Little heavy but has 4 light settings. I also prefer using a biolite stove to any of the one that require liquid fuel. Can always find sticks and branches to burn in it and no worries of spilling/ leaking fuel onto other gear. I also have the grill attachment for mine. Try using an under quilt for hammock camping when it gets cooler
I’ll check it out! I often go for lightweight on the headlamp but if it puts out a ton of light and holds good charge that is definitely intriguing

I have a Fenix HL18 headlamp that i use at work. Rechargable lithium battery, and if you somehow drain that you can use 3 AAA batteries. Flood and spot modes are nice to have.

I’ve started grinding the coffee beans at home before we leave and use an old fashioned percolator. My main piece of gear is an Orion cooler that matches my Jackson coosa HD perfectly.....full of beer of course.
Haha I like that! Seriously consider picking up the portable grinder. Such a game changer and pretty dang cheap. Cooler full of beer is always good on the river!
I keep my cooler light by leaving it at home! I've taken the philosophy that I'd rather learn to cook lightweight food, even if it's not as good, than haul the extra weight. I don't do the foil pouch backpacker meals though. The quality of my river cooking has definitely improved with additional practice though.
I’ll have to try that sometime. Shoot, the backpackers don’t take coolers and they’re doing just fine!
Hey Greg, What kind of light weight food? Mountain House meals are about as light weight as I can imagine, and taste pretty darn good. Curious to know what you like instead.

@@paddlepedalproductions5452 I'm a vegetarian, so my choices are more limited than most people's. Most of the backpacking food on the market is not vegetarian, so that's a limiting factor for me. One advantage of going lightweight and non-perishable with food is that you're not limited to 2 or 3 day trips. If you're used to going with non-perishable food, then you don't have to change anything to do a week long trip. I do have some stuff, like Casa Corona dehydrated refried beans, that I have to order online, but there are options at the grocery, like some stuff called Right Rice, which is a vegetable "rice" that's fast cooking, tasty, and high in protein. Generally a high protein oatmeal for breakfast, various snacks including nuts, dried fruit, clif bars, crackers, peanut butter, etc. I'm working on my own couscous blend with spices and sprouted lentils (far faster cooking than most lentils). I do have some non-perishables that are not that lightweight, like Clif bars, Peanut butter and Nutella.
Also, there are other things at the grocery, like Uncle Ben's rice or something equivalent or Lipton sides, which are quick cooking options, some of which do not require milk. So that's a dehydrated TV dinner, in essence, but then some of the time I'm cooking my own stuff, and the key to that is that you have to test it out at home first.
I was just on your website today looking for a duffel/xl drybag for having bugout bags for the worst scenarios. Ordered 75 liter bags from Cabelas. Let me know when yours come out I'll grab a couple more.

I’ve been trying to take some inspiration from You and other backpackers with regard to gear. I’ve had so many trips with a heavy kayak and you all prove all the stuff isn’t necessary!
As for headlamps I have been really impressed with the led Lenser h7r core. Excellent headlamp. It's a good all-rounder with both spot and flood focus. ip67 rated,Good battery life. Adjustable dimmer. No flickering which helps with filming. Also my rechargeable Milwaukee headlamp isn't bad either if your not a fan of having a battery pack mounted on the back like the Lenser,

I can say they have both held up pretty well so far. I work on an iron ore mine in Western Australia and have used both for extended periods of time and they have been worked hard. Wet all the time covered in thick dust, banged up regularly, they have survived pretty well. Really impressed with how robust the Milwaukee was to....it accidentally got dropped from a considerable height and ran perfectly after 😂 highly recommend both as rechargeable options!
I'm stoked for that sleeping duffel! I've been trying to get a dedicated dry bag for my sleep gear and the roll up bags have been too narrow. Can't wait to snag one!
Also, for winter hammock camping, I wasn't a fan of the quilts, so I had a double layer hammock made by dream hammock. You can fit warming layers inside the gap in the bottom and slide a thermal mat if wanted. Works great

@@GatewoodBrown I absolutely love the quality of the hammock they made for me. Like you, I started with the Ridge and loved it. I did get cold in it and refused to go the quilt route for various reasons.
A bit of research on some forums led me to discover double layer hammocks. Even by themselves, it cuts back on some of the wind since there is a second layer. And being able to store spare clothes etc in the gap makes it versatile.
Some people even use emergency blankets in between the layers. It's an ultralight option. I personally use my woobie.
Also, if you are set on keeping the ridge, there are tie down points inside the hammock along both sides. Woobies have chords around the entire blanket. I tied mine down and slept on it and it worked great. The ties prevented it from sliding and it covers the whole hammock perfectly creating a warming layer.
Might be worth checking out!

As for wider and comfy sleeping pads, i've been eyeing Klymit's "Klymaloft" XL pad for quite a while now... that thing looks SO darn comfy, but I just cant justify buying a new pad when my current one that came with my Haven hammock tent still works perfectly well lol.
Haha! They successfully did that last year. Fond memories of the ascend though! I suppose I still need to do a review on that kayak lol. Really enjoying the sit on top life.
I’ll check out the klymit pad and compare it to some other options I’m looking at. There’s a lot of good gear out there these days!

@@weatherornotheresmike9303 I hear ya. At the end of the day you really don’t need much other than a kayak, paddle, pfd, tent/hammock, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (tent), lighter, stove, fuel, water, food, medical kit and a camp chair.

Love the vids, GW. In terms of headlamps, can't recommend a Black Diamond enough. $35 or so through REI. Many come with a red lens option which is nice because it inhibits losing dilated/night vision relative to the white light. Catch you out on El Rio one of these days.

I've been binging your videos, they're so good and really makes me wanna get out on a river and spend a few days away. A question I've had is how you confirm you're not setting up on private land and potentially trespassing when you're camping? Is there a resource on the web you check before you head out?
Thanks, BP! That's the age old question and it all depends on your state. Certain states dont allow any camping in the riverbed if both sides are private land. However, your best rule of thumb is to stick to islands. Hard to go wrong there until you're more familiar with your states navigability laws.

the french press for the jetboil works pretty good. i also have the summit pan, super quick. burgers within 10 mins

It's made by jetboil. Grooves on bottom of pan match that of the pot stand. Kinda holds it on there even at slight angles.

I have that Coleman burner I keep it in my boat and I love it. On the other hand it only works perfectly in the summer time. When it’s cold the butane does not work as well so you have to take the can out and shake it a bit then put it back in and finish cooking.
Ahhh the cold butane info is interesting, I didn’t realize that. I always thought it lacked efficiency but maybe that was a function of the temps
Great video as usual. Gonna take a look at some of that gear. Funny when I went out hiking I was hauling along a Coleman stove and other people was like...wtf. The jetboil is a game changer. I've also done the oven mit idea. It works great but now I usually just do dehydrated meals. Always fun to take a home cooked meal and freeze it. Will be perfect at camp. 👍

An Air Pump is an absolute must as by inflating your sleep mat by blowing with your breath causes condensation inside the mat which WILL lead to mould and next time you blow the mat up you WILL ingest some of the mould spores - not recommended - so ALWAYS use an air pump and as they are lightweight and rechargeable they add little weight and are easy t use - get a GIGA Pump 2 👍

I have a Black Diamond Spot 350. 350 lumens is plenty bright. Pretty small and light though not as small as some rechargeable ones. Takes three AAA batteries.

Ya the jet boil seems good. I had my hands on one then looked at the price and saving up now. You can make drinks or use it for dehydrated meals. Have you ever tried a twig stove?
They’re premium for sure but absolutely worth it. Massive weight saver too. I’ve never tried a twig stove
@@GatewoodBrown some guys here is the Bush buddy folds down pretty small. Keeps fire off the ground and you just use twigs and sticks to heat your pot or whatever.
I was just wondering if you found any hammocks for winter camping? My buddies in college would put their sleeping bags inside their hammocks on salmon fishing trips. It seemed to work well for them. I am new to your channel and really like it. I hope to maybe start making content one day with similar interests

As a Infantry Combat Lifesave/EMT, that has to be one of the smallest medical bag I've seen for IFR.
It’s not the best and something I definitely need to upgrade.
Just wanted to echo this comment here and recommend at least a CAT7 tourniquet and a Stop The Bleed kit. Often you can find these in a waterproof or vacuum sealed pouch and hopefully you'll never have to break the seal. The tourniquet, I would keep on my pfd or on my kayak. Again, hopefully something you'll never have to use. I would also add to that a HAM radio or a GPS beacon device of some sort to get the SOS out when you're in zero service, but that may be for a diff comment altogether, lol. Loving these videos as always and glad you are spreading great info, great content, and great footage to kayakers everywhere. Let's paddle sometime. I live on the Llano river!

Very timely video GW!! A couple of questions and a suggestion.
Will you be using the camp chair that you've featured in the past on trips this year? Is it worth the weight?
Can you sleep on your side in the hammock? Or just on your back?
You should really look in to the Katadyn Hiker Pro Transparent Water Filter or similar products, and have the Lifestraw as a backup. The Katadyn is really impressive, I've been using one for 3 years now. It works great and is designed to fit the opening diameter of standard Nalgene bottles. Especially in the quality water you tend to paddle, filter as you go instead of carrying a lot of bottled water.

Hey PPP! I do plan on bringing the high back chair whenever ‘luxury weight’ is allowed for. So flatwater and calm trips where dragging isn’t necessary. I’m definitely a side sleeper and I find the hammock to be comfortable that way too! Alright I’m buying a katadyn. I’ve had my eye on it for years and need to just pull the trigger. Life straw has been great and a budget option but not as good as other options

@@GatewoodBrown I have a Coleman single burner that uses the 1lb propane tanks. I don't use it anymore because it the assembled height plus the pot makes it very easy to tip over.

Great question. For my local rivers I nearly always hit the rock bottom which chews up paddles pretty good. Thus I use a fiberglass blade in skinny water and the bending branches when I know it won’t touch anything but water
Unfortunately you can’t buy the hammock on amazon anymore. It’s discontinued it looks like. Maybe Remote Designs should make a hammock ;) and pick up where they left off.

They’re both low right now! Check with outfitters along those rivers to get an idea of rentals and good launch locations. It can easily turn into a long hike under bad conditions!

Haha crocs probably work well! Only when you have to get out and drag might they be tricky. I’m still hunting for the perfect summer shoe. Astral grip on wet rocks was amazing!

I’ve noticed large cockpit and open design boats on a lot of kayak camping videos. I’ve got my 13 ft azul vision coming soon. It’s cockpit is fairly small. I’m wondering if I should of went for more of an open design.

You can kayak camp in anything but generally it all depends on the type of paddling you’ll be doing. Long touring sessions will be small cockpit with many small places to store gear, like yours. I prefer shorter miles and sportier swift water like in my videos so a sit on top is great.
One thing not many people bring but I like to is a poop sample- for when the doctor needs one or whatever. Try to bring a fresh one, because it will have the most current contents of what you've eaten. You never know when you'll need a poop sample, so it's better to be prepared.

Yeah it was RPC3 paddles is what you're thinking of. Aquabound sent me the whiskey and bending branches to try out and wow, completely amazed with the performance. Just an incredible design and durability to their products. For budget carbon the RPC 3 is good though
