To OG Tool fans, these older funky beats and more aggressive lyrics are classic Tool, while we love their evolution into the newer albums, these earlier songs hold a special place in our hearts.
"You wouldn't think this was Tool". That's what happen's when you put the windows in before your pour the slab. Building blocks buddy. This is early Tool, as Tool as it gets.
Right , when Omar says , I wouldn't think this was tool.that's how I felt when lateralus came out , cause I'd been listening and grew to know and love the first 2 albums
Lol this is TOOL personified. Raw early days but unmistakable remains, that TOOL sound. If you started off with the older stuff and saw how they evolved, progressed naturally and when certain songs foreshadowed their future. Go back, listen IN ORDER on your own time - Opiate EP, Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, 10, 000 Days. This song is dark as hell.
I like this (raw) tool as much as the recent. And the biggest difference in the old and new is that the old uses more of a funky guitar and the recent uses more bingo sounds and a lot of acoustic/bass
Man, Undertow is such a great album, even in comparison to the rest of the Tool catalogue. Just a different, dirtier vibe from it, which I love. And yet another example that, even when Tool dips into different themes while evolving, they just nail whatever vibe they want to create. God tier music. Other music suggestions: Cynic (metal/jazz fusion) - Space for This A Perfect Circle (prog. rock) - The Doomed Deftones (nu-metal) - You've Seen the Butcher Nine Inch Nails (industrial) - Somewhat Damaged Neurosis (sludge metal)- Locust Star DALEK (rap/post metal) - Eyes to Form Shadows Between the Buried and Me (prog. metal) - The Coma Machine Chelsea Wolfe (she's a metal artist) - 16Psyche Massive Attack (trip hop) - Risingson
@@ryansenior091 No. I saw them in 98 and he was totally a frontman... The reason he stays back is because of the incredible awesomeness that is Tool. He doesn't he doesn't want the audience completely focused on him and not the rest of the band and their amazing stage show. He was sexually abused but you'd be surprised how many ppl you know or talk to that have been molested or raped. It's actually common but most keep it to themselves or go to a shrink. The cycle of abuse is real and sick!!! I don't think that most of these people really rape or molest others. I don't think Maynard has sodomized anyone without permission. I think this was his outlet to help get over it.. Imo
I'm not saying he became an abuser I realized half way through he swapped to the abusers point of view and that's why he was abusing was because the abuser had been abused...but anyway I appreciate the well written response and breaking my ignorance of his stage positioning.
@@ryansenior091 Awwww Ryan i didn't mean it like that. I have just heard him talk that's all. I come from a family with a lot of abuse so that's my take on it. My uncle severely molested my cousin and i have obviously known her my entire life. I told her about him trying to moleste me as a young child and she still didn't tell me...but i could tell she wanted to tell something so i asked. She goes to a therapist. My mom thinks her oldest kid is my uncle's. Pretty fucked up family huh?
To appreciate Tool’s earlier work, one needs to take into account the other music of that period. Rock was in the transition between hair metal and grunge/alternative. Maynard never intended to be in a band. But, after enough complaining about the lack of any quality rock bands in the scene, friends pushed him to come up with something better. Gradually Tool was assembled and had a contract after playing only 7 shows. Maynard has discussed how, at the time, he had a lot of pent up frustration and anger that he needed to get out. And it got to a point where “you either become a serial killer or start a rock band”. Hence the raw and angrier vibe of Opiate and Undertow. As you mentioned Omar, it’s beautifully astounding how well they’ve aged and evolved while holding onto their core elements and remaining unmistakably Tool. Very few bands that started in the same era are still around today. They rejected the cookie-cutter trendy sound of the moment and leaned towards creating music that would be timeless.
Like I've said before. Undertow is amazing, but you can't skip the Opiate EP. Like you said, tracing them backwards is a great journey, so you must complete the journey.
I always interpreted it as the lyrics of "Hands bound and my head down and my eyes closed" as either rape or someone praying, and i have to agree with poncho larpez as forced religion, from one genration of beliefs to the next
please react to PUSHIT SALIVAL version..seems that you only reacted to PUSHIT AENIMA version..bring your GF along and enjoy it and itll be quite a ride..
I mean, if you know for certain. By fictional I mean Maynard isn't literally a rapist going full circle. If not fictional, the story is metaphorical for something else in his life.
Excellent points. Though I do think it's acknowledging the cycle having been done to him, even though in the song does go full circle, he chooses not to, but definitely an example of those that do, or metaphorical to mean it does to him and what it does for others.
The song is about religious indoctrination, using the metaphor of rape. My lamb and martyr. Do unto others. Hands bound. Head down. Eyes closed. Mouth wide open. Hands clasped. Head down. Eyes closed. Praying. I cant stand to burn too long. In hell.

Dude, well fucking said. Undertow is like my favorite album. So raw and explicit
You mean a OGT? 😊See what I did there
You said it all.
For sure. Opiate is still my favorite tool song after almost 20 years as a Tool fan.
Absolutely agree. I grew up on Undertow.
This album may not be as technically complex as their later stuff but its still fucking fantastic.
"You wouldn't think this was Tool". That's what happen's when you put the windows in before your pour the slab. Building blocks buddy. This is early Tool, as Tool as it gets.
/\This guy gets it.
Right , when Omar says , I wouldn't think this was tool.that's how I felt when lateralus came out , cause I'd been listening and grew to know and love the first 2 albums
I agree.. Start at the beginning and hear the evolution of Tool
Put perfectly lol
Never thought of this song as "groovy". More like sad as fuck.

Flood is the song on this album that was a harbinger of things to come. Also Tool also has an ep called Opiate before Undertow.
I agree. And for long time flood was my favorite.
If you had seem them live on their tour for this album, you would understand the energy and connection to the whole discography. You will get there.
A year after you were born?!?! Damn. Time flies people! This album is decidedly darker than their more recent stuff.... but this is the good good.
Opiate is there first album bro
"Wouldn't think it was Tool" ? Yeah man, I would.
It's a shame to hear newer stuff before this.
Man, Undertow is such a great album, even in comparison to the rest of the Tool catalogue. Just a different, dirtier vibe from it, which I love. And yet another example that, even when Tool dips into different themes while evolving, they just nail whatever vibe they want to create. God tier music.
Other music suggestions:
Cynic (metal/jazz fusion) - Space for This
A Perfect Circle (prog. rock) - The Doomed
Deftones (nu-metal) - You've Seen the Butcher
Nine Inch Nails (industrial) - Somewhat Damaged
Neurosis (sludge metal)- Locust Star
DALEK (rap/post metal) - Eyes to Form Shadows
Between the Buried and Me (prog. metal) - The Coma Machine
Chelsea Wolfe (she's a metal artist) - 16Psyche
Massive Attack (trip hop) - Risingson
Actually, I think I'm with Yo Mo for Somewhat Damaged as your starting track for NIN.
He should check out APC's new album. Good song suggestion man.
I have the album cover tattooed on my calf , wAnted on the lowest part of my body , thought about getting it under my toe ...
@@skmballer The Doomed might be my favorite song of this year.
But the record is great overall, imo.
Yes! You would think this is Tool.....if you had any idea about Tool. This is one of their biggest songs. It sounds EXACTLY like Tool. WTF!?!?
Love early Tool, gives me the feels xx
EP Opiate was before Undertow.
It's the cycle of abuse.. Idk if Maynard was actually abused. Wait until you listen to 4°..another favorite! Lol.
Great reaction
Yea from what I hear it did happen that's why when he performs it live you wont see him.

Jon-Paul Schulte ...nah
This week on Law and Order SVU: This song.
Each album the cared less and less what people thought and did what they wanted!
The best part of success is getting to do what you want.
thats my birthday too.
This song made me a Tool fan. Don't skip Opiate!!!!!
You should do opiate too
same for me !
FYI, this song is about getting pedicures/manicures
Wrong. Before Undertow, there was Opiate. So we are not done. Also, A Perfect Circle. 🤘👽🤘
Like I've said before. Undertow is amazing, but you can't skip the Opiate EP. Like you said, tracing them backwards is a great journey, so you must complete the journey.
What the fuck you mean? 🛶
I always thought it was about forced religion on you as a kid
poncho larpez yeah there’s different ways to interpret the song
I always interpreted it as the lyrics of "Hands bound and my head down and my eyes closed" as either rape or someone praying, and i have to agree with poncho larpez as forced religion, from one genration of beliefs to the next
I never thought of it that way but i can see why you did
It will be a glorious day when these reaction channels run out of Tool and SOAD songs to react to.
Don't worry, suicideboys are releasing a new album tomorrow. it's all good.
4 minutes in the video and still not going to the main reason why im here
After his mother had her stroke, he was left to his step father , who did this to him
Wait til new album comes out
Some say This is real tool .... btw don't skip the EP Opiate because its even simpler yet good .
you STILL MISSED OPIATE YOU TOOL!
Sorry, but you still got some tracks off Opiate to check out, lol.
Great song, you need to watch the video.
Another good video dude. I say again "somewhat damaged" nine inch nails

You got the pic in the corner right this time!
Lol why wont you do there eps and there live album
Tool-bottom
Some of Maynard's best. As far as i know, the lyrics are a fictional story peering into very dark subject matter and not about MJK himself.

Listen to "Push it" Static-X!
Brother , could you please react to pushit live? (salival version) you have done pushit , but not this version . it's like a whole new song !
Omarrrrr. Slap deliverence by opeth quick quick quick.. don't waste time
This song is about ritual sodomy. It’s extremely dark and debased. He has evolved in his music. I hope he has in life as well.
The song is about religious indoctrination, using the metaphor of rape.
My lamb and martyr. Do unto others.
Hands bound. Head down. Eyes closed. Mouth wide open.
Hands clasped. Head down. Eyes closed. Praying.
