Wow. That´s what Sensei Rhee was telling is, whatever you do in life, if you wanted it so do it. Mabye a doctor, a scientist... what ever you like... I´m starting after 27 yrs off training again. And I like the movie "Best of the best", because that´s the reason what training I started then.... God bless him... And now I´m starting it all over again.... Master Rhee thank you....

@SpinDoctor91 Yeah I loved Philip in the Best of the Best series. What I love here is he actually acknowledges that TKD has advantages and disadvantages, just like any other single martial art. I hate when people from any fighting art or method try to pump their chest up as if their art is perfect or the best. If martial arts are made by humans, who are imperfect, then how can the art itself be perfect? It of course can be excellent at what it does best, but such pride is counter-productive.

I've done tkd for years and transitioned into kickboxing and now jiu jitsu a year ago. We don't see tkd implemented much in mma because there's a lot of flashy kicks (wheel kicks or spinning back kicks) which could open you up for take downs. But tkd taught me to have quick reflexes, to be explosive(hip escapes), and flexibility. Every martial arts contributes to different combat situations you may be in or adds on an advantage when learning a new martial art. My tkd days weren't a waste of time

I have practiced TKD for just under 3 years...I'v learned that it teaches you not how to fight, but also how to avoid a fight. I agree with Rhee when he says that martial artists are losing respect for the sport and forgetting where it came from. I recommend Tkd to anyone who wants to learn how to defend themselves!!

This is a great interview. I am a Pe teacher who also teaches TKDo and studied judo in college. I agree that the tournament scene is a circus and that tradition in everything in this wonderful country is being lost to the dollar. This is seen in public school and the dojang! Values are being dunbed down to make kids successful without instilling the work ethic that built this country. It starts at home parents should not expect everyone else to do the hard work of leading by example:)

There's a person who smashes rocks really well and there's a person who can make a life-like sculpture out of a rock. Neither might be able to do what the other does as well, neither should denigrate the other.

What he's talking about--the limitations of Taekwondo--were what my own school in the '90's took into account. Since leaving, every other school I've seen has been overly focused on tournaments and point sparring and on absurd kicking techniques. The art part of martial art is often lost or minimized by them.

I really like his style and his movies.
I am in fact considering training in a similar combination of MAs, except that instead of Hapkido i'll probably take Judo. (there is only one Hapkido-dojang in my vicinity and somehow i don't like the training there) Also Judo has the advantage of having ground-fighting in it (in case somebody tries to tackle you down).
Back on Topic: Great interview, it's good to see a really great MA-Teacher who takes the way of nonviolence seriously!

Only the boneheaded martial artists put down another martial arts. Their mentality is this is better than that, etc, etc. It's not about which one is better but about what martial arts will impact your life the most. I was a kyokushin and BJJ student, but I have a lot of respect with any martial arts esp. the beauty of TKD. I love their amazing kicks and how I wish I've learned TKD in my younger days.
Phillip Rhee is such an amazing actor and martial artist, I'm sure a great TKD instructor as well. I'm just wondering why he didn't get much attention from Hollywood as he's got all the stuff that a successful actor can have (except being Asian, as I believe they don't like Asian lead action star during the 90s)

Avean what you said has great truth and I also agree with Phillip as well. I do see that among the martial arts world there is alot of disrespect. Alot of them have even adopted a gang mentality. And MMA is as you forementioned, is really not making it any better. They really don't fight out of respect, they fight out of malice and to beat the crap out of other people. Thats also not the purpose. Mutual exchange and perfection of knowledge is the purpose of martial arts...all styles.

@TheG1NGAN1NJA I started doing taekwondo at age 8 or 9. I just wanted to do some kind of martial art and I did it because a lot of other people I knew did one so I wanted to learn one too. My school taught/teaches Tae Kwon Do, gets it's grappling from Hapkido, and Kumdo. Taekwondo is a good base art or standalone art. It's an excellent art as a base from which you can go and learn other arts like kungfu, boxing, wrestling bjj, judo jujutsu, kendo, or muay thai or lots of other martial arts.
