Procol Harum must be one of the most underestimated rock bands of all times. Their dark elegance so intriguingly; their brain-inviting way to rock; their orchestral arrangements - without any great light show they simply played and sung their way to the top of my secret all time winner's podium - thank you, "boys" - you gave me so much more than most others...
Procol should have been in the rock hall in their first year of eligibility. They have so many classic albums. Their is no other group that sounds like them, the sign of a great band.
Even though I know it can make me cry, I love the minor key of this song because it adds so much drama to the story behind it. Gary Brooker's voice carries it along with so much emotion and power. The whole thing is majestic... if you close your eyes you are there on that ship, by moonlight, with the stormy, salty wind in your hair. The sound of seagulls at the end is a nice touch :) ... I knew some of Procal Harum's songs before, but until tonight, had never heard this one. I'm so happy to have discovered this epic song.
I saw the Band when Robin Trower was on Guitar. It was an Experience that i will never forget. Amazing from start to finish. Every time i hear Procol i am reminded of the Friend who took me that night. He is no longer with us. But Procols music will forever be. Thank You Brother Bill for taking me to this Fantastic Show. I'll never forget it, nor You.
Procol Harum was a band of real artists. They used the format of rock music, but much of their contribution to music and art transcends time. In their best composition, like this one, they show that they are masters of harmony, melody and structure. In the future, many of their melodies will be remembered and studied. They tell us about something universal and deep. Moreover, this band was elegant and always performed out of a desire to touch hearts and souls, and not just the body and the sensations.
I was fortunate enough to see these guys in the 70's as a young kid. Amazing band and to this day this song sounds fresh and inventive. Gary Brooker has one of the all time great recognizable Pop Music voices. The drummer, the late great B.J. Wilson was a standout at the concert Iattended. Beautiful song...great post ...and thanks! ~King Bear
i loved how his voice was British and soulful at the same time...I'll miss hearing it. and don't miss hearing his contributions to the tribute "Concert For George" show.
Dyann Espinosa ti capisco bene....io amo i Procol Harum e Gary Brooker 💘. Ciao!!!🙋🌹
I saw them in 74 and they were wonderful. A real band that could really play and Gary joked with the audience. Nowadays that would be nearly impossible. Thanks for posting this.
This is one of the best songs ever written. The dynamics go from extremely light and airy to crushing. The tension created by that slight dissonance is perfect. It leads the listener to suspect that there may be something a bit more sinister here than what appears on the surface.
Love your honesty, I use to get drunk at these beautful songs also, and cry for hours. I no longer drink, but still drop tears..............when l hear them again......
Gary Brooker is one of the greatest rock vocalists ever-was lucky enough to see Procol Harum at the Fillmore East in September, 1968-they blew me away-also performing that night were Country Joe and the Fish and Ten Years After-what an unforgettable night of music!!
As a drummer who's been been listening to pop all my life, this group, especially this song, always delights & fascinates me. It's one of the few songs I've ever heard which send shivers up and down my spine every time I hear it. I've told my wife that I want it played at my funeral. Met them i the 70's...Remarkable musicians, perfect gentlemen. Rest in peace B.J. Wilson. Your paradiddles live on. Amen
Sì, era la sigla finale di Avventura, quella iniziale era She came through the bathroom window Del grande Joe Cocker, remake del brano dei Beatles
Ciao coscritto🙋😺
Procol Harum is a band I didn't get into until a couple of years ago. I wish it hadn't taken so long. A mark of a great band is getting something new out of their music every time you go back. Definitely the case with these guys. I always hear some curious turn of phrase, ingenious guitar lick, or stunning drum line I missed before.
The older I get, the more this song means to me. This is PH's best work and their defining moment. Gary Brooker's vocal in this version is superlative. The emotion in his voice, as he delivers Keith Reid's unparalleled lyrics, is astounding. I defy anyone to listen without a tear coming to their eye.
Many people say they were underated but they have been around since the sixties & still stir the senses today. Something else, their no 1 "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is one of the best, if not THE best no1 of all time & is still played widely today.
Tonight they played near my hometown in the Netherlands, and it was a fine concert. All is there, the Voice, the Seagulls...They played this as the final song, it was so intense, that after it ended, no sound in the theatre was heard for seconds...you could hear a flea fart...that silent!
Then Gary Brooker stood up, and the applause came bursting out.
Those haunting piano chords and *that voice * combine to make one of the most emotionally affecting pop records ever made. I get spine chills and watery eyes from it every time, and very seldom does music do that to me.
I love this rendition he did with the Edmonton Symphony...Booker's voice coupled with that huge symphony sound combined to give you goose-bumps (at least it did me) Hard to find album/cd but I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Thanks for posting this one "cat"
I allways wondered why my mother got so misty eyed listening to Benie Goodman and the like from the 40's.She told me one day I would understand. Thanks Mom.

This was one of those definite songs from its time. Absolutely fantastic - still is and I would challenge anyone to say it isn't. Just brilliant and moves me to tears every time I hear it. Poignant and beautiful - a work of poetry.

Rest in peace, mighty Gary. Thanks for all your songs and your powerful, yet moving, voice.
Beauty never dies. RIP Gary
Procol Harum should be in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame for this and many songs. Petition and vote them in like other recent groups.
Where vote?

A simply amazing band. A favorite of mine for more than 40 years.

I saw them first in 67, then 68. This is my favorite song. So damn powerful. Led by the beautiful voice of Gary Brooker

Of ALL of the recorded music I have (and I have a lot), this song, and Booker's vocals, this is one of my favorites. Fantastic!
I love this song, never get tired of playing it!

The drummer was the God of the Drummers. He is playing in Heaven now.
R.I.P. B.J. Wilson
In addition to being a fantastic drummer, Barrie was one of the finest people that I have ever had the pleasure to have an acquaintance with.
He and Matthew Fisher played on Joe Cocker's first album, too.
Molto sottovalutato.....
Great rip
Gary Brooker is a genious. I loved his music when I was a teenager in the 70'ties, still do. Wish he could make more of those fantasic songs!
I saw them in 74 and they were wonderful. A real band that could really play and Gary joked with the audience. Nowadays that would be nearly impossible. Thanks for posting this.
Gary b said that the song wasn't intended for drums because they wouldn't work, BJ made them work brilliantly.
and it was bj wilson's funeral song.. RIP
This tune got called on a gig, I was like "wtf do I play here?"

I saw Procol Harum just this past weekend...Gary Brooker still sings this well in 2019!
Awesome performance. Gary is a master, got goosebumps hearing this. I dont see how the audience could remain seated at the end of this song
Great poetry, unearthly music. One of the best songs ever made.
Peace to this amazing, gigantic voice.

Have the album A Salty Dog on vinyl! In great condition 50 years after I bought it
Concordo pienamente.
Probably the most considered and sensitive interpretation of this song by PH I have ever heard. The mixing is sensational. Overall MAGNIFICENT!!

Marvelous song!
Salty Dog
All hands on deck, we've run afloat
I heard the Captain cry
Explore the ship, replace the cook
Let no one leave alive
Across the straits, around the horn
How far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course
And no one left alive
We sailed for parts unknown to man
Where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold
Could match our captain's eye
Upon the seventh seasick day
We made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue
No mortal place at all
[Instrumental part]
We fired the guns, and burned the mast
And rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept
Our tears were tears of joy!
Now many moons and many Junes
Have passed since we made land
A Salty Dog, the seaman's log
Your witness, my own hand.
