I joined beta after viewing an earlier video of yours and purchased the specialist plan. A year subscription. Well worth it. I used to be against AI, but came across your videos and realized--it wasn't at all what I imagined. I now see it more as a brainstorm and critique partner that is available 24/7. True, it sometimes spews clichés or bazaar things, but nobody is perfect. Those imperfections triggers my imagination to run wild and raw--without judgment. I vomit fractured visions and somehow it understands my disease and prescribes me a treatment to ease the insanity. I adore your videos and your honesty. A pleasure to watch.

Because of your previous comments, before this video, I began using Novelcrafter with Claude 2 only. I have found the combination powerful and easy to use. Before Novelcrafter came on the market, I had earlier looked at competitors to Novelcrafter and gave up trying to use them because they were so complicated that I could write the novel faster without the so-called help or the help was nothing original. You are so right to point out how Novelcrafter learns from previous editing. I hate to tell people about how effective and superior Novelcrafter is for fear it will get overloaded. I do appreciate your comments about "Tinker," which I have not used, because I have not understood it yet. FYI I have nothing to do with Novelcrafter one way or another; I just use it.

I gotta say that the learning curve on NovelCrafter is light years easier than Sodowrite. The quality of the prose is amazing and the codex, once you understand how it works, is amazing. The biggest challenges are figuring out which models work best. Currently the prompts are the hardest thing to master, but there are plenty of prompts that work right out of the gate. I'm glad Jason did a review of this tool. I think it's what the AI novel writing community has been looking for.

Thank you for this! BYOK was one of the things that intrigued me but it was a little confusing to set up. I started with open router so I could have unfiltered, but that's all I really knew about it: it was how to get unfiltered. But it was so cool to see that it also has Claude, which I've been wanting to play with! And toppy is pretty good! It's the one I've been playing w during the beta the most because it's free. But it's been doing decently.
I really love the Plan feature, I am a huge outliner and also a lover of Derek Murphy's 24/25 chapter structure/plot dot.
Since you're really good at prompting, would you consider going over the saved prompt feature it has and how you're using it? Especially since different AIs need different prompt structures?

This is an EXCELLENT video! Thank you! I have a question about some issues with NovelCrafter and wonder if you could make a video addressing them. (I'm loving it, by the way! Thank you for introducing me!) First issue: I rearranged scenes in Plan, and ended up losing an entire chapter! Help! I'm now terrified to move anything in Plan. (I'm backing up much more often!) Second: NovelCrafter keeps switching to dark mode at random times. Third: Occasionally, when I hit the shift key while typing, it stops typing and toggles between full screen and not full screen, between showing the chapter and scene summaries and not showing them. I'm on a Mac, and I've tried everything I can think of to figure out why this happens sometimes, but not at other times. Are these issues you face? Can you possibly do a video on glitches, issues, and how to handle them?

However I wonder why, after using it for only a few hours, I got already billed with more than 4$?? The only thing I did was chatting with the AI inside the chat function about my book idea. Got some questions about this one. First of all how does it work with for example Claude 3.5 message limits? Because it looks crazy with claude free and pro, getting out of daily message info after like 20 messages. Second if i will connect claude 3.5 to novelcraft how does the token limits looks like, what i mean by that is, if i want to wrtie a novel does the 200k tokens memory limit to remember what we wrote before to make the story consistent still work? Third, what is the cost for it, considering that i would want to use novelcraft with claude 3.5?

Thanks for sharing. How do you feel this tool compares to Scrivener? I only use AI to help me plan out my 3 act structure, flesh out my characters, and provide me with artwork for my character notes, and landmark notes. I may experiment with AI as a reviewer tool, though I'm more than a bit worried about plagiarism due to the way that generative AI works, so that's still something I do by hand for now.
*EDIT* I experimented with NovelCrafter for a day, and I have to say I was blown away. I imported my book, and research, and when I would have it revise my work, it actually did a pretty decent job of using my style and prose. I had to make minor tweaks here and there, but overall I think it did a great job. The fact that it's using my style and prose rather than stealing others makes me feel more confident that I wouldn't be plagiarizing others. I'm sure that if it didn't have any context to go on that would be a concern, but I feel a lot better about using it as a collaborative tool now.

    Hi, The Nerdy Novelist,
I appreciate your channel and have watched many of your videos-they've been a great resource. However, I struggle to accept the title of this video. You emphasize starting out strong, yet there’s no mention of the complexities or rich features within the writing function, such as utilizing Codex.
I have a very detailed story bible, including plot outlines, character profiles, subplots, and themes. However, navigating NovelCrafter’s features without a comprehensive tutorial has left my novel unfolding inconsistently. I’m confident that if I could input my story bible as effectively as AI allows, the generated prose would improve dramatically.
Could you please point me to a thorough and detailed tutorial on how to fully leverage NovelCrafter? Specifically, I’m looking for guidance on ‘programming’ it to utilize its features to their fullest potential.
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, so I decided to take a look into this program and I am not sure if I am misusing it or not doing enough, but it isn't outright promising.
I wanted to see what this program could do so I entered in the main characters from a book I was already writing, drafted a summary of the first chapter I wrote, and used that to guide the scene beat. Me thinking 1 scene = 1 chapter. If I am mistaken someone please correct me. But that brings me to the issue. Its hollow.
There isn't a gradual introduction of character. It knows the details as I provided them for the characters listing, but it did not include them. Nor did it make an effort to characterize the characters. In the first chapter I wrote myself, I have a scene where the MC kills a Villager. He isn't enthused about doing it, but also has this look of conviction like he was out of options. He was committed to what was going on. It is a brief two paragraphs, but highlights one of his character traits. The AI included the scene, but brushed it off as a 1 liner and moved on. And it does this with every character building opportunity it has.
It equally does not set the scene or introduce the scene other than a 1 off sentence. The part that crached me up the most was that even when given a clear instruction of how the scene starts and ends, it rushes through the scene in 2 paragraphs and then adds its own material. I will note for those curious, I am not trying to get the AI to replicate my og chapter 1:1. I am just giving it the necessary context to know what needs to happen, but the details of how and the results are up to the AI minus one key point being the woman's capture.
    The scene beat:
Aldrin, Luthar, and Karen follow up the rear of a procession of Vampire soldiers. Before them, a village lay in near ruins. Their warriors had already overwhelmed the meager defenses they had and the village was being put to the sword. There was no glory here, just swift death. No hesitation or malice. Just quick, merciful, lethal blows. While the village is being raided, one of Aldrin's soldiers tortures a little girl to spite it's mother. Aldrin interferes and attempts to save the girl's life but is too late. She is too wounded. Aldrin lets the mother bid her goodbyes before pushing a dagger into the girls heart to spare her from further pain. Before the mother could kill herself, Aldrin stops her. He is drawn to her but for reasons he can not explain. It isn't love or lust, but something else. HE chooses to take her captive just as the rest of the village is set ablaze. Aldrin leads his siblings and their warriors from the village, leaving it a pile of ash.
    AI Output:

Aldrin led his siblings and their warriors from the village, leaving it a pile of ash.
Aldrin strode ahead, his black cloak billowing behind him. The screams and cries of the burning village rang in his ears. He had seen countless villages razed in his immortal life, but this one gave him pause.
The woman he had spared walked behind him, head down, defeated. She had not spoken since watching her child die. What did Aldrin want with her? A plaything, a pet? No, it was more than that. He was fascinated by her spirit, her will to live when all had been taken from her.
Luthar and Karen flanked Aldrin on either side. Luthar's hand rested on the hilt of his sword, ready to draw at the first sign of any remaining resistance. Karen eyed the woman curiously, wondering what her eldest brother saw in the dull-eyed peasant.
"Was it wise to spare her?" Karen asked. "She will be nothing but trouble."
Aldrin did not break stride. "She interests me. There is steel in her soul, under the fear and grief."
"I don't like it," Luthar grumbled. "You put too much stock in these cattle."
Aldrin whirled, his cloak scattering ash and embers. Luthar took an involuntary step back.
"Do not question me, brother," Aldrin said, his voice deathly quiet. Karen looked away as Luthar nodded reluctantly. Satisfied, Aldrin continued on.
The woman kept her eyes downcast. Aldrin considered her as they walked. There was power here, he was certain of it. In time, she would learn to embrace the darkness as a new life opened before her. Aldrin permitted himself a smile. Yes, he had plans for this one.
    Conclusion:
So... out of the gate I am not impressed. I am thinking what I will need to do next is add lore, sub characters, and more general info that sets up or plays into the first chapter. And if I have to write a more detailed Scene Beat, then I can do that too (though if I do I might as well just go back to the chapter I wrote?). I will play with it more but, overall, I am not impressed with its results and if this is what people are using to write books... well... I am sorry but I feel bad for the books because a person can write better than this.
I will just have to see if the other tools and codex help the AI. Another concern I had was the length. I am not sure why it feels it needs to rush through the scene/chapter but it does and IDK how to avoid that.
    EDIT:
I think what I will try to do is break up the chapter into smaller chunks and let the scene beats handle the chapter in portions. If that is how this should work then great. We shall see.

@@Art0691p I haven't really written many short stories, so I can't help there. That said, the process of writing a story is pretty much the same. It's mostly the planning stage that differs. I would imagine that the process should be identical, but I will admit I could be wrong.
One thing that might help is to be more specific about the POV, or prose to use for given characters in different situations, so that you don't get lots of detail where it's not needed, and more detail where it is. Also be sure to fully populate your Codex before you begin writing. It will make an enormous difference regardless of the type of book you are writing.

@@BruceWayne15325 Thanks. Yes I have populated the Codex and doing the POV stuff. I think it was really how the NovelCrafter UI template is geared to long form i.e. book, chapter etc but then it is called NovelCrafter :) In the end I decided that each short story could be a 'chapter' in a collection (book) of other stories, as they have similar themes - even though they will eventually be published separately and not as a collection. This seems to work with the AI however.

Love your videos! In NovelCrafter, do you have to write sequntial chapters, or can you skip around? Will the AI take into consideration any later content and try to connect the dots so the prose it generates leads you in the right direction? Thanks, and keep the great videos coming!

    • @LandareeLevee
      @LandareeLevee ปีที่แล้ว +3

I’m a bit of a pantser, so I happen to “skip” a lot, and it works-with caveats. To an extent you can do it, as long as you’re aware that the AI might struggle to understand the jumps and “fill in the holes” (if, for example, you start writing what’s essentially chapter 18 of a 20-chapter novel)… and, even if you did write the previous 17 chapters at least in draft quality, the AI’s only way to understand what’s happened so far is reading them all-which can be quite costly. Bottom line: if you also provide summaries for those previous chapters and scenes, or even if you only have those and haven’t actually started writing them yet… then yes, the AI will have enough efficiently-written backstory to remain on point, wherever you jump. You can write those summaries yourself, or have the AI do it for you, if you did write the scene/chapter to any length.
Keep in mind Novelcrafter isn’t an AI by itself, or has one you could call “Novelcrafter’s AI”… it simply connects to known ones like ChatGPT, Claude and many others-often cheaper, some even free. So, Novelcrafter’s ability to “jump” and “fill in the holes” will be exactly that of those other models if you used them natively in their respective websites / UIs. So, how much? Depends. Sometimes your chosen AI will “shrug off” the holes and mostly just focus on whatever scene you’re writing at the moment, trying to understand the entire context just from it (regarding characters, plot arcs, etc). Their success will depend mostly on how much it needs to know, that is nevertheless not explicit or even implicit in your scene; if character X is a villain but at the moment seems to be acting nice and even compassionate, the AI might render him at best as a misunderstood person, or even a sympathetic one.
What’s good in Novelcrafter is that you can keep adding info “as needed” (on characters, plot, etc), and it’ll stay there, allowing you to “pantser” to an extent, rather than go full-plotter before you can even start generating a single Scene Beat anywhere ;)

Funnily enough, since I finished that instruction with a , it doesn’t do that… but still prefaces most generations with something like “Here’s your scene, with 250,000 characters:”… and is because I forgot to also say, . If you’re going to use Claude mainly, though, you can always create a custom prompt for it (you can even name it “Scene Beat Gen. - Claude” and only add the Claude AI models for that one, for simplicity), and word it exactly how it’ll work best for Claude… including appropriate wording, HTML-like tags, reordering the prompt’s structure to indulge the change Anthropic did to their latest 2.1 model… etc.
