I started with Tech no code (1996?). a few years ago, i got bored and wants to get my general. i am cheap, so i decided to take extra test too. i did the easy way (for me). i downloaded question pools online. i memorized 400 questions for general and 700 questions for extra in two weeks. i developed some strategies by studying the questions and choices. i passed.
I studied for my tests and took my Technician test on 06/11/2022, then picked up my General class on 06/18/2022. I memorized the questions and passed each test on my first attempt. I also used the mentioned online prep sites.
I bought a book, "The Easy Way", and spent 15.00 for "Ham Radio School". It's the only way. Advanced operators can't dumb it down to my imbecilic level.
Thanks for the info. I just got my technician license yesterday and it would be so cool to get my General & Extra before I forget it all and the questions change.
Thanks, Dr. Beth, I enjoyed your video a little over a month ago. And took your advise with the books and methods you suggested. At 72 I was not sure I could pack all that stuff into my head, but there was an Amateur Extra exam about a month out and I registered for it. I studied at least 2-3 hrs per day, mostly in the morning, and then might review the particular section later in the day. I had 28 days before the test and did not study for 3 out of those 28 days. I did intensify with longer hours about 3 days before the exam. I more less remembered the correct answers to the math parts. ANYWAY,.. it all paid off and exam day I simply whistled through with 47 out 50 correct. Not bragging, but want to say it to encourage others to go for it. In summation, it feels great to be an Amateur Extra and what seemed impossible at first became probable and then likely. GL all, TU Doc and 72, KK7HI
I'm reading Craig Buck technician right now. I'm glad to hear you passed. Much of the info I have found is far too complex for someone with my weak electronics background.
Thank you for your advice! I ordered the book that you suggested. I passed the Technician exam two months ago, and this passed Saturday I passed the Extra exam. Hopefully tomorrow or the next day the FCC will post my license. I thank God for blessing me with the wisdom!
Wow... that was some serious speed on your progress there man! 👏 Never heard of someone getting it done that fast. Had to say good job because that's pretty impressive.
I used his book for the General and it was helpful. I had spent a couple of weeks doing testing for technician asd only spent a few days studying for the General test but the book was certainly what put me over the top because some of ways that he explains the answer made it easier to remember.. I did not realize that the deadline for the new test is coming so soon. I need to get crackin for my Extra because I have all of the current books. Also my wife had started on her technician test,, she needs to get busy too.
I am studying for my extra right now. I also used ham test online for my last two tests. It's really good. For my general I printed off all the answers and worked to memorize anything my brain wouldn't hold on to 😂😂 Good luck to anyone trying to get their licenses!
That's what I did to pass boards. I was a good student, but it helped me enough to be worthwhile. I look at all tests as barriers of entry to something I want, nothing more.
I took all three test in one test session and passed them all the first try. I believe the time limit was 3 hours. It was a standard test session at a ham fest.
Thanks for the encouragement. I passed the general yesterday although not with the spread I had anticipated. There is a volume of free resources available online and in apps to help. Electronics and physics and engineering are my weak points. So I am a bit nervous as I begin to study toward the Extra certification. Particularly when I download and print the question pool and it eats up my tone ink and a pack of paper.
wanted to do my license the A in Germany but unfortunately with almost 1000 questions then three more parts and more questions and to learn that as a worker no chance to do it, everything gets harder here and yes only a few feel like the hobby and stay to 11 M, yes of course the E license here has also become heavier since the introduction of the N for 2m and 70cm but even this is heavy! I don't think they want normal people in Germany to do the hobby because if you look at the call signs they are all technicians, engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc. only a few normal ones! there has to be another regulation like in Italy, the license is through! I'll do mine there because it's a lot easier and yes it's fun then!
Thanks Doctor. My concern is the Morris code. It all sounds gibberish to me, My ear is not routed in this concept. I do not want to connect in CW & I find CW as an alien language.
its been a few years, let me go back and review and maybe make an update. There are apps now that are awesome, I wanted to understand the material but also I did have to memorize some facts
Hello sir how do I use my baofeng radio to call other countries. Like using Allstars or echolink. Can I program my boafen to dothat without using a computer
What happends if u dont have liswnce to operate ham radios. I see and know alot of people who use them and dont have lisence. I meant a cop aint goint to pull you over for not having a lisence . So where is the lisence coming handy or where do u show it or where do they ask for it . Is it like a Droje that u need to have lisense to operate. Please help me out here. I meant it means comon sense not to mess around with illegal frequencies and stay away from them but what is the lisence for. Is it just edicate you on how to operate and what to do and not to do. But i think all is very straight foward
@@Drbethturtlewoman My point is like, what are people doing wrong with the radios , are they just messing around with people , bothering, cursing , or what or why would monitors will be tracking down people who dont have lisence if they are been respecful and using the radios wisely .
@@Drbethturtlewoman one last question and sry for been so ignorant and new at this. What is a call sing and how do u get one. Is that when u get ur lisence or when u sing up like online repeater.com and make a profile ?

This is just my opinion, it's a HUGE mistake to waste time trying to understand concepts. The goal is to pass the test. Learning, absorbing, understanding and eventually implementing material comes with experience. If you mess around trying to understand the whys and wherefores involving the sheer volume of material one has to study; it is a recipe for disaster.
Well said. I’ve tried twice to learn the deep tech details for Extra and it didn’t work either time. Three weeks ago I switched to a “learn the answers” approach, and am confident I’ll easily pass. Plus I’ll start there and move deeper into the areas that I want to learn more about. Oh, and in learning the answers I’m already much more technically ahead of where I was. Way far ahead.
Thats why Ham radio is turning into CB band .Ever since they got rid of the Code and made all 3 test so easy anyone can get a Ham license now 😜😜The hobby is dying 😢😢

I used the KB6NU "No nonsense" study guides.

Not "Licening," it's pronounced "Li-Cen-Sing" At @3:13
Thanks for producing and sharing this video, it was super helpful!
than you I appreciate your comment
Thanks for video. I will definitely not get Craig Buck book. No questions? No thanks.
Thanks for the information! 73!
Love Hamtestonline.
Great video!
OMG, a female version of all the other males into HAM
I take this as a compliment, LOL
Thanks Doctor. My concern is the Morris code. It all sounds gibberish to me, My ear is not routed in this concept. I do not want to connect in CW & I find CW as an alien language.
I have had my ticket since 1995. CW is my weakness.
Gee Bee CW is not a requirement for getting any one of the Amateur Licenses, anymore.
They removed the CW requirement..
Morse not morris
No need to learn code
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME
The key is to NOT be intimidated by it.
Are you saying "Lysening"? Also, the first book you say the book doesn't even list the question but only the question number? Are you sure about that?

I agree, I did try to understand some of the parts actually was interested in
The volume of information was daunting considering I was trying to take general and extra at the same time.

You're missing the s on licensing. Lol. It's cute anyway.
How did you know you got a 92%? I don’t think they ever tell you how many you get wrong.
I asked them. They will tell you.
I took mine online and was told automatically.
Buck's book is boring. There's better choices out there. Plenty of apps and websites.

passing a trst does NOT make you a Ham.
.Especially from a worthless book like that where youre memorizing answers .
Youre a Licensee, not a Ham.
I agree completely, I don't consider myself a ham but I would like to learn more, I have the radios but I need a mentor to help me
