That was one of the best and most honest assessments of these two breeds I have ever heard. You hit the nail on the head as to the primary points all first time purchasers should be aware of when considering ownership of a particular breed. A special thank you for touching on the importance of genetic history of lines within a specific breed.

I have a Doberman and I feel like they are greatly overlooked and I feel strongly they should come with as many reservations as a Belgian malinos. I feel like a Doberman should come with a warning label. They have so much gas in their tank, and so much “go” energy and need a “job” just like a BM. My dobie is soooo sweet and loving but also a handful and requires a ton of attention and exercise and food.

As a person who has a 6 yo and a 14 yo Malinois, just know they never slow down. The 14 yo still full sends and I am constantly trying to make sure she doesn't hurt herself, you wouldn't know she is that old other than the fact that her entire face is basically white. All of your dogs are absolutely beautiful, and don't worry fur tumbleweeds only come around twice a year. LOL

I have 2 Doberman's 1 Red girl, 1 black male. Best guard dogs ever. I also have 2 Pitbulls. I reall want the Belgian but, I know they require a lot of time. They are not pets. They want to work. By the way.. People move away when I walk the doberman's. Not many people have them nowadays. Total intimidation factor. I like that.

I wish everyone researched these breeds. We work with Dobie rescue and have, unfortunately, delt with multiple doberman health issues (DCM, Osteo Sarcoma, Aseptic Meningitis). We also have a Mal and you are ABSOLUTELY correct. They are NOT for the first time dog owner. Don't get me wrong, love him!!!! but getting him to 21/2 years old was more work than I've done with any other dog we've owned x 2 (We've has Shepards, Dobermans, Standard Poodle, Shelties, and a Cairn Terrier) This is a GREAT video and I'm going to be recommending it to anyone who approaches me when we are walking the pups. Train early, frequently, and consistanlly. Geat Job!!!

  • @robinrutherfordcost4748
    @robinrutherfordcost4748 ปีที่แล้ว +11

You can check out dog shows that have cardiology health testing for a lower cost check, especially if you didn't buy from a breeder that tests for DCM. The famous red Dobe, Ruby, passed away from DCM. They also have Von Wildebrands testing for that factor - like clinics usually won't spay/neuter a Dobe without knowing that. My vet was awesome with the ears. They allowed the ears to heal naturally without anything for 1 week (granted they were 11 weeks old), then taped them up. After 3 days had to check them as they reeked. Removed the tape and they stood straight up, never had to be retaped. I know that's rare, but it pays to find a vet and get pictures of what the ears will look like - so many vets cut them as if they're a Great Dane and they'll never grow into them. There are also 3 different crops - pet, show, and standard i believe. And a lot of vets won't do the ears anymore and they are no longer teaching it in vet schools either. Hope that helps.

I've had a few Dobermans in my life 2 females that lived to 13 and 14 years old. Never had their heart checked and never had an issue with it. They both died of cancer. My third Doberman was a male never had his heart checked and didn't have issues with it. He did die of brain cancer when he was 5 years old. I've had more issues with Cancer. I feel like the DCM issue is more recent than when i had my Dobermans as my Veterinarian never mentioned much about it. Maybe because they didn't have a issue with it back then. My Doberman i got in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I really haven't heard of this DCM issue until recently, like in the last 5 years. Reputable breeding is very important. I'm glad i had my Dobermans before this issue came about. I'm lucky to have had by Dobermans for so long. I have always loved Dobermans and always will. As a child growing up we had one and i have loved the breed ever since. I have had other breeds of dog since but Dobermans will always have my heart! ❤ Good video btw!

I have a 1 1/2 yr old female Doberman. I had had Doberman's back in the 1980's with good experiences and wanted to get another one. It wasn't until I got her that I heard about of the genetic issues and that it was from in breeding. Too many Doberman's were bred to a Champion male back in the 80's which resulted in all these issues. I did have my new Doberman tested through Embark and she fortunately she does not have the gene for Dilated Cardiomyopathy. She does have a single gene for Von Willebrand Disease, but she doesn't appear to be affected. If I ever decide to breed her, I would make sure the male doesn't have this gene. If I were to get another Doberman, I would want to see the genetic testing for both parents.

My dobie adores children. All children. Probably too much as she will lunge at them to kiss/smell them...but she's never shown the least interest in hurting them. (She just really, really wants to kiss that baby...)
I don't think either breed, though, is aggressive towards children. Dogs are pretty darned good at realizing that children are a fragile part of their pack that needs to be defended.

I was actually nervous about my dog just based off their reputation but she has just impressed me. Showed me how intelligent she is. How easy going she is. She actually makes me want another 😂. We now have our third Doberman. They’ve all been amazing although our third is without question our best trained. I’d love another dog and I’m trying to decided between another Dobie or a Malinois. Our female is a big heavier than these one as we’re my others. We’ve had ours at 80, 86 and 92 pounds. Perhaps that’s because we’ve always had European Dobies. The males hit about 105-110. The Maly might be a change in training which I enjoy doing. Our Dobie also gets along well with the Malinois that she’s met. The deciding factor may be food requirements. It’s not cheap feeding raw and our Dobie can definitely eat. I’ve heard the Maly eats a bit less making them less expensive to feed. It’s a hard decision to make.

i got my malinator at about 7 months (she's now 18 months old) and she's just a velcro baby doll. but i do agree, she has a tendency to go wildly playful w/ certain peeps. but most of the time, she's just chill until she sees a stray cat on our walks and runs.

@@ashtonhardy5666 just an update now that my bailey is 22 months, it seems she has more self control lately. she isn't riled up by stray cats on our walks and runs anymore. i think her puppy energy is now turning into adult wisdom. she probably realized that anxiety is a waste of her energy.
on one side, she totally ignores dogs who approach her until they're encroaching on her doggy bubble. when this happens, she begins to be wary and alert on what the other pooch's intentions. but other than that, she just views them w/ semi- detachment.

We've had Dobermans for over 20 years. The breeder health tests her dogs, and honestly other than an annual vet visit I've not spent dime on them. All of my dogs lived past 11 years and ultimately their hips, backs and nerves gave out causes loss of control. But I agree they can be unhealthy, make sure the parents have been tested and the breeder has longevity as a goal.

Dobbie guy in here. I believe that in here (Europe) the 60% DCM doesn't occur, it helps if you study the pedigree before buying a puppy. Till now none of my Dobermanns had it. And yes won't have any other breed, they are everything I want in a dog.

I rescued a Malinois who had been labeled as a GSD. It's been like having a hyperactive 10-year-old in the house but Yukie is part of the family. Although, my daughter is tired of being herded from room to room whenever she stands up. Yukie picked up German and Danish in one day and she gets bored because she learns something after a couple of tries. I feed her a diet of kibble, oatmeal, rice, and Dinovite, and her fur is so soft.

This just shows how much a malinois get extremely attached to their owners and can be a family pet with the right owner/family. No bad dogs just bad owners. My friends had a doberman called Saxon and he was the sweetest boy who thought he was a lap dog. DCM took him when he was 7 and they had no idea and you're right by the time they found out it was too late. I miss my enormous lapdog.

Dobermans are sweet, devoted, naturally protective dogs. I lost both of my Dobermans (brother and sister) to DCM one week apart at 7. Their sudden loss still haunts me to this day. My others, over the years, lived to be 8 and 9. They are an unhealthy, expensive breed to own.

Most working caliber Mal/Dutch do not work in a normal family. The traits to be a good working dog are diametrically opposed to being a good pet.

    • @Lizzie-h3j
      @Lizzie-h3j ปีที่แล้ว +1

@jfkst1 I know I love them but there's no way I could handle such an intense dog. I've got a Boerbol and a patterdale terrier. My boerbols a big softie it's the little terrier you have to watch. If she's sitting with me and someone walks within 5 ft she's goes into full blown protection mode. She's a rescue so I don't know her history my boerbol I've had from a puppy. I think this girl works her dogs and she seems really dedicated. I had a friend who's dad likes to shoot, we're in the UK, and he sent his newest labrador pup away for training and all I could see was that she'd totally had her spirit broken when she got bck. She was almost too well behaved. I kidnapped her and took her for the weekend and taught her how to play again it was so sad to have to give a 5 month old puppy permission to play 🥹 my son was 8 at the time so he helped but I was heartbroken giving her back. She didn't even have a bed she had to sleep on the cold kitchen floor. My uncle shoots and has working dogs and they're nothing like her. Do your research before you send them away I'd ask to meet their "sucess" stories first but tbh I would never send my pup away I'm capable of training and if the dog wanted to work more I'd find a club.

Love your video. Very much agree with owning a Doberman. I have vet insurance it is a must for me to feel I’m doing the right thing for the conditions you spoke of. Also I do believe the breed from when I first owned and breed was years ago. So it is to 😅be known. Yes the breed unfortunately comes with a lot of issues. I absolutely love Dobermans. I have my Doberman on a special diet. And I would do that with all dogs that I owe. But with certain breeds 100%. If you cannot afford a Doberman do not get one please. They do not do well going from a different home as so on. There are Velcro dogs. You will never ever go to the bathroom a lot. Also, they have lots of energy. Also, there is a very difference in training and behavior with your opinion versus American Doberman. This is just from experience. Backed up with education. You can look it up. Thank you for the information on the Belgium. I think they are amazing dogs and they definitely hold up to protection and law-enforcement, etc..

I lost 2 dobies to dcm. It broke my heart. My second one went fast and I put him down for that reason. When I got him I spoke to our vet wanting xrays of the heart to know ahead of time. I wish I knew that there were cardiologist for him, I would have easily spent the money. I couldn’t get another dobie again because of the horrible disease. I LOVE dobies, but no. It hurts so much to lose a dog before 5. I have a standard poodle now. Mainly because their health tends to be really good. I really need a dog to last a minimum of 10 years. I love your dogs. By the way, my first dobie lived for 9.5 years. (Second didn’t make his 3rd birthday and 3rd just shy of 5th.) the 9.5 dog had bloat.😒. The statistics went from hardly mentioned (dcm) 15 years ago when I got my first to 60% when I lost my last one. DCM has to be caused by the breeding. It needs careful attention to get breed out of the line or it will keep going up. I pray it won’t happen to you. I so love your dogs. By the way, all of mine were European. My second one was also from Serbia.

I've had both breeds. I have chosen the Malinois over the Doberman because of the durability of the Malinois verses the Doberman. Both breeds are amazingly intelligent and eager to learn. My personal opinion is the Malinois is kinda like the Doberman on steroids in many ways but healthier and better suited for ŕugged work in rough climates verses the Doberman.
However, the Malinois is not very well suited for the "inactive oe lazy " type of people. They require both physical and mental stimulation. At least an hour per day minimum. If they don't get it, it can leed to problems and bad behavior.

I heard that the AKC in the FCI standard of the Dobermen are the same in terms of weight and height, but the FCI Dobermen has more drive, of course, and my male Dobermen, who is a European is 73 pounds which back in the day Dobermen’s were a lot smaller around that spectrum not 90 to 100 pound range for males

We lost our 11 year old dobbie last year and we're about to get Malinoi from Serbia soon. I'm from Serbia so that's our connection to it and I was wondering how come you got yours from Serbia and how come you got it at only 4 months as we live in the UK and we need to wait 3 months post RAT test to get it?
My friend is a malinoi breeder so I'm confident about what we're getting and his basic training.
Good video, defo will check your other videos.

It´s healthy for dogs to be with their mother till 3 months.... BUT:
We got our first Doberman about 3 months ago. Normally I got my dogs at the age of 8 weeks, this time we waited till 3 months. Our breeder was the best I ever had. They got us updated like every day in the beginning and after the puppies grow up a little at least every couple of days. It felt like being with them from the very first day.
It was good for his mental development to be with his mum for so long but we got some "problems". He was on his own free will for a long time and getting rid of bad behavior was a little more difficult. Also, the bonding is going on much slower, especially because of the fact that he and one of his sisters were the last ones. They got much more contact with the breeder and started to bond with them.
After being with our Doberman for 3 months I can't imagine getting any other dog. This breed is so dedicated to its owner. I can cuddle him properly and he loves it. I love to work with him and he is into everything as long as he can be with us. But I wouldn't wait till he is 3 months next time. Maybe till week 10. Staying longer with his mum really did something for him.
I'm from Germany and in my country it's strictly forbidden to cut off the ears and tail. Here is a friendly reminder that the tail and ears only were cut off, so this breed looks more dangerous.

Really appreciate to bring up the health issues in Dobie, should be a huge concern considering there wellbeing and short longietivity, DCM and other genetic disorder should be screen early and only disease free dobies should be breeed to get good disease free progeny, will be a boon ton lots of Dobie petparents thanks 😊

There is a good breeder here in New Zealand ( Martyn Dobermans) and they scource cemen from the US and really care about their dogs and puppies. If u consider just a note. Males are usually more chill, but they strongly bond to 1 person, the rest of the family will be the pack. Females tend to be more tencious, but can bond with the entire family on the same level

I would love to know about training requirements with a Malinois. Like how many hours per day do they need to be trained? I’ve seen others say that you need to train them or have them with you all day or don’t get one. Is that true?

Thank you! Didn't know about Doberman DCM. Have you ever watched the channel, "Beckman's Dog Training"? He has an amazing Doberman named Prince, who he uses to help correct "difficult" dogs, as only another dog can. He's had a couple episodes where the "difficult dog" is a Belgian Malinois. Fascinating, what happens mostly, is that rather than "correcting" the Malinois, Prince and the Malinois establish a mutual respect, accommodating the Malinois drive, instead of the "dominance" and "correction" that Beckman was hoping for. I love Beckman's stuff; he takes on difficult dogs and lets us see the whole process, including false starts and adjustments he has to make for the situation. Fascinating to watch.
